National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill issued a statement Sunday afternoon slamming President Obama, saying that he had broken his faith with women by agreeing to issue an executive order that prohibits federal funding for abortions.
"The National Organization for Women is incensed that President Barack Obama agreed today to issue an executive order designed to appease a handful of anti-choice Democrats who have held up health care reform in an effort to restrict women's access to abortion. Through this order, the president has announced he will lend the weight of his office and the entire executive branch to the anti-abortion measures included in the Senate bill, which the House is now prepared to pass.
"President Obama campaigned as a pro-choice president, but his actions today suggest that his commitment to reproductive health care is shaky at best. Contrary to language in the draft of the executive order and repeated assertions in the news, the Hyde Amendment is not settled law - it is an illegitimate tack-on to an annual must-pass appropriations bill. NOW has a longstanding objection to Hyde and, in fact, was looking forward to working with this president and Congress to bring an end to these restrictions. We see now that we have our work cut out for us far beyond what we ever anticipated. The message we have received today is that it is acceptable to negotiate health care on the backs of women, and we couldn't disagree more."

Please shut up NOW
Don't blame President Obama for this. He's trying to help all Americans with a new Health care plan. Republicans and a handful of scared Democrats are forcing him to make changes to his original plan. We have to settle for second best now. Unfortunately, the right wing nut jobs are trying to put women back into the 18th century.
A vistory for children and families ecervywhere!
I've been behind Obama, he took on more than he even knew, but, I cannot accept this one! When I was 20yrs old, i got pregnant, I had a baby girl, but, I had that choice. How dare him!
Abortion is murder. In the future it will be looked at the same way we look at slavery today. Terrible legacy to leave behind.
I have always been pro-choice. Even though I think that abortion is wrong, I feel the woman's right to choose is more important.
Having said that, I don't think that federal tax dollars should be used to fund a proceedure that is, for lack of a better name, an "elective proceedure." My insurance doesn't cover lasik surgery, but it does cover glasses. My insurance doesn't cover liposuction, but my doctor does help with nutrition and diet advice. It doesn't cover gym membership, but sneakers are cheap and the road has already been paid for.
Most proceedures have an alternative. If she chooses abortion, she can pay for it on her own. If she can't afford it, there are thousands of families trying to adopt in that area, even more nationwide.
The President hasn't taken away the right to choose. NOW needs to understand that.
ughh.
If it's not to save the life of the mother, it's an elective procedure. Elective procedures should not be paid for w/ Federal funds. Period.
Barack Obama is totally without conviction. He is willing to compromise on anything. He has no convictions.
NOW shut up! I am pro-choice and I believe that federal funds should not be used for abortion. A "Majority" of abortion cases women are making those choices not the government. Plan Parenthood is outside the government and a woman choice should be between herself, her doctor, her god and advocate that is outside the governement. If the government start tracking these abortion through healthcare agency if you think iti is potical now but what do you think the atmosphere will be like when the Repugs get hold of that information. Think before you start whining to the President. I have never seen a Preisdent with such high demands on in my life time. Suck it up and drive, besides you do not speak for all woman and I BELIEVE a woman has a RIGHT to choose.
blah blah blah.
Being a women i do see why this is a major blow. But given the bigger picture I'd say we should welcome this. Every thing has its time and place...
Who really cares what this organization or any other organization that has their feelings hurt. This piece of historical legislation will benefit the greater good not just any single organization. So please put a sock in it and grow up.
Tough! Women have a choice about giving their child life or taking it away as a result of a monstrous ruling by the SC. But since they do not want pro-life people 'shoving' their beliefs down the throats of pro-abortionists, we on the pro-life side do not want our tax dollars spent for the murder of unborn children.
It is all about you, right, Ms. O'Neill?
Not about hard-working people without heaLth insurance. Kids without access to health care.
It's all about you and your pack of selfish cohorts whose time has passed.
If you don't like it, go over to the GOP. We do not need you. Go back to your very special and narrow-interest group.
Represent the lesbians of the nation and leave the rest of us alone.
