National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill issued a statement Sunday afternoon slamming President Obama, saying that he had broken his faith with women by agreeing to issue an executive order that prohibits federal funding for abortions.
"The National Organization for Women is incensed that President Barack Obama agreed today to issue an executive order designed to appease a handful of anti-choice Democrats who have held up health care reform in an effort to restrict women's access to abortion. Through this order, the president has announced he will lend the weight of his office and the entire executive branch to the anti-abortion measures included in the Senate bill, which the House is now prepared to pass.
"President Obama campaigned as a pro-choice president, but his actions today suggest that his commitment to reproductive health care is shaky at best. Contrary to language in the draft of the executive order and repeated assertions in the news, the Hyde Amendment is not settled law - it is an illegitimate tack-on to an annual must-pass appropriations bill. NOW has a longstanding objection to Hyde and, in fact, was looking forward to working with this president and Congress to bring an end to these restrictions. We see now that we have our work cut out for us far beyond what we ever anticipated. The message we have received today is that it is acceptable to negotiate health care on the backs of women, and we couldn't disagree more."

It's not a matter of choice or pro-life. Funding abortions in this health care reform would fund irresponsible sexual behavior at the expense of tax payers.
NOW is as irrational as the Republicans... and it's not a flat-out question of abortion being murder. I used to support NOW financially and personally but gave up on them and their radicalism about 6 years ago. They need to quit being so self-righeous and hypocritical and realize that there is a greater good. Live to fight another day NOW and pick your battles. This isn't one to fight.
N.O.W. has ruined life for many want to be" stay at home" moms. I don't have a "choice" to stay home and I don't get paid the same as my male counter part! They've also ruined the "family unit" for many children. I'm a 40 yr old mother of 2 girls and I see nothing good that has come out of N.O.W. except a bunch a bitchy women that give normal women a bad name!
Viagra and assistance to breed such as IVF are covered but abortions that save women lives are not? How pathetic! Women will always be treated like the walking incubators in this country.
Way to go Pres Obama. Now maybe the naysayers will shutup.
Nothing changes. So did you expect a health care bill that opened the door for federally-funded abortions? No, you didn't, so stop showboating.
"I'm sure pregnancy by rape and incest are covered"...I'm not going to hold my breath on that one. There are many out there who don't think that you should abort even if you were impregnated by a rapist or a family member.
"If you don't want a baby, don't get pregnant"...there are other reasons to have an abortion, such as finding out that the baby has a terminal or grave condition and its quality of life will be nil or it will die at birth.
Tha being said, I do agree that it's more important to get a structure up and then work on the imperfections.
Freedom OF religion doesn't mean freedom FROM religion. A rep, democrat or no has a constitutional right to vote with his spiritual convictions. And separation of church and state was meant to keep the state from dictating to the church what they can or cannot preach. Similar to how communist countries outlaw religion.
This just shows that Obama, Reid and Pelosi will run over anyone to get their evil plan done...even those in their own party like the Stupak gang or NOW. Dont you Dems get it...anyone can be betrayed for their plans. You in the NOW/NARAL org's...remember that a liar will lie to anyone...incl you. You have been betrayed & used by your 'own' famlly.
Abortion is not being prevented. All the President is saying is this bill has to comply with current law which prohibits the use of public funds for abortion, except for rape, incest, or when a mother's life is in danger. You can still use your personal funds to buy abortion coverage. I am an independent and a small business owner, and I support this bill and the restriction on public funding for abortion.
If people feel strongly against an issue, they shouldn't have to be forced to pay for it.
Republicans are cheering loudly for NOW. This is precisely what the Republicans want. Divide, divide, divide. In the REAL world if the Dems don't pass this Health Care bill the Republicans will take back the power that they enjoyed under Bush and we will be headed right back to the Great Depression that they had us headed into the last time. They did the same thing with Clinton and that's how the Dems lost their majority last time. Republicans know that. Why don't the Dems? They're supposed to have the higher I.Q.s. Wake up NOW!!! We're on the same team. Don't blow it.
I agree with those that say abortion should not be used as birth control...CHOICE is to get pregnant or not...when pregnant..murderous means should be outlawed...I'm a pro choice /antiabortion voter saying ...thank you!
If I can get some health insurance, I would be able to afford a pregnancy with a hospital delivery, instead of a much more affordable abortion. I'd like to have a choice too.
Give me a break! How about convincing the irresponsible couple to use birth control. Whatever happened to an adult making adult decisions? Tell you constituents to grow up, this health care bill is about better insurance for all Americans and not just the people who want to have irresponsible sex. You know Terry, irresponsible sex can lead to pregnancy and AIDS, or some other horrifying disease, so maybe this will be a wake up call to a few of your irresponsible members.
