Intelligence suggests Iran may smuggle arms to Afghanistan

New U.S. military intelligence suggests Iran plans to smuggle new shipments of weapons into Afghanistan in the coming weeks as part of an increased effort to interfere with coalition operations, a senior U.S. Defense Department official said Friday.

The information came from an "Iranian source" whose tips on past shipments have been verified by the United States, the official said.

The official declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the information. He also declined to offer more details on the identity of the Iranian source. Intelligence gained by talking to people, sometimes referred to as "human intelligence," is always considered sensitive for fear of compromising sources.

"There are indications the Iranians have stepped it up," the official said.

But another U.S. official said Iran is only providing "limited supplies of weapons to the Taliban ... not enough to cause major problems for coalition forces."

The official also noted that Iran - a majority Shiite country - and the Sunni Taliban almost went to war with one another in the late 90s, so it's not really in their interest to be a major source of top-shelf arms to the Taliban.

I am shocked!!!! Iran wouldn't do such a thing. Iran's leaders wouldn't lie to the world aobut anthing! Supply arms to our enemies, you reckon! WOW, WHAT A SUPRISE!
If it took us this long to figure that out......
I guess we just don't want to believe that such nice people would help our enemies!

I bet Iran has nothing to do with the Taliban. This isounds to me like another "Weapons of Mass Distruction" Smoking Gun to get our troops on the ground in Iran. Hopefully we're not being duped into another war....

For at least 10 years the CIA shipped millions of weapons and explosives to the Taliban fighters based in Pakistan to 'supposedly' use against the Soviet Troops occupying Afghanistan. Why would Iran supply the Pakistan Taliban freedom fighters with weapons when the Pakistan Govt. appears to be doing that quite well already? There is ZERO lack of new weapons and explosives for the Taliban across the border to resupply with, and I seriously doubt if any of them came all the way from Iran.

I concur with @ Jeremy, this is yet another attempt to place blame on Iran for what the CIA has done for many, many years.

DAH!!! Why don't we just wait around and let this escalate into a major problem??? DAH, wake up America. I have loved ones over in Afghanistan...they volunteered to go to fight for our country! WAKE UP AMERICA!

  5. Some guy overseas

It's wonderful that facts are being found out. Yet, it is totally ridiculous to put it out on U.S. media. What most of the news organizations are doing to us (guys overseas) is hurting our efforts. I am shocked and disappointed in the American media's lack of mouth control. Its like thay have diarreah of the mouth and they can't shut up. I have many friends in the localle and are trying to do their jobs to get information. How in the world can they do their jobs if the media keeps telling the enemy what we are trying to do? I am more than tikcked off. I am mad as ...... . If Americans want us to win these wars tell the media to shut up about what we are doing (yes that's the intelligence world!)

Wasn't there something in the news not long ago about the Taliban going to training camps in Iran? and now this. Iran – a majority Shiite country – and the Sunni Taliban almost went to war with one another in the late 90s, so it's not really in their interest to be a major source of top-shelf arms to the Taliban . . . there may be agents called Intelligence there but I am not sure there is intelligence being used. So far there hasn't been too much intelligence being used in either Afgan or Iran or Iraq.

How many troops are there now in Afganistan and how many nations involved? what are they all doing? Why haven't they been able to iradicate the problem? What's the hold up? Maybe we should send them the sex line phone number the RNC uses and share it with the Taliban fighters. Of course they would all have to have a major credit card.

The supply weapons and IED making materials all while they continue to make the bomb to destroy Isreal. More sanctions, that seems to work well and gives the media something to show how tough Obama is....LOL
