Immigration protest set for Cubs-Diamondbacks game

The fierce debate over a new Arizona immigration law has spread to America's pastime as protesters plan to demonstrate against the city's baseball team on Thursday.

The protest will occur outside Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, where the Arizona Diamondbacks will start a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

"America's favorite pastime will be hit with a reality check," the protest's organizers wrote on a Facebook page set up to publicize their rally. "Bring signs and banners to the protest."

By early Thursday morning, the Facebook group had more than 800 members.

The new Arizona law requires police to check whether a person is in the United States legally if there is a reason to suspect he or she isn't.

Critics say the law could foster racial profiling.

Along with the protest at Wrigley Field, the group said it is planning a protest march for May 1.

Back to baseball. With so many Hispanic players and fans, and because baseball has become one of the most popular sports in Latin America, it is understandable that a boycott of Arizona is in order. And, I'm not even considering the families of they players and fans who may be impacted by random stops for "papers." If a state passed a law that led to random stops for African Americans by local police who demanded identification, I would assume that many African American organizations who object to having anything to do with states that support this kind of discrimination.

It is disturbing how people do not see the economic side to this issue. Illegals are draining our resources, especially in healthcare. The very people who condemn the Arizona bill seem to have a blind spot on their brains. Can people not see what is happening when we have so many people coming into this country, having children here, at taxpayer expense I might add, then taking jobs which are hurting us. Then we have the danger of terrorists coming over from Mexico, and we probably have thousands who have done so. Our country cannot sustain itself at the rate we are going.

If the U.S. immigration laws were like that of Mexicos, we wouldn't have a problem. Or would we?

AHHHH how quickly we forget that WE STOLE this country first. WE picked a fight with Mexico too and TOOK half of THEIR land 1846-1848 and made it OURS.

Then perhaps Mexicans (descended from mix of Native Indians and Spanish conquerors) should give land they STOLE from the Native Indians back to THEM. You can go back until the beginning of man setting foot in that part of the world. Why do you get to choose where it stops and ownership is established?

Why I agree something needs to be done about illegal immigration. I think some of you out there are forgetting that those of YOU who complain about illegals are more then likely using them to clean your house, mow your lawn and watch your kids....So if you want them to go back then get ready to take up your chores for once. I remember that movie a couple of years ago. "A day without a Meixcan" You might want to watch and get an idea on how things will go if that ever happened. But yes if their illegal then send them back...But before you do can I get my lawn cut first please=).

Hope protesters bring their green cards. It is a sad day in the USA when the illegal aliens have more rights than do the citizens of this great country. Our goverment does more to support those who don't belong here than it does to take care those that do. I will support Arizona in every way possible for one person and praise their law makers and call them Hero's.

The question of legal or illegal is separate from the 'papers please' aspect of the law. There is nothing to stop you or I from being required to produce OUR documentation in AZ. I certainly don't carry my passport with me when traveling in my own country, do you? Nor do I carry my birth certificate and one other form of ID with me. AND I WON'T, either. This is, after all, AMERICA.

So, if I'm stopped in Arizona, and don't have proof of MY citizenship or my legal-status, I can be deported to my nation of ethnic origin (Ireland). I am, after all, typical of the threat of the massive illegal Irish immigrant population in the US. However, I'm a citizen – how would I get back to the US, after I were deported.

Oh, that's right, I don't have a 'foreign accent' (any foreign accent will do), I'm over 6' tall. I'm white. I'm over 50 years old and my clothes are in pretty good shape. So I wouldn't (probably, but not guaranteed) be stopped in Arizona. But what if I were? Check out the movie – "Born in East L.A." It's a comedy, but quite possibly may become reality for some US citizen.

Hey, It's OK – I always wanted to see Ireland anyhow!

the problem is that the mexican government hasn't seem to be very vocal about having it's "land" returned so they don't care but the U.S. Government is getting tired of all the problems ILLEGALS are creating in AMERICA

It is true that Arizona and other border states are unfairly burdened with the cost of handling illegal immigrants in terms of enforcement, health care, education and so on. We have treated law enforcement, health care and education as local or state matters rather than federal matters. In this case, it's like New Orleans...the city got hit by a hurricane. We don't expect the people of New Orleans to recover on their own.

In this case, the federal government should provide financial support to border states. Just as the federal government pays for schools and some other costs that a local community incurs when a military base is built, it seems reasonable that the federal government should help border states financially to handle the burden of illegal immigrants.

Unfortunately, this new law doesn't help and makes the situation even worse. This will only add to the financial burdens for people in Arizona.

Unless it's changed most ILLEGALS don't even have a license to drive and I assume you do. So you shouldn't worry – unless you don't like following rules which every state has that you must carry a valid drivers license, if you carry it then you're covered and only people who are ILLEGAL will have a problem

People complain about the Arizona laws by saying it's Un-American or It's not the American way. You're right. The Amercian way use to be if you broke the law, you paid the price, regardless of race, color or creed. We don't do that anymore. We racial profile Latinos! If your Latino and illegally cross the border, we'll look the other way, If you're a foreginer who is white, balck or yellow and fly into a U.S. Airport, you must have passport/visa. No passport no entry. Politicians now want to appease the Latino voting bloc. That' s how low we've become . Be honest! Millions of Mexicans don't want to live in Mexico, yet these millions want to turn the U.S. into Mexico. Why are Amercians called "racists" when they don't want America to become like Mexico? It's OK to down Americans, but when Mexicans are critized, it's racial. For decades people with green cards are required by law to carry them at all times. This is apparently not racist since most green card holders are not Latino. Now because it might have an affect on Latinos, it's racist. If you can't speak English, it makes sense to check immigration status.

There is now a world movement from various countries, as a result of reciprocity, mutual and equal principle from the new Arizona law, which in fact will put in to law, where all AMERICANS when traveling abroad must carry their visas, passports and immigration documents with them at all times while visiting their country. Thus, any police officer in that foreign country, no matter whether he/she is legitimate, CORRUPT or UNTRAINED, will have the right to demand the American to present their documents. If in fact that police officer deems the American is in the country illegally, even if he or she is or is not illegal, that AMERICAN will be ARRESTED and spend time in a FOREIGN jail until the proper national immigration authorities can resolve the matter. Given that most countries are not as efficient as others, most AMERICANS that would be sent to the local jail may spend quite some time imprisoned, even if they are in the country legitimately. Furthermore, any corrupt police officer would be tempted and enticed to harass AMERICANS traveling abroad, as the officers and their co-workers would be looking for bribes. Also, please keep in mind the danger of theft or loss of your legal documents as they would need to be with you at ALL TIMES. Thus, this is a very stupid law.

I live in Texas and we are over run by illegals. My neighborhood has been taken over by them. Crime is at an all time high and my property taxes rise every year because of the burden put on the county hospitals and public schools. All most every trade has been taken over by Mexican illegals so it very difficult to find a job if your not a white collar worker. I say send them all back to Mexico if they are in the country illegally.
