Political fallout for Obama amid oil spill disaster?

As the oil slick from the recent offshore oil rig disaster makes its way to Gulf Coast shores - expected to devastate the precious ecosystem and hurt struggling businesses - the seeds of political fallout for the Obama administration are beginning to sprout.

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh said on his program that the oil slick disaster is "Obama's Katrina."

Not so, says Media Matters for America:

"Media conservatives have rushed to absurdly compare the Obama administration's response to a catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to the Bush Administration's botched response after Hurricane Katrina, a hurricane that left more than 1,500 dead," the liberal-leaning group said on its website. "This claim is undermined by a number of facts."

Another Obama critic, Joe Weisenthal of BusinessInsider.com, wrote Thursday, "Today the story got elevated to national emergency level, but the explosion on the rig happened eight days ago!"

White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod told ABC news Friday: "This is always the case in Washington - that whenever something like this happens, the political speculation sets in."

"The truth of the matter is we had the Coast Guard on the scene almost immediately after this accident. The deputy secretary of the interior was on the ground the next day, and we've been coordinating closely with the local authorities and [BP officials] from the very beginning."

Axelrod said that no additional offshore oil drilling has been authorized and "none will until we find out what happened here and whether there was something unique and preventable here."

It’s looking to be the worst US ecological disaster – Blame should first be with the lobbyists who were able to pay their way to allow the United States to waive the need of shut-off valves for these oil rigs. Some countries, like Brazil, did not bow to oil industry pressures and require stricter safety measures. They used their brain and not their pocketbook. Next, we need to look at the US government officials who allowed these lobbyists to have their way. These government officials should be ousted. How do the Republicans feel now that they wouldn’t act on a clean energy bill unless oil drilling was included? Could this be the reason why the clean energy bill that was to be brought to the floor of the Senate last Monday, 26th April was cancelled? And then Graham blamed it on something else. Amazing! Does it take a disaster of this magnitude to change the corrupt government ways? Time will tell, but I won't hold my breath. Humans are destroying the planet day by day. What will it take to learn?

Could it be that the proper steps were quietly taken by the feds? It' very far from being told days before that a catastrophe was going to take place and doing nothing, then denying that you were given the information. The federal government has zero experience in stopping ocean floor oil leaks, so what does Rush say that Pres. Obama should have done, more than stepping back to let the professionals do their job? As usual he has no idea what should have been done differently, with Rush it would be wrong whatever the Pres. did.

Why does the obama not just give the orders to drop a napon bomb over the oil slick area this will reduce the amount of oil going to the coast. The clean up would be less.
Lets give it a shot before its too late

I find it refreshing to hear Rush Limbaugh finally admit Bush did something wrong. As with all things Rush, what he means is really what is between the lines. As a former fan of his, I'd like to remind him of his own words that he ignores anymore. "Words have meaning". I wish he'd live by his own philosophy.

What is Obama doing down there? He needs to get his butt back to work in Washington. Leave cleaning oil spills to the experts. Noone needs him to grandstand and preside over it. If he wants to see what an oil covered bird looks like, send him one by fedex.

Where are the conspiracy theorists of 9-11 ilk? Isn't it possible that Obama staged all of this?

This is NOT Obama's Katrina or his 911 - How can you compare a natural disaster/ terrorist attack to a explosion caused by a company and their faults - that would be like saying the Bush should have ran to BP Texas City in 2005 because it was devastating, and I’m sure the Coast Guard was there day one helping with this clean up- and that is the federal agency that should be there in an oil spill – they are the ones with the know how to clean up. Its absurd to compare Katrina/911 to this - this is by no means on the same level as those - the company caused this problem, they need to be the ones to fix it. I believe the government has done exactly what they should be doing – this is NOT Obama's 911 or Katrina, please quit trying to find something negative to pin on him.

Republicans love oil. Big Oil backs republicans. Republicans and direclty Dick Cheaney prevented legislation years ago that would have prevented this from happening....why...cause government is too big.

This is the result of NOT REGULATING when GREED is the only thing anyone cares about.

First it was a FInancial Meltdown under Cheaney's administration and now an Oil disaster both of which he chose to ignore.

YET IT IS OBAMA...you guys need help. Serious help. I won't be voting for Obama I doubt in the next election but this kind of filth and hatred towards a man that has NOTHING do with the problem you have in your life is not normal!!!
