NYC's Times Square shut down over suspicious car

Several blocks around New York's Times Square were closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic Saturday night after a police officer saw smoke emanating from a box inside a parked car, according to authorities.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told CNN that the shutdown began after a foot patrol officer passed by a Nissan Pathfinder with Connecticut plates on 45th Street between and 7th and 8th Avenues. Browne said the officer noticed a box inside the car with smoke coming out.

Browne said officials at the scene were using a robot to search inside the car. The police department's public information office said the box and other items found in the search are not confirmed at this time to be a bomb.

The Marriott Marquee Hotel wasn't allowing anyone to enter or leave the hotel Saturday night, and at least one nearby restaurant, TGI Friday's, had closed to customers and was evacuating staff.

CNN is the worst news organization currently operating. This is a front page story on all of tomorrow morning's major newspapers, and it is the major headline on MSNBC and Fox right now. But on CNN, it is buried beneath a headline about the oil spill and the immigration bill – stories which are important but hardly "breaking news" when compared with what could be a failed terrorist attack on NYC. Not only that, but the TV coverage is missing too. A Larry King rerun!

CNN, just give up. You're pathetic. You don't practice journalism. You rely on Twitter and Facebook for opinion and you can't even cover a major developing story in your own backyard. My favorite blog, Gothamist, has better coverage of this story than you, and yet they have a tiny fraction of the resources that are at your disposal. CNN, worse at covering major breaking stories than some freelance bloggers with their ears to the ground in New York. Shameful.

I called CNN asking why they weren't covering the story. The lady said "Well we have prerecorded shows on right now so we'll be covering the story tomorrow morning"

My bad...I thought you were a 24/7 NEWS NETWORK!!!!

I think it is good that CNN is not covering it. CNN is seen all over the world where as these other channels are not. Some times terrorist do things just to see how the response so they can figure out how to do it better when they do the real thing.

There has to be a reason CNN is not covering this and it is not even listed high on the website.

Stop trying to moderate me. I am ANGRY this is not being covered. Anger is righteous, and needs expression. Not stuffed like some people who offer a calm exterior when they're actuallt sh$$ing their pants.

Really? Tell me the last five suspected bomb incidents that didn't get front page coverage?

This is my hometown, and the busiest intersection in the world.

Not to jump to conclusions, but it scares me more that CNN isn't covering the story. Is there a reason for this? There almost has to be doesn't there?

Andi and July get over yourselves. There always has to be some sort of typo nazi on every single message board I swear. When everyone is complaining about a car bomb not being reported, these geniuses of English grace us with their divine presence. Do you two get off on analyzing life for typos? Here have a heart attack...

Your not cnn msg Boards. personal grammer and spell checksers. Cry. Me. A. RIVER.

CNN has to figure out how to spin it. It's only a "terrorist" if the suspect is a white male. If it's a Mexican Illegal, it's a "protest", and if it's Islamists, it's Bush's fault.
