Report: Hunter kills first hybrid polar-grizzly bear offspring

A hunter has killed a second generation polar-grizzly bear hybrid, the first second generation hybrid ever recorded in the wild, scientists in Canada are reporting.

An Inuvialuit hunter shot the animal on April 8 on sea ice near the Northwest Territories community of Ulukhaktok, according to a press release from the Northwest Territories Department of the Environment and Natural Resources.

The hunter, identified as David Kuptana, thought his kill looked unusual and submitted samples to the government for DNA testing, the news release said. Results of that testing released last week show the bear was the offspring of a polar-grizzly female and a male grizzly.

A male polar-grizzly was shot in the area in April 2006, the release said.

Global warming and the reduction of Arctic sea ice is likely to make such hybrid finds more common, scientists say.

"We're taking this continent-sized barrier to animal movement, and in a few generations, it's going to disappear, at least in summer months," Brendan Kelly, a marine biologist at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, told CNN affiliate CBC news.

The hunter, meanwhile, is looking to cash in on the animal’s pelt while it’s still rare and has received bids from across Canada, the CBC reported.

"Right now, we're already at $15,000, and we're going to see how far we can go," Kuptana told the CBC. "If we can do better, we'll be happy."

"All you hippies need to shut up. The dude is a native, they hunt for food. They still kill whales and polar bears. It's thier culture, as well as a means of survival. If he makes a buck for his family, good on 'em. There aren't many jobs in that part of the continent."

Ummmm....Nope your wrong. Natives in Canada survive by collecting welfare chqs from the Feds.
He was probably trying to shoot his "bradur" for sleeping with his sqaw, after passing out during a two day paint sniffing binge. Shot the bear by accident.

"Obviously we, as humans, are ruining habitat for a number of wild animals and they are adjusting as they can through no fault of their own."
Obviously nothing. You don't know enough about ecology or the climate to make a claim like that. Global warming, or at least blaming humans for it, is a farce. Things change, some species live, others die. Is it sad? Yeah, but it's a fact of life. If you really think global warming and people are the causes of so much change, try to get a weather forecast for more than 10 days; it won't happen, not a detailed one. And yet you think we can predict what the weather will be like in 10, 20, 100 years? Do you even think before you speak, or is a stream of babbling the best you can do?

This hunter should be a hero of the left. Let me explain:

    1) he locally sources his food supply (this case a mutant bear)
    2) he doesn't waste anything – selling the pelt, not throwing it away
    3) cut down on green house gases by not having his food shipped from far away

This guy is a role-model environmental crusader, saving the planet one locally-sourced kill at a time

see there are two kind of hunters one that use the deer and the ones that just kill to kill and make profit. I enjoy hunting i hunt all year long and if i dont eat it u can garntee some one else will. yes hunting is a spot in some ways but doesnt mean it goes to waste. hunters rule and if u dont like it then dont hunt. dont hate on the people who do it to live or just do because they like the way it taste one of the best meat is roasted deer.

this was clearly bred from a hybrid mother, thus being a new species

however since is has hybrid genes, that means that this "polar-grizzly" bear will most likely not have offspring on it's own, so this "species" will go out on it's own sooner or later anyway

hybrids are sterile most of the time but are virile every once and a while, which are very unusual.

What will it be next if the lust for money draw the human race to destroy one speices to cause a sitution where one can go to dinner just to say look at me and what i accuired at the price of one who loses there habit and is forced closer to the slaughterhouse of mans greed, God help the bears if BP gets control of there area. I hunt to eat not to gain a nickel or a status been people. There should be a law created World wide to stop sport hunting.

Hunters that claim they hunt to avoid an over-population are the biggest hypocrites of all. They hunt because they like to hunt. I know quite a few hunters, and they all admit that they like to hunt.

The biggest danger to the Earth is the overabundance of humans. One of these days, Mother Nature is going to perform her own population reduction.

David, you are wise! Correct, nature will take care of us in due course-animals that kill each other for pleasure (humans) will be extinct. The Law of Nature.

You either kill your own food or you pay someone else to kill it for you, maybe Ronald Mcdonald or Colonel Sanders.. What is the difference morally?
