Argentina's lower house of Congress approved a law early Wednesday that allows same-sex marriage, the government-run news agency reported.
The Chamber of Deputies passed the bill 126-109 with five abstentions, the Telam news agency said. The vote occurred at 2:45 a.m. after 12 hours of debate, Telam said.
The Argentinean Senate will have to pass the measure before it can become law. It's not clear when that vote will take place.

It is time we have equal rights. Love is love. Gays will not do marriage any better than straights, but equal rights is equal rights. Gays are not forcing any church and state to perform a gay marriage. Gays only want a family life and equal benefits. Please stop the hatred of Gays and Lesbians now. The world has not gone under since, Canada, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, South Africa and Spain have gotten gay marriage. Support equal rights now.
Argentina isn't a 3rd world country.
that is great news ! I wish the rest of the world can see how the thrird world countries are making progress with these kinds of social reforms . Equality is deserved for all
Anything outside the US is 3rd world country for ignorant-americans, only because there is not 2 or 3 (unnecessary) SUVs per household. There a reason why most of the americans who went to Argentina to study Spanish ended up staying there for good.
Argentina was among the first Latin American countries to allow their women to vote (1947). As far as civil rights, the ruling General Assembly in 1813 declared that children of slaves born in Argentinean soil are free citizens. Slavery was finally abolished in 1816!
Not bad for a country, considered 3rd world by some ignorant people.
I am wondering if folks like Selvia and Peter have recently been to Argentina or you just read the Department of State's report, that actually rates the country pretty well. The Argentine government is not doomed to failure, it is actually pretty strong, despite the constant desprestige campaign conducted by the media monopoly Clarin.
The past and current Kirchners' administration has actually found solutions to real problems: Argentina grew at 9% from 2003-8 and has had a sustained fiscal and commercial surplus since 2003, the poverty and unemployment plunged and a lot of effective social policies have been enacted to help the poorest. Not all of these appear in American media, only bad news and catastrophe.
The intent of the Argentine government is not to revive the Faulkland War but to lead a diplomatic action to recover those islands (whose real name is Islas Malvinas) that are on the Argentine continental platform and were inhabitted by Argentines before they were "occupied" by the Imperial UK.
Jimbo is absolutely right, most Americans that go to Argentina on tourism or study stay there or come back again.
I don't know what is more 3rd World that a country like the US that, till a few months ago, did not guarantee health care access to over 10% of its citizens, that is outreagous. Argentina has had FREE education and health care for ALL its citizens since the '40s. Don't be so quick to judge anything south of the border as 3rd World, just because it is different or you don't understanding.
Yesterday's vote is a victory of democracy, equality and freedom. And by the way, the bill was voted by representatives of ALL political parties, not just the ruling one (Frente Para La Victoria). Actually, some representatives from the ruling party did not support the bill and voted against it.
So be better informed before making derogatory statement against any country or administration. In the meantime, enjoy the right of spending your dollars in things you don't thing, which is the only real right that people have in the US.
I am sorry, I have to disagree. I love Argentine people and some of my best friends are from BA. I visit often. Howver, Argentina has a shocking history of inept and corrupt governments. It was, up to the 30s, one of the wealthier nations on Earth, but due to decades of horrid governing has slipped way down the list. I have nothing positive to say about Argentina's government.
Genna "our believes" – What kind of idiot are you, thinking "your believes" trump other people's civil rights?
Chris – you can believe in whatever fairy tales you like, but you have no right to deny other people their civil rights.
NY Vet – you seem to think a lot about Sodom and Gomorrah... What makes you think you have the right to force your disgusting and prurient beliefs on others?
I'm argentinian. We never drop an atomic bomb on anyone, we care about and don't discriminate our minoritys since 1816, our independence year, we put our dictators and genocides on trial and they are paying for their crimes on common jail, we struggle against the most violent and opressive economic policys dictated by USA and the IMF for the last 50 years trying to make our own decision dispite the most horrifying economic and ideologist imperialism... Who is a 3erd World country?
This is indeed very good news, go Argentina!
Since when being richer makes you more civilized and care more about human rights? The US is rich for invading countries, killing their people to steal their resources and exploiting and destroying economies from countries like Argentina...
To all Argentinian fellows. Do not listen to those whom shouldn't be listened. I am from Puerto Rico and by default an American citizen. Shall we listen to the ones that shatter the justice and freedom that ALL THE FATHERS OF THE AMERICAS dreamed of by listening to empty words? There's no first or third World, just ONE! Here in the USA we are people of love and thirsty for social and civil justice. Teach them who compare you to Sodom and Gomorrah that they are Pharisees and Scribes who forget that they are blind and still tell you what is the right path to take and tell you what is right when all they know is wrong!
It's sad to see that the world is upside down and to see clearly where it's heading. Just because Governments and people are heading for disaster and stepping on every moral issue, doesn't make any of these decisions legit or right. God is still in control and will judge the world, right and wrong, righteous and sinner sooner that anyone can imagine. I wonder how long will Sodom and Gomorrah suffer these issues because they were severely punished and God still has mercy and grace for all these countries and people that turn truth into a myth and moral into immoral, thinking that it'll all be OK. It all comes down to the BIBLE, "The Truth", the Word of God, if it's valid for all these people, because that Bible clearly states the truth: Read Romans 1:18-32 and find out what God says about these kinds of act. It all comes down to how sensitive and willing we are to understand these truths that will NEVER change.
