New York authorities have determined that a moving truck abandoned on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, formerly known as Triborough Bridge, did not pose a threat.
Police closed off the bridge for about two hours on both directions after being made aware of the incident shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The department's bomb squad was called to the scene after a toll booth operator who approached the U-Haul truck smelled a strong odor of gasoline, said Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne.
The truck, with Arizona license plates, was headed to Manhattan from the Bronx when the driver abandoned it about 1,000 feet from a toll booth - and ran off, witnesses told police.
The bridge earned its former name - Triborough - because it connects three of New York's five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.

Anyone who is familiar with the area knows that from the spot where the truck was, it's about another mile or so until you reach 1st avenue. So, if he had to abandon his vehicle, he'd almost have to run to avoid being in highway traffic...
probably someone who is fed up with the rude new-yorkers. why people even visit that city is beyond me. it is definitely the least friendliest city for tourists.

Were at war and we just had some lowlife try to set a bomb off. When a Uhaul truck stops close to a major bridge and the driver goes running, you can bet your life theyre going to shut the area down. Its called being safe. None of you on here probably live in NY anyway and its easy to call it overreacting from your barns in the Midwest

I wish this were happening back in the early sixties....we had no clue,,,and no reporters telling us the clues ...and we did not care...now every little thing either scares us or brings out all the sarcasm.
Not so much the car, but where is the driver? I'd be suspect too if someone stopped with a u haul ANYWHERE and ran away? Did he run to the toll booth? Did he warn anyone that the truck was ready to blow? Did he stand aside the car with a cell phone asking for help. Would like to hear more on this story.
I see some people becoming to lax I think it is smart to be on top of evey incident you never know when these murders will attack again live your normal life or they win but always keep your eyes open to protect you and your fellow man.
