Priest accused of having 'erotic dungeon' surrenders

[Updated 12:15 p.m. ET]  A Polish-born priest accused of sexually abusing minors in his parochial residence in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has turned himself in, state officials said Saturday.

State security officials said Marcin Michal Strachanowski, 44, surrendered to authorities Friday night in the village of Realengo.

State Civil Police had issued a "preventative arrest" warrant against Strachanowski on Thursday. The priest is accused of handcuffing a minor in 2006 and forcing him to perform sexual acts at his home in the Divino Espirito Santo church in Rio de Janeiro's west zone, the officials said.

In a press statement, the Rio de Janeiro archdiocese said it has suspended Strachanowski from his duties and that in addition to the criminal inquiry, the church has called on a ecclesiastic tribunal to oversee a canonical trial.

"The archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro laments the incident, especially for the people involved, especially for the possible victims, and clarifies that the mentioned clergyman already finds himself suspended of his parochial functions," the statement said.

According to Brazil's Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, the priest could not be found Friday morning.

The newspaper reported that a 16-year old alleged victim told investigators that after being frequently raped by the priest, he was forced to remain silent and was threatened regularly.

Citing court statements, the newspaper reported that criminal Judge Alexandre Abrahao Dias Teixeira said police investigations revealed the profile of a man with a "compulsive attraction to having sex with adolescents" and that he had allegedly turned his parish residence into an "erotic dungeon" where he forced boys to have sex with him.

@Tom–remember when everyone on earth thought the earth was flat? Thank goodness at least 1 person had a brain, and realized it wasn't. You're a blind sheep being led to slaughter.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE ATHEISTS. AND THAT APPEARS TO BE THE MAJORITY OF YOU HERE. THE ONLY REASON WHY THERE ARE FLAWS IN RELIGION 9AS YOU SEE IT) IS BECAUSE HUMANS ARE SCREWING IT UP. LOOK AROUND YOU. THERE IS NO WAY ANYTHING OR ANYONE EXCEPT AN ALMIGHTY WHO WE CALLED GOD OR ALLAH TO MUSLIMS COULD HAVE CREATED A UNIVERSE, HUMANS, ANIMALS ETC. ALL RELIGIONS HAVE A COMMON MESSAGE. ALL ACKNOWLEDGE A HIGHER AUTHORITY. YES THERE ARE DEVIATIONS AND SOME ARE MAJOR. BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THERE IS AN ALMIGHTY SUPREME ALL KNOWING BEING. AND GOD HELP YOU IF YOU DONT START REPENTING. WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE ? BETTER TO SEEK GOD AND BE WRONG THAN TO NOT SEEK HIM AND BE WRONG. BECAUSE THE PUNISHMENT IS GOING TO BE FAR MORE THAN YOU EVER IMAGINED. THINK ABOUT IT.

Rude to type in all caps... not only that, but it's rarely read. I suffered through it though... and "What have atheists got to lose?" Well, life as we know it. If money doesn't stop pouring into mythology and start pouring into scientific ways to save humankind, we will perish. And so will you.

So we are to believe the Earth existed before light on it did? We all know the light on Earth comes in large part from the Sun. By depicting an Earth without light, the Bible implies the Sun came after the Earth. Do you agree?

Otherwise, where does light on Earth come from and how could the Earth be without light for some time?

Also, are Christians the byproduct of incest dating back to Adam and Eve?

Why would there be a punishment, again? Does this god really expect to force us into certain beliefs through threats, that's not a god, that's a bully.

As for how the universe came to be, the answer of God did it, just pushes the problem back, for then we are left with the unknown of how that god came to be. The Universe = All there is. If there is a God he would be included in (a "subset" of) the definition of "The Universe", thus an answer to "Where the Universe Came From?" has to include an answer to where that God came from.

Atheists just say lets skip a step and admit we don't know, and instead of tossing out meaningless guesses, try to find out through investigating the universe itself.

Didn't read this post... all caps = major fail. Without exception, anything typed in all caps is universally not worth reading. That is more true than ANY religion.

Jena – I see the tables are turned and now you are making "fundamentally wrong assumptions" in logical thinking, as you previously put it..

By the way, for someone who claims to use so much logic...you sure do not seem to apply it. However, you are a lost child....so I am not surprised.....poor soul....

Figures when you can't refute a claim you just ridicule it. That's called ad-hominem, also a fallacy in critical thinking. Doesn't make you look smarter; just without a good argument.

Incidentally, are Chrsitians the byproduct of incest dating back to Adam and Eve? Because they were the only two created by your imaginary friend, right?

Jena – no one knows for sure how God created everything and it doesn't matter. Whole point is we are here. Chrsitians cna support creationism or evolution becasue it really doesn't matter – it's what we call a small rock issue. Jesus was more concerned with how we honor the Father and trying to be decent beings.

I AM NOT SAYING ALL RELIGIONS ARE CORRECT IN THEIR TEACHINGS. THERE ARE DEFINITELY ONES THAT ARE QUESTIONABLE. FOR SOME ISLAM IS CRAZY, BUT MOST OF US FEEL THAT WAY BECAUSE WE LIVE HERE IN AMERICA. IF WE WERE BORN ELSEWHERE ISLAM WOULD BE NORMAL. DONT MISTAKEN AMERICAN FREEDOM ( WHICH BY THE WAY IS NOT TURNING OUT TO BE SO GREAT AFTER ALL) FOR TURNING AGAINST ANOTHER RELIGION.

It is just simply another catholic priest expressing his true feelings. Now the Vatican can go ahead and deny it happened ,and move the priest to another location

Thank goodness all the priest needs to do is believe that Jesus is his Savior and say he's sorry, then it's off to heaven just like before. And we wonder why they aren't deterred from things like this >.< How about being good for it's own sake, because other people naturally have rights too?

Why are atheists always called "atheist liberals"? How do you tell? Either "atheist liberal" has become a tautology and one or other word should be dropped to save e-ink, or there are atheistic conservatives out there. What do the atheist cons think and are their views acceptable to Christians? I am atheist. In economics I am somewhat conservative, socially somewhat liberal, occassionally conservative. I try to live by a set of ethical tenets, many that predate or parallel Christianity yet Christians claim and firmly believe to be their own. Many of my beliefs come from the Enlightenment. I am educated in science, particularly Natural Selection and with enough Physics, Maths and Chemistry to understand as well as the next person how this universe and the life on it seems to have come about. I read classical humanities, some Sociology and Anthropology and have read much of the Bible. I have tried to understand the elements of Christology theat have split the Christian churches over the last two millenia. I am generally happy and not miserable. I "sin" most everyday and I am "righteous" as much as I seem able to be. I rejected religion after careful, deep, long, consideration. But none of that matters. I have done nothing to help end abuse of children by adding my weight to the call to shine more light on church-hidden child abuse. So, yes, I guess that makes me a lazy atheist.

@Nick–your argument is weak! If it takes a GOD to make something from nothing, then it would take a GOD to make a GOD. The "everything exists", so a GOD had to create it, is lame...it would never holdup in court, or in a sane brain!

I am a happy, proud, non-bigoted, optimistic, people-loving and accepting Athiest. I don't dwell on the past and obsess over how we got here. I move forward and try to be the kindest person to my fellow human regardless of what he/she believes. If going to church or believing in a higher being floats your boat, go for it but don't try to shove it down my throat or say I am a bad person because I don't believe the same things you do. Your bibles say, "do not judge lest ye be judged." LIVE it, don't just preach it.

As for the priest that did this to those innocent children, he deserves punishment equal to his crimes.

    • A recent vatican statement

"The truth is there will always be a little bit of molestation—it's simply unavoidable," Vatican spokesperson Rev. Federico Lombardi said. "But the fact that young boys have gotten much more attractive over the past few decades is no excuse for the blatant defiance of church limits that have been in place for centuries."
