Obama to send up to 1,200 troops to Mexico border

President Barack Obama will deploy up to 1,200 more National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico, an administration official told CNN on Tuesday.

In addition, Obama will request $500 million in supplemental funds to current spending for enhanced border protection and law enforcement activities, the official said.

The National Guard troops will help with drug enforcement efforts and intelligence efforts until Customs and Border Patrol can recruit and train additional officers and agents to serve on the border, the official said.

The news followed Obama's lunch meeting with Senate Republicans, where Sen. John McCain of Arizona raised the issue of increased border security. McCain and fellow Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, as well as Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, have called for Obama to send more troops to the border region.

"It's simply not enough," McCain said Tuesday on the Senate floor. He called for 3,000 more National Guard troops just for the Arizona-Mexico border.

Giffords, who had called for the National Guard's deployment immediately after the March 27 murder of Cochise County rancher Rob Krentz, said Obama's step was "the right thing."

"Arizonans know that more boots on the ground means a safer and more secure border," Giffords said in a written statement. "Washington heard our message."

So what are HIS people getting mad at him because he is not willing to help them?? so now he is going to teach them a lesson or WHAT. then what needs to happen is every mexican that tries to come in the US needs to be shot and killed. if we have to send troops there at least let them shoot who tries and crosses the boarder.

Its good that we are sending national guard in. Obviously this a is a big probably in the Southern States. But I do not like the fact the President of Mexico came here to lecture us. He fogets his is a failed state where drug lords influence and run the various territories of Mexico. The central government does not have the reach or resources to go after these folks and sometimes police and other governement offcials are also tied to the mob families. President Calderone needs to wake up and so do we. Most people jumping the border are poor families who have been failed by their own governement looking for a better life. IF we can help clean up Mexico and have strict law enforcement and Individual and Commerce laws in place then we would not have to send all our manufacturing over to China. Never the less the borders need to watched closer. The threat of AlQaidi using that as an entry point to plan mass destruction should be on top of mind.

Right, Janet. Because no Americans cleaned anything before a Mexican was willing to do it for $2 per hour. Hello, genius, no American will do it for $2 per hour. That's why so many Mexicans are doing the jobs – they undercut wages, including for people that come to America legally and for teenagers needing their first jobs.

When Tyson was raided a few years ago, ICE cleaned out all the illegals and the company couldn't replace the workers at the wages they were paying the illegals, so they (wait for it!) raised their wages and AMERICANS lined up out the door for a job. Illegals depress wages, repeat that ten times fast!

I don't know, but I do believe that all illegal crossers into the border should be treated as enemy combatants. That doesn't necessarily mean shoot to kill, but it should at least mean imprisonment, and I believe we should negotiate a treaty with Mexico where they pay a fine for each of their citizens we catch crossing our border illegally. Either that, or they can patrol their border, and if one method or another doesn't work, we declare shock & awe war in response to their slow, gradual invasion.

Neoconservatives are not going to be happy if we shut off their corporate benefactor's supply of cheap labor and reduce citizen unemployment. It goes against everything they stand for.

Just 1200 more to sit and watch the people cross. No way is this truely a militarized border since we have jailed people for shooting in the past. I don't undertsand what kind of deterent this is. Our own economy is the best deterent right now....no jobs to cross over for. In July, the police will begin to try and send them back if they "suspect" they are illeagal. I give that a better chance than sending the military although its going to entangle regular citizens since none of us carry around a birth certificate.

At least he has accomplished more in his 1 1/2 yrs than was accomplished in the prior 8. This President has tried to tackle all the issues that have languished for many years. Comments that this President hasn't done this or that 2 yrs in office after the prior administration's record is ridiculous. These issues would not still be necessary to tackle now if the Republicans hadn't done anything except watch out for corporations and the wealthy.

It's just a smoke screen. He's doing this to make himself look better, all the while trying to get this open borders legislation passed to grant amnesty to the 40 million or so illegals already in the US. The troops will probably have orders to only go after drug smugglers, and to hand out water bottles to illegals but to let them pass. And it will be an excuse to tell the local authorities to back off the illegals.

In 2007, Republicans blocked immigration reform. In 2010, Republicans and Democrats alike told Obama he shouldn't focus on immigration reform right now, as Americans are more concerned with job loss and the economy. Since he did push through financial reform, righties are b!tching about the lack of immigration reform; if he went with immigration reform, righties would be focused on financial reform or something else. He's no wizard; focus on what he IS doing versus what he isn't doing, and trust he'll get to it. Obama has accomplished more in 1 1/2 years of presidency than many presidents do in four, sometimes eight.

You guys might want to research that Bush did not send troops. Btw no fan Bush ( honestly Obama either last one I like was our flawed Pres.Clinton) but the truth is he did send troops. It is National Gaurd being requested and Obama wants 500 million more for protecting US borders. At this time there are only going to free up time for boarder patrol. Search rueters and AP the complete story on this.

It is getting a little 'old' now comparing Bush's inadequacies to Obama... your boy owns the Presidency – it's his turn! Face it, he's f'ing up big time on a number of fronts (i.e. US perception around the world, fighting the wars, protecting americans from illegals, NASA, unemployment, civil rights to terrorists, tax cheats in his administration, US ownership of banks – car companies – insurance companies, etc... the list goes on and on about the big 'O' he'll never see the second term . I just wonder how long it will take to undo the damage?

Look at all these dumb liberals! Did you guys even pay attention to what Bush was trying to do with the border? Oh I forget, liberals don't let facts get in the way of hyperbole.

@Chet... look we can talk all day about Bush vs. Obama, honestly – who cares, election time is over and it's his time to produce! How has your life improved under your Obama? I'm honest with you, I can't come up with one (1) point... can you? Our children and their possibly their children are totally screwed with the debt situation. Do you 'feel' as safe today as you did say three years ago? I don't... you've got to admit he's pushing an agenda that's the opposite of Bush – can you deny it? No one tackled the border situation... Clinton, Bush and now Obama... they all want the almightly latino vote!

Bush did nothing? He signed the Secure Fence Act of 2006 into law, after years of opposition for Democrats, whose only policy position on this subject is mass legalization, encouraging more illegal entries.

You people defending Obama are delusional.

Better late than never, true, but still late, and unfortunately this is probably all this joker is ever going to do. BTW, 25 years or so from now when some of the secret files get declassified, people will realize that our previous president was better than 90% of them.

Really, Libs? Try doing a little research before spouting off your knee-jerk anti-Bush rhetoric. Bush tried to do plenty at the border, a lot of which was blocked by the Libs in Congress. It's obvious that Bush was not the best President in history however history will treat him a lot kinder than most of you libs can even imagine in your wildest nightmares. Regarding your dude in the WH – if I were a lib I'd be pretty p.o.'d by now seeing as he has broken pretty much most of the promises that he made during his pretty campaign speeches. Transparency? HAH! Bipartisanship? PuhLEASE!! End earmarks in Congress? Uhhh, yeah right!!! No more no-compete contracts with the Gov? Crickets... No more hiring lobbyists into the WH? tick tick tick ... Close Guantanamo? well? Anyone? Buehler? Anyone? Direct, no-condition peace talks with our enemies leading to global cooperation? Dream on !!!!!!!!!! Your man is becoming the same cancer to your party that Bush was to his, and in 1/8 the time – now THAT'S one accomplishment that he CAN claim...

@Jbrun: Yes I do feel safer, considering we've finally started to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan head on, mind you that's where we actually got attacked from on 9/11... Iraq just wasn't a threat, and now it's even less of one. What in your mind makes you feel truly less safe? (I have several more points on what Obama has done... but for now I want to keep the discussion on one subject)

      AWM
You asked what the other 43 president's did,Here is your answer.
During the Great Depression, President Herbert Hoover ordered
the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order to make jobs available
to American citizens that desperately needed work.

Harry Truman deported over two million Illegal's after WWII to
create jobs for returning veterans and to stop the drain on the economy.

And then again in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower deported 13
million Mexican nationals! The program was called 'Operation *******'
so that American WWII and Korean veterans had a better chance at jobs.

It took 2 years, but they deported them!

Now, if they could deport the illegal's back then, they can sure do it
today!! If you have doubts about the veracity of this information, enter
Operation ******* into your favorite search engine and confirm it
      for yourself.

Reminder. Don't forget to pay your taxes... 12 million Illegal Aliens
      are depending on you.

I am fluent (in both languages) and am ashamed of so many of you making racists remarks. If you think that "White" is a race, trace your lineage! You all originated from elsewhere also, probably when immigration laws did not even exist. You sailed over on a ship from Europe, but not before picking up Africans on the way to be your slaves/property.
