Tornado touches down in Illinois, police say

A tornado touched down in central Illinois on Saturday, police said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The Peoria County Sheriff's Office said the tornado touched down in Elmwood, Illinois.

Pictures from CNN affiliate WMBD showed a twisted gas station awning and streets covered with debris, branches and broken glass.

The tornado ripped through downtown Elmwood, damaging several buildings, WMBD reported. The tornado also led authorities to shut down major roads in the area, WMBD said.

Severe weather was reported across much of central Illinois Saturday night as much of the area remained under a tornado warning, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm in Parkersburg was in 2008, seems like only yesterday though. My prayers to all those effected in Streator, Dwight, and Elmwood.

well i was in Dwight IL when the tornado hit, i work at the mcdonalds there and i would have to say that i was in the safest part of that town when the tornado hit. All of us that were at work last night had to stop what we were doing and grab some coats to go sit in the freezer. The freezer in basiclly a steal box. We could hear pretty much everything out side. Alot of my co-workers live in Dwight and alot of them were scared. We were in the middle of a shift chang when it hit and one worker who lives in Coal city was on there way to work when the rain got so bad that she couldn't see and she ran of the road in to a corn field. I heard that the school's roof was damaged and that the one of the trailer parks was destroyed a few houses were hit as well. I live in Mazon and it only 15mins north of Dwight and all we got was hard rain. i pray that everyone made it out ok.

Our thoughts and prayer are with those affected by the storms. I'm form Peoria and my husband is from Chicago. Thankfully I have been spared the "Dan" comments that everyone is talking about (I currently live in Phoenix, AZ). We are just looking forward to the drive back home. Does anyone have any up-to-date news? Living way out here is like living in the dark when things happen back home.

my husband is from elmwood and still has family there and in yates city, we now live in bartonville, which is about 20 minutes from there. there is a lot of damage, but all mostly by the square of town and a few blocks up. its very sad, elmwood is such a beautiful little town, who takes pride in their apperance and their historical buildings. its so gut renching when something like this happens so close to home and to people you know and love. the are now not allowing anyone unless you are part of emergency crew go through the town. the police are checking id's to make sure you have an elmwood address. there is also rumor that the town is going to end up tearing down 85% of their historical buildings because of the damage.

Be careful what you wish for because it could come back on you! Also, I am a truck driver and Elmwood is 195 miles(3 1/2 hrs) south, southwest of Chicago. I pray that all the families in those areas hit are all safe and accounted for! God Bless you all.

Wow, "new jobs for wetbacks," eh? The fact that you were able to find a way to degrade people during an event like this astonishes me. I think you meant to leave this post on the "Arizona Immigration" comment page. Do yourself a favor and stop using anonymity to leave hateful remarks. Be a big boy and use comment pages to leave intellectual comments. Stop being hateful and pray for the people of Central, Illinois.

All I can say to Dan and Howie is you can't fix stupid. They should quarantine people like you in one area of the country to save the rest of us!
