U.S. suspends deepwater drilling again

The Interior Department says the moratorium is a chance to learn from the BP spill.

The federal government announced Monday it is issuing a new moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico effective until as late as November 30.

A previous six-month ban issued in the wake of the Gulf oil disaster was thrown out by a federal judge. Last week, a federal appeals panel rejected the government's request to overturn the lower court judge's decision. Obama administration officials have repeatedly indicated their intention to reinstate the moratorium since the initial ruling.

The Department of Interior said the moratorium was backed by a record that stated allowing deepwater drilling to continue "would pose a threat of serious, irreparable, or immediate harm or damage to the marine, coastal, and human environment."

The moratorium, according to the statement, allows operators to show they can respond effectively to oil spills in the Gulf.  It will also facilitate an assessment of "strategies and methods" in the event of another deepwater rig blowout, while also allowing for additional "collection and analysis of key evidence regarding the potential causes" of the BP oil spill.

Of course any sane lawmaker would temporarily stop deep Ocean Oil drilling until the present environmental disaster is sorted out and the existing technology for dealing with deep Ocean Oil well blow-outs are totally gone over and if needed, updated and improved upon before allowing any further chances of greatly multiplying the problem now going on in the Gulf of Mexico.

Regretfully, the Republican funded Big Oil connected Federal Judges in the Gulf States will try to overthrow any Democratic attempts to obtain a temporary freeze and Big Oil's close friend in the US Supreme Court, Chief justice Roberts would lead his ultra-right conservative cabal in favor of Big Oil as well.

It appears the only way for real regulations and restrictions to be placed on Big Oil is for America's voters to elect more Democratic lawmakers and vote out the corrupt Big Oil connected Republican politicians now in public service.

WHY have they lost FIVE WEEKS to make a new cap???

your web-stalking might have one (or more than one) of four possible origins:
      .
      1. you are one of the people responsible of the bad maintenance of the oil rig, then, of the accident and the 11 deaths
      .
      2. you are a BP's manager or a BP's official or a BP's engineer or a BP's PR-man (maybe, one of a larger PR "crew") that defends the indifendible

It would appear to me that if another Federal Judge voids the moratorium the administration would not only be wide to appeal but also invoke their administrative clout and require the various drilling sites to demonstrate their ability to do so safely. That is, halt the drilling until the drillers can properly comply with the requirements of MMS including a properly comprehensive and adequate recovery program if the safety measures do not work, a proper environmental impact and mitigation report, etc. This would cost the drillers a hell of a lot more than a short moratorium.

This is a Global Disaster. Stop being cynical about the Iranians and take their help. They are experts in this subject whether or not the US government agrees. Let political ego not compromise the interest of the ordinary Americans and the humanity at large.

By refusing or rather not even acknowledging the help offered by Iran, the crisis is not going to be resolved anyways. It’s only worsening by the hour. The relief well and dispersents and etc etc are all lies. Neither US government nor BP knows wat to do about the leak. Eventually Mr. Prseident may decide to nuke the well. But that's even worse than the leak. The Gulf coast and its ecology would change for the next 10000 yrs if nuked. If the oil spill reached the northern parts of the Atlantic, it could disrupt the flow of ocean currents thereby adding to the global warming effects viz. El Nino, hurricanes etc.
If the well is nuked, it will destry all ocean life in the gulf of mexico. So, the only logical way out is to take foreign help from nations that have the necessary skill, be it the enemy, for the greater good of humanity.

The help offer by Iran is so strictly censored by the government that not even the so-called free press/media is talking about it.

IRAN most certainly has the skills required for this kind of operation. Truly, we are too obsessed with Israel, blinded and drugged, so as not to distinguish between friends and foes.

Let the Heavens above and Earth below shower their blessings on us so that we may rid ourselves of Zionist thoughts and feelings.

Go ahead Mr. Obama and take help from Mr. Ahmedinejad before the oil reaches the shores of Manhattan

US is so obsessed with Israel that it can see nothing beyond. Not even nations who want an opportunity to be friends of America.
That be the case, Iran does not get any audience with the US government, media and planners.
Otherwise, no wise government or nation would refuse Iranian help in containing this oil spill disaster.

Iranians are willing to help. Are Americans willing to be friends?

This is really strange. US can welcome Netanyahu who only wants to take from America viz. money, security guarantees, technology, defense equipment, charity etc. but is estranged with Ahmedinejad who wants to give help and expertise to stop this spill that has turned into an environmental disaster threatening global ecology.

May good sense prevail and US accept the help offer from Iran

really don't see no reason why US should not take help from IRAN.
Both BP and US government are buying time in hope that the well would eventually run dry. The whole crap about drilling of relief well is a big lie. By the time it is dug, twice the amount of oil would have leaked into the gulf as compared to today.

US does not have any know-how to stop this spill, so why not let those deal with this mess who really have the capacity and expertise to handle such catastrophe.

Mr. President, if u're listening, pls wake up and ring up the Iranian President. Let their offer to help not go in vain.

Why is no news channel talking about the IRANIAN offer to help stop the oil leak?

Just because they are under sanctions for whatever reasons sponsored by the US goverment does not mean they are barred to even help on matters that are now beyond the capacity of US government or BP.

Despite the danger growing every minute and the environment being damaged with every barrel of leaking crude, we Americans are still arguing whether the IRANIANs are experts or not.

Lets stop being skeptical about others abilities just because we have failed. failed our nation, our environment and our marine life.

The world knows that the Iranians are experts in drilling and oil leak prevention and containment. Even the oil producing nations would bet for their skills in this crisis. It is us who are full of doubts. and the only reason for this is Israel. We see everyone who is Israel's adversary as our enemy. Anyone who talks anti-Zionist becomes our hate symbol. Lets get out of this Zionist mindset and this Iranophobia. It is our nation and its environment at stake today.

We need to rise above our political difference, they can be settled sometime else.

Lets call for the IRANIANs now before its too late to do anything better

What US needs today is friends. Friend who can help. Ask yourself one question. IRAN, so-called US enemy, has atleast help to offer in this moment of crisis. Wat does Israel have to offer? I'll tell you wat. Israeli PM has to offer a visit in this moment of crisis to ask for more US help, arms, money, fighter jets etc. This is wat US' friends have to offer. If US has friend like Israel, it surely doesn't require enemies.
