Tea Partiers 'racist'? iReporters sound off

iReporters Jason Asselin, left, and Omekongo Dibinga sound off on the NAACP's recent resolution regarding Tea Partiers.

CNN.com readers and iReporters have had a passionate response to the NAACP’s resolution condemning Tea Partiers for having “racist elements.”

“We take issue with the Tea Party’s continued tolerance for bigotry and bigoted statements. The time has come for them to accept the responsibility that comes with influence and make clear there is no space for racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in their movement,” NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous said.

iReporter Omekongo Dibinga posted a video, telling CNN, “If the Tea Party wants to become a credible organization, it has to show leadership when racist acts are committed by its members."

He went on to mention things he believes the Tea Party could do to combat racism: “The Tea Party can also partake in events that promote respect for other groups in a non-reactionary capacity, such as MLK Day events. The Party can also call out individuals by name who commit racist acts.”

Jason Asselin, who has attended some Tea Party events, disagreed, saying in his own iReport video that the resolution was not fair.

“All organizations have people among them that are there for the wrong reasons, even the Tea Party has these type of people. If people were to pay attention, they might see these people being asked to leave,” he said. “Everyone has a right to free speech but even that should have its limits.”

Commenter “SJS52987” wrote, “If the Tea Party isn't racist, how is that every time I ask one of them a legitimate policy question, they can't answer it without mentioning President Obama's race?”

“Bigolug” wrote, “I'm sure there are a few racists involved with the Tea Party, just like there are racists involved with the NAACP. To label the whole Tea Party movement as racist is just a stretch and most likely politically motivated.”

lets get one thing straight..the NAACP exists ONLY to extort dollars from working people who aren't lazy or uneducated. I am a manager in a store and I can tell you the only workers who give their all are whites, asian and latinos..the AA's can only talk about human resource this or reumatism and I can't work that...the NAACP and Affirmative Action are the biggest destroyers of a quality work product in our nation..tea party is not racist, just tired of being taxed more so lazy sobs can sit on their a– all day and complain about things none of our current citizens had any control over

First off I am not racist. When black people don't like the message the only thing to do is revert to the tried and true come back they must be racist. I really believe they are doing more harm to their cause by taking that road all the time. They should judge the message on it's content only.

It cracks me up that there are some people here who compare the NAACP to the KKK... Last time I checked the NAACP didn't lynch, enslave, torture, assasinate any white people. Come on white people...The Tea Party are a bunch of rich old white people who think that this country belonged to them. It belongs to the American Indians that you took it from. Plus you are going to have accept white people...you are going to be a minority soon.

Honest question for those supporting the NAACP's position: What if the tea party made a group called NAAWP, and randomly protested events where they didn't think there was an equal representation (for example, boycotting the NFL or NBA). I'm no racist, but its very hard to notice a majority of the race in some major sports. I'm not complaining about it, cause thats how things are. But what if white people, complained and boycotted these sports? What would the NAACP do then? They'd only be doing the same thing that NAACP has been doing and continues to do.

The NAACP was originally created for a great reason and accomplished many things over the years, but now it is just getting silly. You can't just boycott/condemn/protest whenever something doesn't go your way or you don't like political views of a group. This is the 21st century, yes racism can still exist (and not just from white people), but for the most part now people are chosen based on their merits. In the NAACP's eyes: if a black person receives a job over a white person, the NAACP only sees it as another # not caring whether or not merits were considered. Yet if a white person receives that same job instead, it is unfathomable for the NAACP to consider that maybe that person might have had a better application, recommendations, etc. It is seen as this company must be racist, we must protest.

Bottom Line, the NAACP calling someone racist is like the pot calling the kettle black.....

This is nonsensical propaganda spread to further the amnesty agenda. The Tea Party is anti-immigration and our corrupt Congress will do anything to maintain the supply of cheap labour, including using NGOs to spread lies about amnesty oponents being racists. The truth is that poor black people are hardest hit by immigration both in jobs and housing.

I feel like I dont have a party to belong to. I was so disgusted with the bush era that I voted for obama because I beleived he was going to make a diference for the people. I thought he would go after big business and put the people who ruined us financially in jail. That never happened, he just threw money at the problem and didnt change a thing. It blows my mind that this administration takes credit for helping the economy when in fact they took americas hard earned money and gave to the crooks that burned us. how is that worth taking credit for? I never signed on for all this government spending and debt that will be handed down to our childeren and their children. I was hard on bush for what he did to us and how he started to strip away our freedom and spend our hard earned money but what obama is doing isnt any better. I feel like both parties Dems and Repubs work against the US people in a very creative way. They swing the people from left to right while giving us the bone the whole time. With Bush we where pulled so far to the right that all we wanted to do was move the the left. Now the Dems are pulling us so far the left that the country wants to move more towards the right. Through this process the country as a whole is getting burned. They are blowing all of our hard earned money while we are not focussed on what is really going on. they keep us worried about the stuff that isnt important so we never focus on what is. For all the people of color that think what obama is doing for you is good think again. He wants to take money from the people who are making it and give it to the people who dont. This form of govenment has been tried in the past and it doesnt work. America is great beacuse of capitalism and the freedom of the people. What people need to understand is there isnt going to be any social services when we are all broke. You think obama is going to care about the poor when he is living like a king. Remeber it is the tax payers that pay for these services not the government. We need to reward people wo work hard and pitch in and force the free loaders to earn their keep. I dont care what color you are you need to pitch in. When you hear of welfare checks getting spent in strip clubs and casinos someone should be put in jail. when you hear of mothers and fathers in the club haveing fun when their parents are at home raising their kids with welfare money someone needs to go to jail. When big business runs their businesses into the ground then need a bailout because they are too big to fail then someone need to go to jail. There is only one party that remotely cares about this things and it is the tea party. For all the people that think this movement is about race then you are not paying attention. The tea party needs more people of color to support it so these allegations can stop. If you work hard and have a good job how can you not agree with what the tea party people are about. If you are against keeping your hard earned money and not suppoerting the people that fund this country then you are a dead beat and shouldnt have a say. I am sick of all the BS and hand outs and the tea pary is the party is the one that feels the same. If you are of color and make a good living and want to keep more of your hard earned money then now is your time to speak up!

    o For ignorant: SuzanneNY
Gitmo; open and operating. Totally Georgie Bush’s fault
Iraq; we're still there. Totally Georgie Bush’s fault, no WMD, but he did give us lots of lies.
Afghanistan; we're there more than ever, and more troops are dying than ever. Totally Georgie Bush’s fault, he should have gone there instead of Iraq.
Economy; still in the tank even after the President's stimulus package was passed by his House and his Senate. Totally Georgie Bush’s and his repugnant-kin fiends fault
Immigration reform; not on the horizon. 8 years of Bushie and nothing done
Cap and Trade legislation; not on the horizon. Its coming.
Our foreign relations; No better than when Bush was in office. Yeah, Bush really made us look like real “nice” people, take years to undo that.
Our debt; record levels. Totally Georgie Bush’s fault
The balance of trade; still bad, getting worse. Georgie Bush’s and his repugnant-kin fiends fault. Sent the jobs overseas
The Gulf Oil Spill; he played golf, watched concerts, and held fundraisers for 3 weeks before putting forward any meaningful response
Georgie Bush’s and his repugnant-kin fiends fault. Remember Georgie was a failed oilman, so when he got in office he did them some.
favors by loosening up the oil drilling regulations. Don’t worry we KNOW what we are doing, trust us.
Now, some things that have worked out for him.
He passed ObamaCare. While this is a victory, the majority of Americans want it repealed. So, arguably, his greatest achievement is widely disdained.
I don’t want it repealed! I don’t have health care, My job doesn’t provide it and it cost to much on the open market..
As of today, passed financial reform. The jury is out on how good this is going to be for the country. This is needed to prevent what Georgie and his fiends did
To the US economy from happening again
He won a Nobel Prize for . . . . uh . . . . being elected president? At least he’s trying to do something, can’t say that about Georgie. What did he do for this
country that was good for us.

Well, if you think about it, the NAACP, by definition, is 'racist.' National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is what it stands for. Remember, 'white' is a color, too. Speaking from a point of physics, white is the combination of ALL colors in the spectrum, so when the NAACP says the stuff they say, I have to wonder who they're talking about.

Remember the old childhood thing where a child will say 'If you point one finger at someone, you're pointing three at yourself?' Maybe the NAACP ought to take that to heart.

The Tea Party condones this by not policing their ranks. You can see this even when Sarah Palin gets up to speak, the racist signs and banners wave and bob openly. I have yet to hear her once address this in front of the faces, in fact she smiles and openly encourages them. I'm not saying that the NAACP doesn't have their own racist elements. We all know about Jesse Jackson's open-mike comments about Obama.
