The USS George Washington aircraft carrier participates in exercises with the Korean navy.
Anti-submarine exercises and flights from U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptors were the focus Monday of the second day of the “Invincible Spirit” exercises by U.S. and South Korean forces, according to news reports from the Korean peninsula.
Four F-22s, the United States’ most advanced stealth fighter, flew missions over South Korea for the first time, said the commander of the U.S. 7th Air Force, Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Remington, according to a report from South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
"As with all of our combined air assets in theater, the F-22s stand ready to respond in the defense of the Republic of Korea," Remington said at Osan Air Base, according to Yonhap.
At sea, a group of 20 U.S. and South Korean vessels, led by the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, practiced anti-submarine warfare, according to a Voice of America report from the 97,000-ton carrier.
"Our intent is to improve defense capabilities in areas such as anti-submarine warfare, air defense and anti-surface warfare," the VOA report quoted Rear Adm. Dan Cloyd, commander of the George Washington’s strike group, as saying.
The exercises come after the March sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan in which 46 sailors were killed. An international inquiry found a North Korean torpedo attack was behind the sinking, but Pyongyang has denied any responsibility and has threatened to a “physical response” to the U.S.-South Korean exercises.
U.S. vessels will come no closer than 200 kilometers to the maritime boundary between North and South Korea waters, according to the VOA report.
U.S. Navy Cmdr. Peter Walczak on board the George Washington told VOA that the anti-submarine exercises are routine for U.S. forces.
"The only extra precaution is that, maybe, were more observant to what is going on in the area. A little more sensitive to intel reports, what have you. The ship itself, the airplane flying, the schedule, it is pretty much what we do with standards operations. Our alert posture is not necessarily any higher than any other time during normal operations," VOA quoted him as saying.
Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, said “Invincible Spirit” is the first of a series of exercises to be held off the Korean Peninsula.
“These defensive, combined training exercises are designed to send a clear message to North Korea that its aggressive behavior must stop,” Sharp said in a statement.
The current exercises continue through Wednesday. Tuesday is the 57th anniversary of the armistice which ended the three-year long Korean War.

First of all, allow me to show my strongest support to both S Korea and the U.S.A., who have been acting as joint defense and as a deterrent to lil kim's military adventure..Most S Koreans view lil kim negatively in the view of cheonan attacks and never has Korea-USA relations been stronger than now as displayed by USAF dispatching F-22 Raptors & Nuclear powered USS George Washington..I want to applaud both allies for being patient with impetuous & petulant lil kim..But no war in Korea please..I can only hope lil kim won't be foolhardy enough to launch the second korean war of if he does that will be a dead meat.

To the people who think nukes are the anwers for everything, you're morons. The last resort to ever go to is Nukes, and the damging effects of that is horrible. Nuclear missles don't just take the lives of 'the bad guys' they destroy entire cities. Children are killed. It's a constant reminder I get since my boyfriend is in the nuclear program. I pray to god that he never get's the order to launch, becuase those death's will be on his hands for a service he pledged to this country. Never assume that killing families and other people just becuase 'you don't like them' is okay. You don't even understand the reprocautions that come.
And just as a little side note China backs North Korea, and we back South Korea. A war over there would be absolutely horrible for the U.S. econmy and many lives would be taken over a conflict that isn't even ours to begin with. The very last thing this nation needs is a war, especially one involving China (though it would be interesting since China has invested quite a lot in the U.S....)

North Korea is poor because (1) they practiced socialist policy and (2) they devoted too much resources in defense (35% of their GDP?). For (1) we need to remind Nancy Pelosi not to turn USA to a socialist country. For (2), we need to bring US troops home from SKorea so that the North does not feel so much military pressure and devote more resource to feed their people.
The only person in N Korea who enjoys unlimited amount of freedom is dictator lil kim himself..He can eat as much food as he wants while poor N Koreans have to abscond to china in order to search for food to eat..It's kind of ironic that lil kim indulges himself far too much in his own personal freedom while his foreign policy is extremely and absolutely hostile to freedom-loving nations like S Korea & U.S.A. Well according to Korean news reports YTN said lil kim can live up to another 3 years maybe before he dies..
