Smoking baby reportedly has quit

The tubby Indonesian toddler who caused a sensation last spring by enthusiastically puffing on cigarettes in a widely viewed video has quit smoking, according to media reports.

Two-year-old Ardi Rizal of South Sumatra, who reportedly smoked 40 cigarettes a day, has broken his nicotine addiction through a 30-day rehabilitation program, the Jakarta Globe reported Thursday.

"He has stopped smoking and doesn't ask for cigarettes anymore," Arist Merdeka Sirait, chairman of Indonesia's National Commission on Child Protection, said, according to another publication, Earth Times.According to earlier reports, the child was placed in state custody after the video emerged and the boy’s parents said he would cry and throw tantrums if he went too long without smoking a cigarette.

Heavy smoking appeared to have caused the boy’s brain to shrink and could cause other health problems later, Sirait said, according to Earth Times.

"He needs to be in a smoking-free environment so that he doesn't start smoking again," Sirait said.

Anti-smoking advocates say Indonesia’s tobacco industry markets its products to children, according to the Globe.

I have seen this a few month ago on Tv and I was really shocked about. How can parents let their 2 year old baby boy smoke?! I really hope for him, that he will never start smoking again.

Satin is taking over the world? I thought it was muslin. Oh well, my bad.

I'm just hoping the kid didn't put on the requisite 15 quit smoking pounds.

Satin is taking over the World? Man, I thought that was over in the 70's. I had some satin sheets then, but they were cold, and you slid right off them when you were trying to do the nasty. Anyway, I am not a Satinist. Those people hide out in forests and kill Naugas for there hide, and perform other synthetic rituals. Make sure to check the fabric tag, it's a dead giveaway to see if someone is a Satinist.

      AMAZING!
In Indonesia they offer a 30 day rehabilitation program to help the kid stop smoking.

For adults, in North America, they tell you "Quit Smoking!" and they restrict places where you are allowed to smoke. That's all the help WE get!!!!

Geez – people will take any chance to spout their religious beliefs. I read someone on here saying that God gives us all choices in hopes that we will choose "Him." Seriously – you are blogging about this regarding a 2 year old baby smoking cigarettes...haha. I'm sorry, but a baby is not mentally capable of knowing right from wrong. He isn't choosing Satan by smoking. It's ramblings like this that keep me an Athiest.

What!?!?! This is awesome. And some folks frown on smoking due to the health risks, heck, he looks pretty happy to me – keep lighting them up my tella-tubby friend! I can't wait to see the next posting, "Tubby travels the crack society in hopes for a new social habit" or, "Tubby sees Trouble! Stops smoking and starts drinking, go go Tubby!". (have a friggin' sense of humor, will ya!? Hopefully you are mature enough to realize, most folks are simply poking fun...IT'S AMERICA....RELAX....WE ARE ALLOWED TO DO THIS, IT IS ONE OF OUR RIGHTS, get over the fun stuff.

When the story first came out, the father said that if didnt give the toddler his cigarettes, he would have nicotine withdrawl and begin to throw tantrums and "bang his head against the wall", the child is 2, he doesnt understand the urges he was feeling when he wasnt getting his nicotine... but yes.. the parents are extremely undereducated and it was the right thing for the child to be taken out of their custody.

First, it's a pretty rampant problem and this kid was the 'poster boy' of child smoking. Second, it's server space, not column inches in a newspaper or magazine where there's limited real estate.

Studies have shown that damage to the lungs after a decade of smoking a pack a day is fully repaired in less than three years of not smoking.

We are all connected to one another. Very few people have the foresight to realize this. The welfare of your neighbor affects you. The welfare of his neighbor affects him. We rely on other people to harvest food, make clothing, and invent technology. Taxes taken from what we earn go to supporting the less fortunate, both in our country and in other countries. If we have to interact with someone – for example, the employee of a company we are buying a product from – the interaction is affected by the person's upbringing. If they are uneducated, it makes communication with them much more difficult, and we may not end up getting the best product or service as a result. Meanwhile, children who grow up with nothing often become criminals and can create havoc in your life by stealing from you or worse.

It's sad that most people only look out for their own immediate needs, and if you're lucky, the needs of their friends and family. They have no understanding of the effect paying attention to and looking out for strangers could potentially have on them.
