Doctor sued for 'branding' patient's uterus

Dr. Red Alinsod is being sued for engraving his patient's name on her uterus.

A California gynecologist is being sued for branding a patient's name on her uterus using an "electrocautery device."

Dr. Red Alinsod removed Ingrid Paulicivic's uterus during an operation at his Orange County office in 2006, according to the complaint posted on The Smoking Gun's website. The Laguna Beach doctor carved "Ingrid" on the organ, according to the site, because he "did not want to get it confused with others."

Alinsod told the site that labeling of body parts in that manner is not typical. But, he said, he "felt comfortable putting her name on the uterus" since the 47-year-old hairdresser was a "good friend."

Paulicivic's attorney, Devan Mullins, told CNN.com that his client did not know her physician before consulting him for the operation. Paulicivic and her husband learned of the branding during a follow-up visit, the lawyer said.

During that visit, Paulicivic complained to Alinsod about burns to her leg that she suffered during the operation, Mullins told CNN.com. The doctor was looking at images that were taken during the operation, and the couple asked for copies.

"Alinsod hesitated to give them the photos," the attorney said, sparking the couple's suspicion that something was wrong. The doctor told the couple that he didn't know how to copy the images, so the husband, who is a photographer, showed Alinsod how to move the images to a memory card, and the couple took them, Mullins said.

Later in the husband's office, the couple looked at the photos and were shocked to see "Ingrid" spelled out in inch-high letters on her uterus.

"They reacted like anyone would react - 'Oh my God, I cannot believe this happened,' " the lawyer said.

The couple hired Mullins, who tried for 90 days to notify Alinsod of an impending complaint, but the doctor did not react. "That's what's been odd - that we've gotten no response from him whatsoever," Mullins said.

CNN.com spoke with Alinsod's office manager Tuesday, who said that the physician was seeing patients and that he would not comment on the litigation.

According to Alinsod's website, he formerly headed gynecologic services at George Air Force Base in California and Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. He was affectionately called a "Combat Gynecologist" by his colleagues, it says.

I actually thought the doctor branded his own name on the uterus when I first read the headline. I just can't see what the big deal is to this woman.

Being under general anesthesia is a dangerous activity, and caries the real possibility of dying on the operating table. The longer you are under, the more danger you incur. Spending several minutes scrawling a patients name on the only organ in the OR not attached to a human is unforgivable. This activity, if deemed necessary, could certainly of waited until the patient was brought out of general anesthesia.

And just what makes you think that the doctor DIDN'T wait until the operation was over before doing the branding, butthole?

And this is another example of lowlifes trying to get money without earning it. Like I would care at all if my uterus is "branded" after it's removed. It will end up in the trash anyway. I hope this greedy woman doesn't get a penny from this frivolous lawsuit.

This kind of stupid nonsense on the part of patients is why medical bills are so high. This process is actually REQUIRED in many hospitals (this isn't the first time a doctor being sued for this has made the news.. last time I saw it he was sued because of his choice of insignia to use). This is extreme abuse of the law on the part of the patient and SHE should have to pay all legal fees.. and hope she has trouble ever getting any reputable doctor to be willing to risk taking her as a patient. Heck... I want her to start paying an extra premium on her health insurance too so that she can offset part of the costs for this type of frivolous and dangerous lawsuit.

Just another example of an educated FOOL!!
How many others has he disrespected while they were 'UNDER'??
This NUT should have his license revoked!! Seriously!!!
I’d say he’s running neck to neck with a known OB GYN physician who badgers her patients into selling ‘AMWAY’ for her!!!
Yeah, if you’re having hot flashes, break through bleeding, breast lumps or whatever females may complain of …. just stand back and hold your hand out for whatever she pulls out of her ‘AMWAY’ box, after all she believes in the holistic approach. YEAH!!!!
Dag, what is this world coming to???

      @ Dag

The question is just as clear as the writing on the uterus, so there is no need to expand on it!
      I’m just saying!! : )

What I don't understand is....didn't he remove the uterus??? Did he put it back in..? Then yeah he should pay if she kept it, but if she was gonna throw it away anyways.... I've had a hysterectomy and i didn't/don't care what they did to my uterus. It was broke. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Maybe we should all investigate if our tonsils and wisdom teeth were branded or marked in some way. What doctors who made us well again have the nerve to do that to an infected and no longer useful part of our bodies. Shouldn't we all then sue? OK now back to reality – GOOD GRIEF – WHO CARES!!!!!

Jesus would approve, as long as no embryos were harmed in the process.

Yeah, who cares. The only thing this frivolous lawsuit does is raise the rates of malpractice insurance and we all pay.

      I agree!!
And to the idiot who said "Who Cares?", listen; If it was some man's testicle that had been removed, you can believe he'd be screaming like a lil biatch and making a big schadoo about all the people knowing he was ball-less!!!
Then to make matters worst, to find out there was a picture of his one of his gonads out there for the world to see and with his name on it!!!! Ooooh, that doctor would have been biatch slapped all over the U.S. of A.!!!!!

Do any of u realize why the opinions on this story vary so much...its probably bc the story is not well written, the facts are ambiguous and there is no explanation of what the chick is actually suing for...like typical idiots, jumping to conclusions before the facts are known...but i will say this...if he branded it with it still inside her, he should be done bc that is completely unethical, if it was removed before the branding, screw her shes a nut..but if he caused her leg burns for any reason, hes got no chance

Nope, just labeling it to keep things in order. Not like the chick wanted it for anything anyway.

I would honestly feel upset if a doctor wrote on a body part of mine after removing it. Even though it would technically be "medical waste" at that point at time. If there really was a chance that this particular uterus might be confused with another one (which I seriously doubt) why couldn't he just write her name on a bag and put the uterus in the bag? He must have just done it for fun. And to me that is disrespectful. Imagine if a person had an arm or a leg amputated and then the surgical team decided to draw pictures on it before they threw it away. It's just rude.

Another female point of view... This is ridiculous. It's a hunk of rejected meat. I'm sure he examined it and then disposed of it. They think they got themselves a cash cow by suing the doctor. We really need there to be PENALTIES against frivolous lawsuits. Ugh.
