[Updated at 3:22 p.m.] The White House is "disappointed" at the Senate vote blocking the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, "but we'll keep trying," spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday.
[Posted at 3:04 p.m.] A defense bill that includes the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy failed to advance in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday as Republicans closed ranks to keep the bill from coming up for debate.
The bill stalled on a 56-43 vote, four short of the 60 votes needed to break a Republican-led filibuster. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, joined the opposition as a tactical move, allowing him to bring it up later.
Republicans stood united against the measure even though some GOP senators favor lifting the Pentagon's requirement that gays and lesbians keep their sexuality a secret. Republican opponents complained that Democratic leaders are limiting the debate and could have refused to allow GOP amendments to the broader National Defense Authorization Act, which included the "don't ask, don't tell" repeal provision.
GOP senators also disliked Reid's plan to add an immigration-related provision to the defense bill. Reid wants to tack on a measure that would provide a path to citizenship for students and soldiers who are children of illegal immigrants.

Hasn't anyone ever heard of an 'Executive Order?' As Commander and Chief, Obama is authorized to get rid of DADT with only a signature. Not sure why he hasn't done so already.
Unfortunately, he can only stop the discharge process. He can't do away with DADT. Any executive order can be overturned by a future president.

I have no problems with gays in the military causing tension as long as they're all in co-ed camps, and pda/relationships are allowed all around..

If every gay in the military "came out" at the same time, you would have to overturn DADT because the losses to the military would be catastrophic. Instead of trying to keep them in the closet, be glad that they fight for the freedoms that you enjoy, but aren't willing to share.

You kind of miss the point. There are really something like 65000 gays already showering with, living with, eating wtih, and fighting and dying with str8 troops. And mutually saving each otehrs life while accomplishing the mission.
Quite similar to our health club here in MD. About 20% of the members are gay, most openly. Nobody gives a rats ass about the issue, Well stand there bare a$s naked taling about everything from the football game to DADT.

Kinda backwards. Now they have lost the support of so much of their base, though all is not lost. They didn't have the ,moxie or the guts to get the job done.
Including smearing the repubs with the truth – which is the repubs care more about their preducies then defending America aginast terrorism.

An Idea For A Real “American Dream Act” Bill & Counter Attack
First bring back our soldiers from this Afghanistan war that is costly and going nowhere. Middle Eastern and Asians love to see us waste money and go broke fighting for freedom when they don’t really want it. This is their main weapon and we keep falling into their trap. Then we need to regroup military troops and military force to invade/overthrow Mexico’s government turning it into a U.S territory.
The new land will be used as an industrial/business commerce zone. U.S citizens will be able to by property and have a dual citizenship between U.S and Mexico. Mexico will keep its current currency and there current government will be demoted to local municipal law enforcement as long as they surrender to the U.S.
The U.S will be in full control of all laws, local law enforcement, and military control. The path to dual citizenship will require the illegal immigrants living in the U.S to serve in the U.S military for teen years… Along with completing the invasion/overthrow of Mexican government to expand U.S lands, business, and revive our economy. For Mexico citizen requesting to come to the U.S temporary worker programs and legal paths to citizenship & residence will be granted to those who qualify.
