On the Radar: Bishop Long, GOP pledge, U.N. speeches

Atlanta pastor responds to charges - Atlanta pastor Eddie Long, accused of coercing young men to have sexual relationships, won't be interviewed today as planned. Long says his lawyers won't let him talk. But in a statement read on a syndicated radio show Thursday, Long denied he had coerced young church members into sex, as alleged in three lawsuits filed against him.

Long asked for patience "as we continue to categorically deny each and every one of these ugly charges" and requested prayers for himself, his family and the church. He said he will respond to his congregation from the pulpit on Sunday.

GOP agenda –House Republican leaders will unveil a 21-page "Pledge to America" on Thursday that presents a "governing agenda" for what Republicans will do if they win control of Congress in November. CNN obtained a copy of the document Wednesday. READ DOCUMENT (PDF)

The plan focuses primarily on jobs and the economy, with a short reference in the "preamble" to the party's position on social issues. According to the document, House Republicans want to permanently extend all the tax cuts due to expire at the end of this year, give small businesses a tax deduction equal to 20 percent of their income and require Congress to review any new federal regulations that add to the deficit.

Obama, Ahmadinejad to address U.N. - President Barack Obama will urge Israel to accept an "independent Palestine" and call on Palestinians to pursue that goal peacefully in a speech at the U.N. Thursday.

Iran's leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is in New York for the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting and also will be addressing the group. A day before the speech Ahmadinejad lashed out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an interview with CNN's Larry King on Wednesday, calling him a "skilled killer" who "should be put on trial for killing women and children."

BISHOP LONG, I HAVE LISTENED TO YOUR SERMONS AND HAVE BEEN BLESSED BY THEM OVER THE YEARS SINCE YOU WERE IN THE OLD BUILDING. I AM PARTICULARLY AMAZED AT THE AWESOME AND UNIQUE WAY THAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU TO DISSEMINATE CHRIST'S MESSAGE OF LOVE, SALVATION, AND PROSPERITY TO THE WORLD, MANY HAVE BEEN BLESSED IMMEASURABLY BY YOUR MINISTRY. THIS WAS HOW I FELT BEFORE I HEARD OF THE UNSUBSTANTIATED ALLEGATIONS OF IMPROPRIETY LEVIED AGAIINST YOU BY SOME YOUNG MEN THAT YOU DECIDED TO HELP, AND THIS IS HOW I STILL FEEL AFTER HEARING THE CHARGES! IT IS HIGH TIME FOR THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY TO GET TOGERTHER AND SUPPORT IT'S LEADERS WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED THROUGH THEIR TIRELESS EFFORTS THAT THEY ARE PLACED THERE TO SHOW THEM THAT THERE IS A MORE EXCELLENT WAY AND TO HELP THEM LIVE THE ABUNDANT LIFE THAT CHRIST CAME TO EARTH TO GIVE. WHEN THE DEVIL MAKES AN ATTACK ON ONE OF THE MINISTRIES THAT GOD HAS ORDAINED AND HAS BLESSED, WE SHOULD NOT LET THE DEVIL RUIN SUCH AN AWESOME MINISTRY THAT HAS BLESSED PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD FINANCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND INTERMS OF SELF-WORTH, AND DIGNITY. THREE POINTS TO REMEMBER ARE THAT ALL HAVE SINNED AND HAVE COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD, THAT HE WHO IS WITHOUT FAULT SHOULD CAST THE FIRST STONE, AND THAT THESE ARE NOT SMALL CHILDREN BUT ARE YOUNG MEN WHO INSTEAD OF WORKING RESPONSIBLY TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES, WERE WILLING BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION TO STOOP TO THE LEVEL OF ALLOWING SOMEONE TO GIVE THEM A FREE RIDE UNTIL SOMTHING WENT WRONG. THE THING THAT PUZZLES ME IS WHY DID THEY WAIT YEARS BEFORE REPORTING THE FIRST INCIDENT IF INDEED IT HAPPENED? WHY DID THEY NOT REPORT IT TO THE POLICE AUTHORITIES TO INVESTIGATE WHEN IT FIRST HAPPENED, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE MANY INSTANCES WHERE RECENTS REPORTS HAVE BEEN MADE OF THIS NATURE AGAINST THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD, IT APPEARS TO BE A CASE OF SOME DISGRUNTLED EX-MEMBERS IN CAHOOTS TOGETHER AGAINST THE PASTOR AND THE CHURCH WITH NO CONCRETE EVIDENCE AND NO RELIABLE AND CREDITABLE WITNESSES TO CORROBORATE THEIR ASSERTIONS. THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE DEVIL HIMSELF AT WORK IN A VICIOUS ATTEMPT TO DESTROY ONE OF GOD'S BEST MINISSTRIES AND USING THESE YOUNG MEN AS HIS MOUTHPIECE! BISHOP LONG, GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU. MAY HEAVEN SMILE UPON YOU, AND MAY HE GRANT YOU PEACE IN THE MIDST OF THIS STORM. REMEMBER, THIS TOO SHALL PASS, AND GOD DIDN'T BRING YOU THIS FAR TO LEAVE YOU. JASMO (jasmoent@yaahoo.com)
