13 drown, 8 missing after skiff getting Navy aid capsizes

A U.S. Navy boat works to rescue passengers from a capsized skiff in the Gulf of Aden.

Thirteen people drowned and eight are missing after a small skiff packed with more than seven dozen people capsized while getting aid from a U.S. Navy vessel in the Gulf of Aden, the U.S. military said Monday.

The skiff, packed with 75 Ethiopians and 10 Somalis, was spotted adrift in the gulf by a South Korean warship, which asked the guided missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill to provide assistance, according to a statement from the Combined Maritime Forces, which conducts anti-piracy patrols off the east coast of Africa.

The 9,500-ton, 513-foot long Churchill sent an inflatable boat to the aid of the skiff. After determining the skiff was without power, the inflatable towed it out of shipping lanes toward the Somali coast, the statement said.

At about 8:30 am local time Monday, U.S. sailors attempted to distribute fresh supplies to those aboard the skiff. As they did so, the Africans rushed to one side of the vessel, capsizing it, and sending all 85 passengers into the ocean.

Crews from the Churchill and an Australian patrol aircraft were able to rescue 61 of the skiff’s passengers. Thirteen drowned and eight were not found, the statement said.

The Navy was investigating the incident.

Similar to the scenes that I unfortunately have to deal with every day on the subway in NYC......'desperate' people rushing to get their 'desire' with no regard for anything else. Just imagine if all these fat/lazy gits actually had a worthwhile thing to act like donkeys for (e.g. food and water) instead of just trying to get a seat for their 5 min journey.....oh, sorry, we know how Americans act in those situations (New Orleans).

to "Davey" What makes them uncivilized? All you can see is the color of the people. Typical American comment.

How is that a "typical american comment"? They are uncivilized. Maybe you should do some research on Somalia and you will see how messed up that place is. Nothing will help that country until all the warlords and corrupt officials dissappear, but that wont happen because that kind of behavior is the norm over there

The problem is not the area of the world but the culture of the people that inhabit that region. Anywhere you care too go in area's where the population is uneducated and the minority is able to subject the majority of its population in living or existing like animals will of course create conditions that are disgusting and unfit for any living organism let alone HUMANS! I've seen it in even what some would consider calling civilized societies such as India for example is a good reference in this regard and is only one example of hundreds that can be listed.

Unfortunately, the same is true in the US. The minority subjects its will on the majority. Corporations shape everything from policy to what we consume. We are complacent in this country, we've allowed ourselves to get comfortable. A movement is taking over this country and growing daily b/c people are upset. Unfortunately, they're too stupid to understand that the policies and people they are supporting play right into the hands of these big businesses – decreased regulations allows them to run rampant: lower taxes, more outsourcing...the list goes on. So don't think that this is limited to impoverished nations, it's just less overt.

You're all full of it, notice in the story that they made no attempt to get near the first south Korean vessel and vice versa. ? only americans get involved in this bs. Now we'll probably be blamed in their deaths as well.
