UFOs eyed nukes, ex-Air Force personnel say

Seven former U.S. Air Force personnel gathered in Washington Monday to recount UFO sightings over nuclear weapons facilities in decades past – accounts that a UFO researcher says show extraterrestrial beings are interested in the world’s nuclear arms race and may be sending humans a message.

At a news conference at the National Press Club, the six former officers and one ex-enlisted man recalled either personal sightings or reports from subordinates and others of UFOs hovering over nuclear missile silos or nuclear weapons storage areas in the 1960s, '70s and '80s.

Three of the former Air Force officers – though they hadn’t seen the UFOs themselves - told reporters that UFOs hovering over silos around Montana’s Malmstrom Air Force Base in 1967 appeared to have temporarily deactivated some of the nuclear missiles.

Much of the testimony already has appeared in books, websites and elsewhere. But UFO researcher and author Robert Hastings, who organized the news conference, said the time has come for the U.S. government to acknowledge the UFO visits.

“I believe - these gentlemen believe - that this planet is being visited by beings from another world, who for whatever reason have taken an interest in the nuclear arms race which began at the end of World War II,” said Hastings, who added that more than 120 former military personnel have told him about UFOs visiting nuclear sites.

“Regarding the missile shutdown incidents, my opinion … is that whoever are aboard these craft are sending a signal to both Washington and Moscow, among others, that we are playing with fire – that the possession and threatened use of nuclear weapons potentially threatens the human race and the integrity of the planetary environment,” he said.

Former Air Force Capt. Robert Salas – who has written a book about the Montana incidents – said he was underground when a UFO hovered over his missile silo in March 1967, and therefore couldn’t see it. He said one of his guards above ground told him a red, glowing object about 30 feet in diameter was hovering just above the front gate of the facility, in an isolated area far from Malmstrom.

“And just as I [called my commander], our missiles began going into what’s called a no-go condition, or unlaunchable. Essentially, they were disabled while this object was still hovering over out site,” Salas said.

Salas and others said the military urged them at the time not to talk about the incidents.

Retired Col. Charles Halt recalled seeing UFOs over the woods near Royal Air Force Stations Bentwaters and Woodbridge in eastern England in December 1980. He and security personnel were investigating reports of strange lights just outside one of the bases.

“All through the forest was a bright glowing object,” he said Monday. “The best way I can describe it, it looked like an eye – with bright red, with a dark center. It appeared to be winking. It was shedding something like molten metal, was dripping off it.

“It silently moved through the trees, avoiding any contact, it bobbed up and down, and at one point it actually approached us. We tried to get closer. It receded out into the field, beyond the forest, and silently exploded into five white objects – gone. So we went out into the field looking for any evidence, because something had been apparently falling off it – and we find nothing,” he said.

He recalled subsequently seeing other objects in the sky, including one that stopped about 3,000 feet overhead and “sent down a concentrated beam at our feet.” No one was harmed.

“The best way I can equate it is sort of a laser beam. We stood there in awe. Was this a warning? Was this an attempt to communicate? Was this a weapon? Or just a probe?” he said.

At about the same time, he was hearing radio reports from base personnel that beams from some of the objects were “falling into or near the weapons storage area.”

In a staff meeting later, a general decided “it happened off base, so it’s a British affair,” Halt recalled. “In other words, they were loathe to get involved.”

The Air Force investigated UFOs from 1948 to 1969 under a program eventually called Project Blue Book. The service, on its website, says the project concluded that “no UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force has ever given any indication of threat to our national security.” It also says there has been "no evidence that sightings categorized as 'unidentified' are extraterrestrial vehicles."

Salas said the UFO phenomenon “is real, not imaginary.”

“There is current excessive secrecy in our government surrounding this phenomenon,” he said.

A reporter asked how many of the former military personnel subscribed to Hastings’ theory that the message of extraterrestrials is that humans should get rid of nuclear weapons, and how many of them believed that we should get rid of nukes. Of the seven, it appeared that only Salas raised his hand.

I FIND IT VERY SAD READING THROUGH THIS THREAD. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE SO CLOSED MINDED AND NOT WILLING TO APPROACH ANY SUBJECT WITH AN OPEN MIND. NOT UNTIL YOU TRULY LOOK INTO SOMETHING DO YOU KNOW ANY MORE THAN WHAT SMALL AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE WE ALL REALLY HAVE ON SO MANY SUBJECTS. THE ARROGANCE DISPLAYED HERE AND THE INABILITY KEEP AN OPEN MIND REALLY REFLECTS WHY HUMANITY IS IN SUCH A MESS. THERE IS NO REAL TOLERANCE, NO RESPECT FOR OTHERS, AND A LACK OF TRUE INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY. WE HAVE A SERIOUS SELF ORIENTED EGO PROBLEM WITH SO MANY WHO THINK THEY KNOW IT ALL AND HAVE DONE LITTLE TO OBTAIN THERE VAST AMOUNT OF OPINIONS.

CONCERNING UFO'S...I KNOW WHAT I SAW... AND FOR YOU SKEPTICS, KEEP YOUR MIND OPEN ALONG WITH YOUR EYES AND LOOK UP NOW AND THEN...YOU MAY GET THE SURPRISE OF YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT!

There must be security cameras installed on every military facility and nuclear power plant that would have capured the UFOs.

Yep. Are you thinking that these military officers who needed to wait decades to feel like they could violate thier agreements and come forward to speak should go back to those military bases and ask for copies of the videos so we could see them? Or are you thinking that now that these officers have come forward the military is going to say, "yep, they are right, we might as well show the videos now." "By the way, we now sanction anyone who has signed confidentiality agreements and have classified status to violate them, and we'll provide supporting video evidence when you do."

So what's the relevance of asserting that the military must have videos of these incidents? Why are they going to show these videos to us again?

I'd rather worry about if I'm going to be made an alien slave then if I can make the rent this month, to be honest. I think the subject at hand is quite relavent, and why not speculate on the possibility if such a possibility exists. Not all of us are numb minded consumers that can't think past our hand. We need to know what's really going on.

Caveman, why do you really need to know? Why not go on with your life and let the military take care of doing the intelligence gathering and black projects needed to protect ourselves from the ETs, the Chinese, the Russians and that nut in Iran.

So, just live your life and let the military do their job. The less you know on this subject, and the more time our experts have to work on this issue, the better chance we will have to prepare ourselves for a Star Wars kind of future.

And why do you think the military is the answer to everything? This is exactly the kind of thinking that is dooming human existence. Our first impulse is to blow up people or things that don't agree with us, or people or things that we FEAR.

If there are alien races sophisticated enough to visit us, then what makes you think there is ANYTHING we could do to stop them from taking us over, if that's what they wanted to do? Until we have the capability to visit their planets, we will not be anywhere close to their level of advancement.

Our best hope is to simply let them do what they want, and learn to live with EACH OTHER here on earth. Until we can do that first, then all the rest of this alien stuff is - quite frankly - irrelevant.

I see your point Dave, however I feel I can contribute to the situation should they want me to assist. Why not? There's an old saying, if you can do something about it, worry, if not, don't worry. I feel I can do something to help. I'm pretty sure there's some smart people working on the subject, but I think I got a couple of marbles myself that could be useful.

Andrew... Many people do claim to see the things you mention in person... it's not all of our experience. But we should at least listen and look into such claims, if interested, before we choose to dismiss all of them. Truth can pop up in the strangest places. What is that saying concerning Truth, "Out of the mouth of babes" meaning children...(lol and I do not mean hot woman)

Amazing that not more people can adjust to the idea that Earthlings have been destroying earth for centuries. It would only make sense that there is intelligent life somewhere and if they can finally reach us, they will attempt to assist. It's not their fault that we destroyed our planet, so they do not owe us. We are beyond help so it's nice of them to try. It's the exact story I wrote years ago that I let sit on a shelf. It's still not published. They can be the smartest beings in the universe, but that cannot overcome the hatred and destruction that this planet has been built upon.

My best friend saw a UFO once in the mid 80s. He lived on a farm in Nebraska and a UFO landed in his back yard. He went out to investigate and claimed he saw a green light near his retention pond. He said that when he went to the pond it was all dried up and there was a small glob of green ooze on the pond's bottom. He touched it and it burned his finger like hot coal. A few hours later he noticed some green fuzz growing on his finger. Unfortunately, he had licked his finger on instinct from burning his finger and his tongue eventually started growing green fuzz. Almost a day later everything he had touch was overgrown with a green moss-like material. I never saw my friend again. I miss him. He was my friend. Do you have a friend? Do you miss your friend? I do.

Well, these are the questions. Are these "visitors" hostile? Are they here to plunder our resources? That's crazy. First of all, any interstellar civilization would possess such wondrous technologies that anything Earthly would be outdated and unneeded. Our visitors are peaceful and act accordingly. To date, no place on Earth has been invaded or attacked or colonized. They are concerned about OUR hostility, but they're not hostile towards us. They've just been waiting for us to grow up...waiting for us to leave adolescence behind and mature into a civilization that values and fosters peace. It is time for Earthlings to shed their teenage rebelliousness and enter the cosmic culture of peace and light. For Earth to be accepted into the group of interplanetary civilizations we must be peaceful and unified. The larger interplanetary community will not allow us to export our violence and bad behavior beyond Earth. It would not be wise for any civilization whose technological advancements have far outpaced their spiritual and social development to go skipping headlong through space. Universal order, indeed universal law prohibits it. It's time we accepted those responsibilities.

This is entirely your opinion, there is no evidence to support they care if we are peaceful or not. We do NOT know why they are here or what they are doing, any conjecture is our own assumptions and tinged with our ideals. Just because you want peace and intellectualism does not mean aliens care one way or the other.

Yea, good luck with that. Within the next 100 years, once we have conquered and figured out how to live for hundreds of years and once we have figured out the propulsion of ETs, we're going to kick ass. It won't be long before humanity is running this Galaxy. And yes, we will have to be bad dudes to be the top. Kill or die trying, that's humanity's motto. ETs, we're coming for you.

This has been known for a long time. I wonder why it is a story now. I think it is strange that this was the number 1 most interesting story reported by Facebook users on CNN.com and when it reached 5,000 recommendations (far above the next most popular) it disappeared from the webpage.

Anyway, this is nothing compared to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6-giFC0xvc. According to high military and air force officials there are 38 levels above TOP SECRET clearance. Obama, as president, only has a TOP SECRET clearance. How will we ever know anything if the president doesn't even know anything?

I thought secrecy was repugnant to a democracy...
