Upset stomach hospitalizes President Jimmy Carter

President Jimmy Carter, seen here last month, was hospitalized Tuesday.

[Updated at 2:03 p.m.] Josesph-Beth Booksellers has told about 400 attendees that President Jimmy Carter will not be attending the scheduled Tuesday book signing.

The event has not yet been rescheduled, but a Carter Center statement said earlier that the president would resume his book tour next week.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] An employee at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lyndhurst, Ohio, says about 400 people are still waiting at the bookstore to see President Jimmy Carter.

Some have been there since 9 a.m. ET, the employee said.

Carter was initially scheduled to be at the bookstore at 1 p.m., but his staff moved it up to noon prior to the president's hospitalization.

The employee, who declined to identify himself, said there were still Secret Service agents at the store, and there has been no official announcement that Carter is not showing.

[Updated at 1:21  p.m.] Jimmy Carter is "resting comfortably" after being rushed from the airport to a hospital upon his arrival in Cleveland on Thursday morning, according to the ex-president's nonprofit organization.

"While on a flight to Cleveland, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter developed an upset stomach, and, upon arrival, was taken to Metro Health Hospital for observation," said a statement from Carter Center spokeswoman Deanna Congileo. "He is resting comfortably and is expected to resume his book tour this week."

[Updated at 1:10 p.m.] President Jimmy Carter has been transferred to Metro Health Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, after experiencing an unknown health issue on a flight to the city, an airport spokesperson said.

Jackie Mayo, the public information officer for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, said the 39th president was transferred to the hospital at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET after paramedics met Carter's plane upon its arrival.

Carter, who will turn 86 on Friday, was reportedly in Ohio to autograph copies of his new book, "White House Diary," at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in the suburb of Lyndhurst, according to the bookstore.

Since leaving the Oval Office in 1981, Carter has devoted his time to the Carter Center in Atlanta, which monitors elections, fights disease in developing nations and seeks to strike peace deals internationally.

In addition to some controversial comments made in his book, which was released this month, Carter made headlines recently when he negotiated the release of U.S. citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who had been jailed in North Korea.

Why can't people behave as human beings and just say, "I hope he recovers"?. I voted for him but thought he was not a very good president. I did not like many of his views but I would never wish him ill.

While I do not wish death upon him, he was one of the worst presidents ever. He sold out America to it's enemies, castrated the military, and tried to impose socialism years before most knew what it was.
Since leaving office he has shown blatant anti-semitism and open hatred of Israelis while supporting terrorists. He's also meddled in foreign affairs of the U.S. to it's detriment.
My father guarded Carter. He said he was an elitest, condescending jerk. Nice guy? Gave his all for America? Only if you are delusional.

" Hard Right" , Please allow me to express that he is only president which understood Israel and Paletenian problems. He is the only president which brought peace to Middle east. He is only president which made Egypt and Israel to shake hand and work with each other. He is only president which talks truly about Israel crimes. Talking truth does not make you anti Jewish people. You are talking none sense. He is not anti Jewish, but he is expressing treatment of Palestians by Israel is not right, as rest of world expressing. Please do not dump mud on the fact. I guess everybody express fact about Isreal then he must be ,....... I have a great respect on him and I do not agree with your comment and biaseed opinion.

Everybody knows how peaceful it was in the Middle East under Carter's reign. Now there is a fact for you. Peace, right. Peace in the Middle East. If that were the case, how did the Muslim fundamentalist movement start growing so huge at this time? Carter was a moron Matt, I know it is difficult for you, but accept it!

" catahata" It is complicated question to answer in few sentence. We have to partially differentiate growing Islamic fundamentalist in middle east or basically all world with Israel and Palestinian conflict.

Palestinian got radical since there is no movement in resolving Palestinian issues. It is almost 40 years, which they are struggling to come with peace with Israel and have two nations. But Israel do not see her benefit to have peace and continues occupation. In any case we need to do something with 4million Palestinian which lived in same land for thousand years. When we provide the best military to Israel with latest F30, bombs and etc. Israel use those weapons against none armed Palestinian. What do you expect they do? They do not have a weapon and they need to defend them self. That is a reason part of Palestinian become more radical and suicide bombing started, since they do not have tanks, aircraft to defend them self.

However issue of fundamentalist started due to US and other European policy in Middle east. For example Russia invaded Afghanistan for 8 years. US and Saudi provided weapons to Taliban to attack Russia occupation. So in a way we created those guys by training them and providing the required financial elements. Not forgetting Britain, which was occupying Afghanistan before Russian. when soviet union left there was an vacuum in that country and Pakistani Taliban and others used it towards their own ideology. Same time US and other European was building their influence in some middle east country such as Bahrain, Saudi and rest. They built many military bases and trying to control those areas. These expansions did not go well with some people in Afghanistan as well as some middle east countries and some people start creating complication, not going through details. So in a way we built fundamentalist.

However, Islam has not progressed as Christian for last 1000 years ,so there are elements of violence. To conclude, we need to resolve Israel and Palestinian issues and educate Islamic country. But not dominating them.

you are somewhat correct in your analysis there are 5 types of Islam and the western powers – including Germany in WWII – that have contributed to the rise of the sub sets within the Sunni, Shia and Suffi versions of Islam.
Saudi Arabia is extreme radical Sunni Islam and a theocratic state that exports terrorism aimed at the west and the other Muslim sects. The Shia in Iran operate in the somewhat the same manner but look at the modern world through Persian eyes. Both countries have clerics and that is in direct contrast to the Koran -something that the other Muslim countries do not have. Their Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson if you will.
Carter blinking over the hostage situation allowed the clerics to push their way to power after the Shaw was removed.
He like Bill Clinton had a chance and only one chance to reshape the Middle East and he failed.
While I wish Carter a recovery – I hope it is one that does not allow him to wander the earth betraying America.

Were you dropped at birth -several times?? Are we talking about the same President Carter?
Forget all the sentimental BS about him being someones dad or husband – he was a complete failure as a president
do not confuse activity with accomplishments
GB may have tossed gas on the flames of the Middle East – but it was JC who started the fire with his empowering Iran to become a radical Shia theocracy and allow clerics to run the country
