Missing N.C. girl's stepmom admits she wrote ransom note

The stepmother of a missing 10-year-old girl has admitted she wrote a ransom note found at the family's home, Hickory, North Carolina, Police Chief Tom Adkins said Tuesday.

Elisa Baker made the admission during an interview Monday night at the jail where she is held on charges unrelated to Zahra Clare Baker's disappearance, Adkins said. She then requested an attorney, he said. Authorities have obtained an arrest warrant for her on a felony charge of obstruction of justice, Adkins said.

Police have been searching for 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker.

Police have not been able to find anyone who has seen Zahra within the past month, Adkins said, and do not know how long the girl has been missing. The Amber Alert issued Saturday for Zahra is being canceled, he said, and the investigation will shift from a possible abduction to a homicide investigation.

Zahra Clare Baker had a "horrible home life" and was frequently locked in her room, a relative said Tuesday.

Zahra was reported missing about 2 p.m. Saturday. Police have said her father, Adam Baker, and stepmother, Elisa Baker, reported she was last seen sleeping in her bed about 12 hours earlier, at 2:30 a.m.

Authorities on Monday pleaded for swift public help in reconstructing events leading to Zahra's disappearance.

This entire story is very sad. People keep saying it's the relatives fault. The relative reported the living situation to DSS multiple times, but no action was ever taking. I think DSS should be somewhat held accountable for this poor child's death. Very sad, but at least she is not suffering anymore from cancer or abuse from her own family. Actually I wouldn't even call them family more like inbreds!

Click on the link and read the "relatives" entire statement! Absolutely makes me sick that this "relative" knew this little angel was only allowed out of her room for 5 minutes a day and was being beat and did NOTHING about it! Charge her with accessory to murder because she is just as guilty!

What ever happened to .. Do unto other as you'd have done unto you? I dont think the death penalty will solve anything. I think once they find Gods percious little angel and see how she met her demise, that the parents deserve to die that way also. Eye for an Eye !! No child deserves to die at the hands of an adult, especially thier own " so-called parents" .

As the father of a beautiful special needs 6 year old girl, I am heartbroken over this story. I am shocked everyday at the evil in this world. There is no pain, no deafness and no cancer in Heaven! Bless her sweet innocent heart.

Oh yes, the father deserves the DP also. She was his child and he should take responsibility for putting that "witch" in charge of her. I say give them both death and don't wait 20-30 years to carry it out! This little angel had some many obstacles in her life and then for them to abuse her! Inexcusable! Rest in Peace Zahra!

what a sad story,,,child protective services wont do anything if they dont see a problem when they come in if they were ever even notified, hoping the stepmom will confess to what she did with her so their can be some closure in this horribly tragic event. I do believe that what goes around comes around so all who are involved will eventually be punished

The Stepmom's ex-husband and another family member, I believe one of the SM's daughters DID call the child protective services and NOTHING was done.
Zarha was suppose to be home schooled. She was in the public school system before this year though.

Obama ran on helping the average citizen. They all do. I notice whenever you bring up an easy solution to unemployment like outlawing outsourcing the partisan sheep dodge the issue. USING CAPS sporadically in your text does not change your message. $1.4 trillion dollars could have given $30,000.00 to every taxpayer. That money could be used to pay off a mortgage, buy a car, or pay off personal debt. The corporate fat cats that were the beneficiaries of the stimulus could find solvency from other businesses or countries. They got a killer loan at a great low interest rate. The powerful want us all in debt so we can be slaves to them. Hillary Clinton essentially blamed high school kids who are targeted by drug dealers as the reason for Mexican violence. Our government knows where the drugs are produced yet they ignore the cartels and blame American children. Obama is a smooth talking say anything politician PERIOD. Americans know this. He doesn’t want to fix the problems because then Americans wouldn’t need him. Its munchausen syndrome politics.

What does this have to do with anything?? This is not about Obama. This is about a little girl who may possibly be dead at the hands of the people who were supposed to take care of her. I'm tired of everyone bringing Obama into everything that has nothing to do with him.

Any relatives, friends, neighbors, teachers who knew this child was treated like an animal should be charged with conspiracy to child abuse, tried, convicted and sentenced to prison. That child SUFFERED, people, long before she "disappeared". Disgusting.
