Controversial pastor gets free car for not burning Quran

The Rev. Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who caused a firestorm last month when he came close to staging a public Quran burning, is getting a new car courtesy of a New Jersey dealership.

In the run-up to the planned book-burning, Brad Benson Hyundai in New Brunswick offered Jones a vehicle if the pastor backed down on his threat.

“We heard on the news that he was going to burn the Quran," Benson Hyundai general manager David Canton told CNN on Saturday.

After condemnations from around the world, Jones called off the burning.

A representative from Jones' church, Dove World Outreach Center, called Benson Hyundai recently to see whether the offer was still good, Canton said.

It was. Jones is getting a 2011 Hyundai Accent, valued at around $13,600.

"He stood up to his end of the bargain and we’re standing up to ours,” Canton said.

A woman who answered the phone Saturday at Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, said Jones would donate the car to a Muslim charity.

  1. Wait WHAT?

I think I'm owned about 25 years worth of free cars for not burning the Quran. Who do I call about this?

A Hyundai for not burning a Koran?… So if I want a BMW should I not burn ten? This is like rewarding a 3 yr old with a toy for threatening to throw a fit in the store….

I thought this man made a really bad choice when even started this BUT it would be a lie for me not to say I am happy to see whether by "push and shove" or by "grace" he must have learned something because he is donating this car to a Muslim charity.

"Jones would donate the car to a Muslim charity." Heh, what irony.

What a fantastic message to send out to everyone in this country:

"Act like a bigoted moron, spit a ton of hateful rhetoric, and then get cold feet at the last moment and we'll give you something amazing!" Ahhh, the land of opportunity.....

Did anybody else notice that the article first said a New Jersey dealership (American) then it said New Brunswick (Canadian)?
