Defending champion Yankees on the brink of elimination

Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett reacts after giving up a three-run homer to Bengie Molina.

The defending World Series champion New York Yankees could be out of the playoffs by the time much of the country sits down to dinner Wednesday night.

They trail their best of seven series with the Texas Rangers 3-1, with game five scheduled for a little after 4 p.m. ET Wednesday on TBS.

The Rangers won game four Tuesday night 10-3. Josh Hamilton, the Rangers’ star outfielder, hit two home runs, but the turning point came in the sixth inning. With the Yankees up 3-2, the Rangers' Bengie Molina hit a go-ahead, three-run homer to give his team a lead it never relinquished.

Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci is harshly critical of the Yankees decision-making leading up to Molina’s home run.

The Yankees will send their best pitcher, CC Sabathia, to the mound Wednesday against the Rangers' CJ Wilson. If the Rangers win, they go to the World Series for the first time in franchise history, which dates to 1972.

In the National League, no team is on the verge of elimination, but the San Francisco Giants have a 2-1 lead over the heavily favored, defending champion Philadelphia Phillies.

On Tuesday, the Giants took the lead in the series with a 3-0 win. Sports Illustrated’s Joe Posnanski looks at how they’ve put themselves in a position to pull a major upset.

They play game four Wednesday night, with the first pitch just after 8 ET on Fox (except for Cablevision subscribers in the New York/New Jersey area who still don’t have the network because of a business dispute between the cable carrier and Fox owner News Corp.).

I want Chicago and I want the cubs to win 2011 and I don't want them to win. I am a Red Sox fan and got blown away in 2004 coming back against the Yankees and having a field day against St. Louis. Chemistry is a big issue in 2004 to as why the Red Sox did the impossible. When the Sox won the Series it was like the Road Runner finally died and eaten by the coyote. I don't have the passion for the game as much. Good luck to the Rangers and Giants but remember the sox came back from 3-0 so don't count your blessing yet. You are dealing with the best teams over all.

Texas has no state tax. Texas is close to Benton, AR. Texas is a number 5 market. TV deals just signed. Out of bankruptcy. Salary potential increasing. Lee can drive home when he wants to see the wifey and kids. And, after reading and hearing Yankees fans talking recently, why would he want to go somewhere and just be another guy, when he can stay in Texas, win win win, and become a legend?

When it's all said and done the Yankees will have their massive payroll and all these wins from the PAST, but nothing can change the fact that skill and good management are NOT what the Yankees are all about. The Yankees, as evidenced by the posts from their fans here, have nothing but their money to thank for their legacy. Who would want to be a fan of that? No wonder celebrities love it there. All ya gotta do to have people riding your jock is have a fat knot in your wallet.

I really hope that the Rangers can pull it out in Game 6. I have always been a Yankee hater but just the booing of A.J. Burnett in game 4 has really put it over the top for me about wanting the Yankees to lose. How the hell can you boo your team that just won the world series last season? Seriously? The Yankees have a very good team, but again I don't think their pitching is enough so hopefully we can see a Rangers-Phillies final so at least there is one interesting team.
