Japan adding subs amid tension with China

A protester in Wuhan, China, on Sunday holds up a sign which reads, "Kill all Japanese, break all relations with Japan."

Japan will add six submarines to its current fleet of 16 during the next four years as it sees increased naval activity from Asian neighbor China, according to news reports from Tokyo on Thursday.

The new vessels will give Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force its largest submarine fleet since it was established in 1976, according to a Kyodo News Service report in Japanese newspapers. Kyodo said the submarine building program was revealed by MSDF and Defense Ministry officials on condition of anonymity. It will be formalized in December for implementation during 2011 to 2015, the report said.

China maintains a fleet of about 60 submarines, according to the Kyodo report.

Tensions between Japan and China reached a recent peak in September when a Chinese fishing boat collided with a Japanese coast guard vessel near a disputed island chain in the East China Sea, known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan and the Diaoyu Islands in China. Japan detained the captain of the Chinese boat for weeks while Tokyo and Beijing engaged in a diplomatic tit for tat.

The tensions appeared to have cooled earlier this month, but Yomiuri Shimbun reported Thursday that China had recently sent three fishery patrol boats to the disputed islands.

"Going to waters off the Diaoyu Islands and protecting [Chinese] fishing activities there is part of protecting national sovereignty and the legal interests of fishermen," an official of China's Agriculture Ministry, which is in charge of supervising fishery patrol boats, said, according to the Yomiuri report.

Meanwhile in China, protesters targeted Japanese-owned factories and stores in demonstrations Saturday through Tuesday, CNN’s Kyung Lah reported. Security forces set up a protective cordon around the Japanese Embassy in Beijing.

They should just send their best Super Street Fighter 4 player over and compete to see who the real champion is. The real asian way to settle things!

I don't settling over video game dispute will be a wise decision. There will be 'MANY' factors to find fault like the chosen opponents, fighting characters, TV screen position, the property made controllers, the chosen console, and etc.

It should like the Buddist decide their fate since both countries highly respect them.

The Administration is out of touch with the American People!!!
The top priority of the American People is:
    1.JOBS,JOBS,JOBS,JOBS!!
    2. State of the economy in general.
    NOT AFGHANISTAN!
    NOT GAYS IN THE MILITARY!
    NOT HEALTH CARE INSURANCE!

IT IS JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, JOBS!

i dont understand why gays shouldnt be allowed in the army... is there any statistical evidence that they harm army effors?? have they ever done anything that majorly impeded the army? or is this just driven by what the 'stereotypical american soldier' should be like?? or maybe it is driven by the stereotypical comments i hear about GAYS in my highschool.

The reason why we don't have jobs here is because company's cannot afford to pay for employee health insurance. So we need to fix that first, to bring back jobs to this country.

Our lost jobs have gone to China. They can produce goods a lot cheaper using prisoners who dared to speak the truth...The only way we can get our jobs back is to help their people to change the government there so there are not many prisoners there any more to produce goods with no laboring cost...

You are absolutely right. Severely limit the number of jobs for H1 visa holders. Pass a law that will make it illegal for companies to hire aliens when US citizens are avalable for the same job.
