Death toll rises from Haitian cholera outbreak

A fast-moving cholera outbreak in Haiti has claimed at least 194 lives, according to a U.N. spokeswoman.

The country's health ministry is reporting another 2,364 cases from the recent outbreak, said Imogen Wall, spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

This comes after recent heavy rains caused the banks of the Artibonite River to overflow and flood the area. Dammed in 1956 to create Lac de Peligre, the Artibonite River is Haiti's dominant drainage system.

On Friday, officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Agency for International Development discussed the outbreak and efforts to work out a containment strategy.

There are little baby girls all over the world .. and little baby boys .. 7 BILLION people now and 7.9 billion are extremely needed (just barely making it). If you want to be "fiar" then you have to help ALL 7.9 billion or else you are playing favorites. Are you a racist? A facist? You are considered WEALTHY (a RICH ONE) if you have a PC and are on this board, WHO did you help in the last 24 hours? Who did you help this year? Where have you donated your TIME and MONEY and EXPERIENCE? What DIFFERENCE did you make by living this year? Or did YOU just live on some one elses charity?

This is very sad. However, if we gave Haiti a trillion dollars it would just get worse because of all the corruption there. It is time to take care of this country first if we do not we are going to be worse off than Haiti.

It is true that we (Americans) can seem callous (and ought not to) .. what brings on the indifference (whether in Haiti or in New Orleans) is decades of unwillingness to do ANYTHING to mitigate Local risks and then authoritarian obstruction of relief efforts. California has done much to retrofit buildings to limit earthquake damage. Oklahomans have tornado cellars and the great plains have invested in snow removal equipment. (they KNOW France is not going to help the U.S. - much less Haiti). We rushed to hel Haiti and they arrested the first responders. We rushed to help New Orleans and they actually sent us home (go away) while they argued politics. Well then?? The problem is not that bad. Both Haiti and New Orleans have KNOWN about risks for decades. [be aware then - you cannot GIVE a better life to most of the Islamic world NOR Africa NOR any place that does not WANT it. So do not feel compelled to "jump in" when the fur flies]

It is genocide by design. All officials know what happens when there is no clean water. All those billions in aid are now in the pockets of some extremely wealthy Americans. It was intended for there to be an outbreak of cholera. Keep away clean water and you know there will be cholera, dysentery, diarrhea and many other water-bourne disease. For Obama and the American hierarchy to pretend they don't know this is criminal.
