Gunmen attacked the United Nations compound in Herat, Afghanistan, on Saturday, a spokesman for the local provincial governor said.
"Police are involved with the armed men to clear the area. We will come with more details then," said Naqiubullah Arwin, the spokesman.
A U.N. official did not provide much detail but said the organization was aware of the incident and was trying to get more information from local officials.

JB...by sending troops to Afghanistan, we are helping ourselves. The US depends on China extending credit. China depends on oil and gas flowing thru Afghan pipelines. No troops protecting these pipelines means no credit from China wich means no social security payments to grandma. (or the millions of able- bodied individuals who take early SS instead of working like the rest of US)
Its a war zone stupid! What do you expect, a mardi gra everyday? Where is the story here? Where is the story on the war? You know, daily reports, progress, etc....
Ah once again the religion of peace spreading their love throughout the world and many Americans like this because if they didn't they would be able to see through it. Many Americans can't see through this because they have on their blinders of spiritual ignorance to not be able to see that the end-goal and agenda is to take over the world for Allah by any means necessary. This is their version and understand of love. Unfortunately many Americans obviously love this also. Look what just happened to Juan Williams. FOOLS!!!
That being the case, let China provide the security for the pipeline, that's what everyone expects the U.S. to do.Time for them to take care of their own problems.China is getting rich by giving us credit.Don't fool yorself, if they weren't making money they wouldn' be doing it.t
Almost every day or week goes by and see hear about or read about Muslims attacking and kiiling people all over the world and you never here them coming out publically condemning these acts or really joining those to fight against their agenda which is to take over the world for Allah!!! If you are not against something then you are for it. What's wrong with you Americans who won't be truthful about this? When somebody says something against it they are the ones getting chastised and fired but when these things happen, which is often it's nobody can or will say anything. America unless you wake up you are in trouble and if you be honest with yourself you this is true!!!
I wonder how "SSG" George Bush would do as a rifle squad leader there...hummmm
JB....China is getting rich because you shop at wal-mart, not because they extend US credit. This occupation of Afganistan was planned years in advance. It was timed to occur after Haliburton refurbished old Caspian Basin oil and gas wells. But the US taxpayer who funded these operations nor the Afghan people see a single penny in return. All the profits go to private individuals like the CARLYLE group....made up of men like Bush, Cheney, Major....oh, and a couple dozen binLaden family members.
Callton, you are right most Americans are afraid to say what they really think. They are afraid someone will call them out for it because it's the "poilticaly correct" thing to say. This what the liberals have done to this country,it's time for people to say what they and be bullied into silence!
Phil, and why are we shopping at Wal-mart, NAFTA and the unions, you can't have people here at home getting paid 20-30 dollars an hour to make the stuff and expect people making 15 dollars an hour to be able to buy it.
JB...you got me there.
The CARLYLE GROUP are simply a bunch of venture capitalists who buy companies load them up with debt and move on after extracting profits. Nothing more.
We should kick the damn UN out of The United States because it is worthless.
Rocketship....the Carlyle Group aquired the rights to what over a decade later would become China's oil and natural gas supplies: the rights to old soviet oilwells in the Caspian Basin. They've been busier than what you've been led to believe.
