Newspaper won't print gay marriage announcements

Greg Gould and Aurelio Tine say they just wanted to share their wedding plans.

So they went one of the largest papers in New Hampshire, where gay marriage is legal and generally accepted, to work up a wedding announcement.

But the New Hampshire Union Leader, the Manchester paper known for its conservative viewpoints, refused to print it, a decision that has sparked anger from the couple and lit up the Twittersphere and the Web.

"I was really disappointed because the Union Leader is a big voice in the state of New Hampshire, and they seem to be so out of touch," Gould told CNN affiliate WMUR-TV in Manchester.

The newspaper, however, issued a statement saying that printing the announcement would be "hypocritical" given its previous practices.

“This newspaper has never published wedding or engagement announcements from homosexual couples," Publisher Joe McQuaid said. "It would be hypocritical of us to do so, given our belief that marriage is and needs to remain a social and civil structure between men and women and our opposition to the recent state law legalizing gay marriage.”

In its full statement, printed online, the paper said firmly that it is not "anti-gay" and because of press freedoms can choose to print - or not print - whatever it wants.

Still, that move hasn't stopped the matter from becoming a controversy, with Democratic Senate candidate Paul Hodes, making it an election issue as well.

Hodes wrote a letter to the paper that read in part: "Mr. Gould and Mr. Tine will become legally married this weekend and they should have the same opportunities as everyone in New Hampshire to have their marriage publicized and recognized. The Union Leader's disgraceful policy of exclusion harkens to a different time in this country when people were denied opportunity because of their race, religion and ethnic origin."

What do you think? Should the paper give gay couples the same chance to announce their weddings? Or does freedom of the press override that, and allow the newspaper to make the decision it did? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Most of you are wrong...This country was created with the belief of one nation under GOD. Now GOD does not approve of gay marriage. Marriage is a bond between a man and a women!! It is only the sickness which is consuming this once great nation that is slowly coming to the surface. Freedom of speech does not force a business to print something that it does not agree with. By GOD if you gay members did not like something the paper printed you would be all over them for that. You are not happy with the way GOD structured this country maybe you should look elsewhere for your choice of countries to live in. This was already setup before you got here and most Christians are happy the way it is. Get the hint...join the life we live or get the hell out and quit complaining because you are the one who is messed up.

Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

If I recall my history correctly, it was during the time of McCarthyism, and history tells us what "great day for America" THAT turned out to be.

The newspaper can make whatever decision it wants to on this issue. We can also decide not to buy it. What's the big deal here?

AAAWWW the little h o m o s got mad...isn't that cute! The paper wouldn't put their immorallity and filth in the paper for all to see their stupid perversion. Good for the paper and to bad for the h o m o s! We need more media like this to do the right thing instead of promoting this sickness that the h o m o s try to create for the shock value they want out of it.

AAAWWW the little gays didn't get to print their perversion in the paper because they didn't want to promite this kind of filth...that is all the gays want to do is promote the shock value of garbage like this and think we as a society are suppose to accept them and their filth as "normal behavior" in any way they can. When they don't get their way...they get mad! LOL!

since there are laws that political ads must get fair and equal publication without being edited...couldn't some progressive politician take out an ad in that paper that talked about equal rights and in the same ad published their announcement? 🙂

I commend you, Union Leader. Your choice not to print is absolutely the right thing to do. The next thing you know, men doing sheep will want to get married and announce it.

Good grief, what is this world coming to!!!!!!!

Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

One last thought, why is it when I complain about the filth pouring out of my TV everyday, people like gayveteran want to tell me to "turn the TV off if I don't like what's on". Why is it that the gay community can't "turn the other cheek" so to speak and leave the conservatives alone. Aren't there ANY gay publications that will print your civil union announcement? You only want like minded individuals to read it and be happy for you anyway....right? Why do you insist that I am imposing my right to religion onto you, but ignore the fact that you are imposing your right to gayness onto me? How is that fair? Aren't you practicing a double standard here?

I love the current trend of people being prejudice and then saying right after "BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME A BIGOT/PREJUDICE". And then they make the irrelevant argument that they "have the right to print or not print whatever they want", that is true you do have that right but you are still a bigot.

As a lifetime resident of new hampshire, and an agnostic,I am pleased that the union leader did not change its stance. If you are gay and you want to marry a man that`s your business, however, don`t expect everyone to listen when you feel compelled to shout it from the roof tops.

The bible and the koran are both works of fiction, really not worth getting so excited about. If two men wish to sleep together, so what. It's simply none of our business, and certainly not something to consult story books about.
