Newspaper won't print gay marriage announcements

Greg Gould and Aurelio Tine say they just wanted to share their wedding plans.

So they went one of the largest papers in New Hampshire, where gay marriage is legal and generally accepted, to work up a wedding announcement.

But the New Hampshire Union Leader, the Manchester paper known for its conservative viewpoints, refused to print it, a decision that has sparked anger from the couple and lit up the Twittersphere and the Web.

"I was really disappointed because the Union Leader is a big voice in the state of New Hampshire, and they seem to be so out of touch," Gould told CNN affiliate WMUR-TV in Manchester.

The newspaper, however, issued a statement saying that printing the announcement would be "hypocritical" given its previous practices.

“This newspaper has never published wedding or engagement announcements from homosexual couples," Publisher Joe McQuaid said. "It would be hypocritical of us to do so, given our belief that marriage is and needs to remain a social and civil structure between men and women and our opposition to the recent state law legalizing gay marriage.”

In its full statement, printed online, the paper said firmly that it is not "anti-gay" and because of press freedoms can choose to print - or not print - whatever it wants.

Still, that move hasn't stopped the matter from becoming a controversy, with Democratic Senate candidate Paul Hodes, making it an election issue as well.

Hodes wrote a letter to the paper that read in part: "Mr. Gould and Mr. Tine will become legally married this weekend and they should have the same opportunities as everyone in New Hampshire to have their marriage publicized and recognized. The Union Leader's disgraceful policy of exclusion harkens to a different time in this country when people were denied opportunity because of their race, religion and ethnic origin."

What do you think? Should the paper give gay couples the same chance to announce their weddings? Or does freedom of the press override that, and allow the newspaper to make the decision it did? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

@voiceofreason...85% of US claim belief in the God of the Bible, as opposed to "just" 15% of US claiming to be sodomites. Since we are a democracy (of sorts) let US vote on this issue?

Popular vote can not be relied upon to correct every societal ill. Take the 19th Amendment, for example. Enough said.

Why doesn't anyone ever really know this? It's a REPUBLIC, not a democracy. Check out the definitions of the two. If we had a true democracy NOTHING WOULD EVER GET DONE.

Please using the word GAY to describe your unnatural act. Gay means happy and no one can be happy going against nature. Nature provides one to reproduce. Also please dont use Gods beautiful rainbow as your symbol. And please quit trying to make us accept your ways. Just because you are miserable does not mean that we should be. I pray that you find GOD before it is too late.

@Kg203...the average American adult reads and writes at the 8th grade level. While the avg. Ivy League graduate cannot pass an 8th grade final....from the year 1901. My point? Most of US are average (duh) and these are casual forums. So they should "probly" not be frequented by the anal retentive. (yes, i mean you) ps....i put probly in quotation so you wouldn't get anal again. yw

So much for "Gays" supporting free speech and the right of anyone to their own opinion. Gays will not be happy until everyone who doesnt agree with them is silenced. Gays are anti-democratic and anti-freedom!! Unless of course, that you believe what they believe, and you support what they support. But God forbid if you believe other than what they do! If you dont believe what Gays believe, you should, according to Gays, have no freedom of speech, no freedom of association and no freedom of the press!! As such, Gays are ANTI-FREEDOM!!!!

Notice I didnt mention religion, and notice I didnt mention violence or hatred!! I am for freedom!!!!! I should have the freedom to speak out against Gays if I want!!! I should have the freedom to not associate with Gays if I want. If Gays were truly happy, they wouldnt care what others think of them, or say about them!! I could care less what people say about me!! I know the truth!! Maybe Gays lives are not all that happy if they are so tied up with needing a piece of paper!!!

You have always been free to "disagree". But let's not pretend that you have something lose when gay people have access to civil marriage.

Randall, for Pete's sake, you also have the right to not use four exclamation points behind every sentence. Please exercise it. As to the content of your post, I can only assume that you felt the same way about interracial marriages in the 1960s if you were alive and old enough at that time, or would have felt so otherwise. As Mark so ably stated, the marriage of any couple has absolutely no impact on anyone outside their social circle, be they hetero, LGBT, interracial, interfaith, extraterrestrial, whatever. In other words, if gay marriage bothers you so much, the solution for your life is simple: don't marry another man. That's right! You have the freedom to marry (or not) anyone you wish who consents. That freedom will not be abridged if another enjoys it. LGBT people in loving, committed relationships cannot currently say the same. So where is their freedom?

It is good to see a decent business owner practicing morality. If my child claimed to be gay I would hope they would decide otherwise. It would be better for the world that they die than to live as a gay. I hope I do not have that issue with any of my children, but suicide is an excellent option if it occurs.

  13. know your bible

Mark? Really! You inquire of the scriptures! OK....Jesus spoke of how life would be on earth prior to his Father setting matters straight. ":Just as in the days of Noah" Jesus said of our times. And he made a short list of how people were behaving back then that included "men marrying". Prior to the flood it had never rained. So people thought Noah was crazy for building a huge ship. (the exact measurements are recorded and it was the size of Yankee Stadium and Polo grounds combined) For about 50 yrs. Noah "preached righteousness" but people just laughed and "took no note" of Noah's words. And then the rain came....So Mark? Can you see how it is like this today? See how people scoff as bible prophecy unfolds? This account is recorded in the book of Mathew, ch. 24 and several other places in the bible. I hope your eyes are opened by reading and thinking about Jesus' words. or you could just make fun of me. (smile)

Um, there is NO mention of "men marrying" in the Gospels. You must be referring to Matthew 24:38 which reads: "For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark." Jesus is talking about all of the people living in Noah's time, not just men. In the similar verse of Luke 17:27, "They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all," it's obvious that Jesus is talking about men marrying women.
