World's longest snake dies

Fluffy, at 24 feet, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's longest snake.

The world's longest snake - at 24 feet and 300 pounds - has died at a zoo in Ohio.

Fluffy, a reticulated python recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's longest snake, died Tuesday night. A necropsy found a tumor on her ovary, according to a press release from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

"She was greatly loved here by the staff, mainly because she was a gentle snake," zoo spokeswoman Carrie Pratt told CNN affiliate WBNS-TV.

Fluffy was 18 years old and had lived since 2007 at the Columbus Zoo, which had built a special habitat for her.

Reticulated pythons are nonvenomous constrictors found in tropical forests in Southeast Asia, according to the zoo's website. They are the world's longest snakes, averaging 10 to 20 feet in length. They live on small mammals like rodents but sometimes eat wild pigs, deer and primates.

World's longest snake... known. I bet there are many longer that outside of captivity.

i agree. since the environment in captivity is less than ideal, wild snakes probably get longer. their diet is more varied and has no preservatives, etc.

cindee: based on what? Plenty of captive reptiles get as large, and live as long or longer than their wild counterparts.
Been keeping snakes since I was 12 (too many years ago!) and still have my first boa...who has reached a happy 8' in length. Plenty of snakes kept by good keepers break the 25 year mark. Some (like Fluffy) don't.

FWIW, this snake was produced by Bob Clark, who sold me my first reticulated python, who is also still alive and happy.

The snakes are probably more likely to die in the wild before reaching such a length as this one did.

Worlds longest snake dead, how to make a meat head. I've had it CNN I have to find a new news source that isn't a copy of entertainment tonight. I have been loyal since the beginning because you are the only 24 hour news source that doesn't show an obvious bias toward any particular party but the hard news on CNN is getting harder and harder to find. I'll be back if you ever become a real news source again.

I totally agree. This kind of story is right up there with "Dog nurses kittens."

Please CNN. De-FOX yourself and give us some real news in the HEADLINES. Don't make us hunt it down.

What do you consider "real" news? Christine O'Donnell or Sarah Palin? I would much rather read about this snake (RIP) than some air-head politician or some crack/cocaine using celebrity.

I read a story on cnn.com about Fluffy a year or so ago. What made it interesting is the zoo had BOUGHT Fluffy. Zoo's usually care for the critters, however they are owned by a second person, or group.

We would all be much better off if you did leave, you troll. You didn't HAVE to click on this link, you didn't HAVE to comment on it and we certainly don't give a rats a$$ that you even care. So do us all a favor and stop visiting CNN if all you have are negative comments. This might not have been news to you, but to many of us...it was. So either sit down and shut your pie hole or take a hike. Idiot.

The writers are told to do a little of every thing. They like to have something other than hard hitting news to keep it light some days. Some people complain there isn't enough light stuff and way too much hard news all the time. A little bit of everything is a nice change if you ask me.

Were you molested by a snake as a small boy?

You're uneducated. Anyone that hates snakes needs to take a science class. Snakes are very beneficial, they're natures best rodent control. They get a bad rap because of silly phobias & being symbolized as evil (Satan) in the Bible. News flash: the Earth is round & its older than a couple thousand years; & snakes aren't bad.

Did you molest our snake as a small boy?

    • AwwPoorBaby

No, Yeti, they get a bad rap because they get a good wrap around peoples' pets/kids, or because they hide well in short grass and one bite from some can kill. Snakes ARE beneficial and interesting creatures, but many are instinctively deterred by their legless whiplike slithering and the knowledge of what they can do if you make a misstep. Even my cats behave differently when they've caught a snake as opposed to a lizard. As to this snake's death, it really is sad.

No. YOU are the embodiment of evil. Anyone STUPID enough to make such an idiotic comment, in my opinion, is evil. You are what we should be fighting against.....ignorance and intolerance. Moron.

What an idiot! The embodiment of evil? There are plenty of people fulfilling that role. Snakes are just doing what God made them to do–hunting and eating prey.

No, not strangle. They don't squeeze the neck and compress the upper airway. They compress the chest, tightening each time the victim exhales to make each new breath smaller. The end result, suffocation, is the same, but hugging is a better word.
