NORAD escorts aircraft to New York's JFK airport

Fighter jets escorted Emirates flight 201 to New York's JFK airport.

[Update 4:00 p.m.] Emirates Airline has issued a statement regarding the origin of the flight:

"Emirates Flight EK201, which has just landed at JFK, originated in Dubai not in Yemen, as reported in the US media. More information will follow as soon as we have it. Emirates is co-operating fully with the US authorities."

[Update 3:36 p.m.] Emirates flight 201 lands at New York's JFK airport escorted by fighter jets.

[Update 3:11 p.m.] NORAD is escorting a passenger flight from the United Arab Emirates to New York's JFK airport “out of an abundance of caution,” a NORAD spokesman said.

Two Canadian CF-18s began to track a civilian aircraft that was “determined to be an aircraft of interest” as it flew over Canadian airspace, spokesman John Cornelio said.

Two US F-15s then picked up the escort to JFK, which is ongoing.

A law enforcement source says that the flight being escorted is Emirates 201.  The flight originated in Sanaa, Yemen, yesterday and is en route from Dubai to JFK, according to Emirates Airline.

The FBI and Port Authority Police are scheduled to meet the fight, FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said.

"This is only because there is cargo from Yemen on the flight.  There is no known threat associated with this cargo or this flight,” he said.

  1. Read the story

If you read the story, you people would realize it isn't just OUR authorities reacting, the Canadians escorted it as well.

How does an escort by fighter jets keep a bomb from exploding on a plane (if that is what they suspect)?

Not too hard to figure out really. If they suspect there's a bomb on the plane and the plane begins to veer off course (towards a populated area), they shoot it down. This way, the bomb and the plane's debris don't kill anyone or destroy anything on the ground.

Read the article, it’s about a cargo plane that was being escorted to JFK. It was not about your bigoted remarks or someone whack-job dream about being chased in the bathroom. I’m not much pro-Arab, but unless you have been there…they are not dirt-dwelling towel heads. But people with a culture and belief different than ours. Before you jump down my throat about being a “camel loving American”. I served 3 combat tours as a MP in Iraq and what I did learn is that hate breeds hate. So please let keep selective breeding here at home to keep your numbers to a minimum.

Richunix, interesting name. I spent nearly 5 years in the Persian Gulf. Didn't get to Iraq, but was around the rest of the gulf.
You DO have to admit, they ARE very hospitable people too. I recall quite a few Qatari hosting our forces at their homes when they were in Qatar for R&R, to include their senior Generals.
Even AFTER we accidentally put a Patriot missile in the Minster of Defense' back yard (bad for THOSE soldiers careers).
Frankly, the only problems I had over there were traffic related.

Our media is part of the problem Rich, when referring to Arabs they freely use the word "Muslims" just as with the oil spill debacle they freely interchanged the words "gallons" and "barrels". Not all Arabs are Muslim and not all Muslims are extremist.

Unfortunately since Americans do not "see" Muslims regularly protest or march against the extremist activity undertaken by individuals/groups using their religion to further their cause they believe all Muslims support the extremist view. That's the reality of our world.

Americans, of all walks of life, have made stupidity their top priority. This mindset is evidenced everywhere, most notably in blogs and comment sections of various news agencies. We revel in generalizations, elementary school name calling and infantile behavior. It's pathetic and that's the US we live in.

So let me get this straight... If this plane had something on it, WHY LAND IT AT JFK???? Land it in some corn field somewhere......

Look at a map. You can land at JFK without ever going over a populated area. JFK is right on the Atlantic Ocean. I don't know much about corn fields, but there aren't many you can get to without first flying over a populated area. Additionally, planes aren't designed to land in corn fields. If it does, you'll likely kill all the occupants.
