Strong earthquake strikes Dominican Republic

A preliminary 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Dominican Republic early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck 155 kilometers (95 miles) southeast of the nation's capital, Santo Domingo, at about 12:35 a.m. Saturday (11:35 p.m. Friday ET).

People at resorts in the area described the earthquake as brief, and there were no reports of significant damage.

I, too, apologize to the few who do not merit the wish that the earth would open up and swallow each of you mean-mouthed, bigoted, self-important Fox.

    Dana
jerry, that was pretty incoherent, but you said something about the world being flat and I want to point out it has been the Christians and other religious people who oppose realization of things such as a spherical Earth, Earth orbiting the Sun, the science of the body and medicine, evolution, and just about every other major empirical truth that has contributed to the progress of humanity at every step of the way in human history. History shows us it's the religious people who have their heads in the sand.

Really sad to read all of these comments. Where is the compassion? An earthquake is a big deal, that no nation should have to go through. Haiti has suffered a great loss, and the pain that has been witnessed this year has been unimaginable. Let's not forget that we are all human beings, and we should care for one another.

Haiti has occupied the dominican republic for years don't forget that and we can do it again. We are still the great nation who had defeated the greatest army on earth back then (NAPOLEON'S ARMY) and abolished slavery.

Will you stop it with this whole "occupying" talk. Stop trying to occupy other countries. --- By the way, Haiti did not occupy the Dominican Republic for the sake of occupation. Haiti wanted to unite the both sides of the island as a preemptive strike to prevent Napoleon from re-enslaving Haiti. Long story short, they abolished slavery in the Dominican Republic to free ancestors descendents. They wanted freedom for all.....Wow, just like America....imagine that. Both are pioneers of freedom.

Let's not compare DR with Haiti or PR, pleaaassse, only jealous, ignorqant people could do that. Poor Haiti, the poorest and least intellignet country in the Western hemisphere. PR, if it wasn't for USA PR would be in the same boat as Haiti, another welfare state. Dominicans DO NOT DEPEND ON GOVERMENT HELP, THEY ARE SELF MOVERS.
