Hunters nabbed with slain, endangered Siberian tiger

Amur tigers, like this one at the Kiev Zoo in Ukraine, are endangered in the wild.

A rare Amur tiger – one of 300 to 400 estimated to remain in the wild - was killed by poachers near Vladivostok, Russia, an animal rescue group said Tuesday.

The Siberian tiger was found by an International Fund for Animal Welfare anti-poaching patrol in Primorye Province, according to an IFAW news release.

The group says the area (which includes parts of China and North Korea) is home to the last of the wild Amur tigers, which was on the brink of extinction in the 1940s with only 40 remaining worldwide before a vigorous conservation effort.

Four suspected poachers caught with the dead, 5-year-old male tiger were arrested by rangers from the Khasan district of the province, IFAW said. One of the hunters had been injured by the big cat and required hospitalization.

If convicted, the hunters face a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $20,000 fine, IFAW said.

"We can't save the tigers unless we combat rampant poaching, which is the single greatest threat to the survival of this species," the group’s director, Masha Vorontsova, said.

Governments of the 13 so-called tiger range countries will meet in St. Petersburg, Russia, next week to come up with a plan to save tigers from extinction. Through the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit, which begins Sunday, the governments hope to double the wild tiger population in the next dozen years.

The blackmarket for tiger products was highlighted last month when 25 suspected traffickers in tiger body parts were arrested in a six-country INTERPOL sting. More than 110 pounds of tiger bone – including the animals’  skulls and skeletons – were confiscated.

Chinese tiger-breeding centers have proposed creating tiger farms to cull the animals' body parts, thereby diminishing demand for the products and lessening the chances they might be hunted in the wild. The idea has met with resistance from environmental groups.

All sport hunting is wrong. We're supposed to hunt because we need to eat, not because it's cool to kill stuff. The complete amorality of poachers, who kill a species clinging to survival without remorse so some monocle-wearing pipe-smoker can fill his lodge with skins and mountings, is baffling. The proper sentence? Throw them on an island, unarmed, populated by packs of hunting cats. Only then will they learn what it truly means to be "endangered".

3yrs in prison? thats it?!? no wonder poaching is such a big problem...thats a slap on the wrist...killing endangered animals should be equated with animal cruelty and a much harsher punishment!

These guys are not “hunters” they are poachers. There is a huge difference. Hunting is fine if that is what you choose. CNN’s lefties are at it again labeling the bad within the good. If you disagree with hunting don’t go. Just realize it is hunter’s dollars that support wildlife more than any other organization.

Maybe . . . but ONLY for the species that hunters want to hunt. The habitat for other creatures not in the hunters hankering is not considered when "conservation" efforts are put forth. Ecosystems across places like America are fragmented or destroyed when humans want something there instead. Natural predators of hunters prey are exterminated from the area where hunters hunt. Grizzly Bears, cougars, wolves, coyote, etc, etc, etc have been systematically decimated wherever humans have decide to hunt or live.

endpcnow I cant disagree with you more... conservation is at the core of many "true" hunters. Preservation actions are at its higher than ever here in the Midwest. Bears are in no way at a shortage of food up here. The giant salmon runs can attest to that. Deer numbers, even with the ban on baiting have grown to HUGE numbers. If I were to complain about anything it would be the sheer amount of dead animals on the side of the road from lack of predators. But im not really looking for a cougar to be walking naturally around my neighborhood. You can have it

David Davidson: I understand what you're trying to say and hunters do add to conservation efforts but most if not all could care less about animals they do not hunt or the ecosystems for that matter unless they specifically support thier prey. My point is correct. Grizzy bears used to roam a huge swath of North Amercia as did cougars, wolves, etc. You just made my point. Whereever humans want to be they will exterminate anything deemed "dangerous" or insignificant irregardless of consequences. The smaller the creature the less protection. From loggerhead turtles, owls in the northwest, mountain gorrilas, black footed ferrets, Xerces blue butterfly (now extinct due to humans), etc, etc, etc. I could on and on and on. Do I need to mention Bison???? C'mon be honest. Hunters care about what they hunt and rarely care about anything else.

This is just pure disgusting........The hunters should be fed to the same tigers, so they'll know how it feels to be wiped out.

As for me I'll take animals as my freinds over humans any day......

Dont worry we humans wil lbe wiped out soon,......

A shameful thing has been done, of that there is no doubt. The outcry will be massive and the hate vibes will flow and of course it's world news. In many places a tiny unborn baby will be murdered and there will be no news.

I think Tigers are dangerous animals and should be killed or put in a zoo. The world is already a dangerous place and the Tigers in India are a menace to the innocent people who are just trying to survive!!

I absolutely agree. But, I would first rub them down with a raw steak, and maybe a sprinkle of catnip. And, I have to ask, has it not occurred to the Chinese that they could stop using tigers for their greedy profit ? This unnecessary killing of species to extinction needs to stop.

Hunting is one thing I have no problem with that, but to do that to a species who's numbers are so low is almost unforgivable. The world seems to be full of people these days who just do not have a soul.

stop blaming china.....we here in the WEST have produced medicine that has not cured but killed a lot of patients....every other day there are medicine recalls....I think we are too brainwashed about " if its made in america" than its safe........There is animal abuse here in the US as well. People killing, torturing dogs for fun..

WE have done some really sick things too. Yes we can boycott China, but prepared to pay high dollars at walmart when they (china) stop exporting goods to the USA. Our economy is down the hole and the country is losing its status a super power.....do you really think we need to boycott china..

Basically, what you need to understand is that most people suck. They don't care about the big picture only about themselves. After the human animal becomes extinct because of our actions, when the next ape stands up straight all the other animals are going to kill it immediately!!!

CUT OFF ALL TRADE WITH CHINA. They own so much of the American debt, it's not funny, they could have the run of the place! Have you ever noticed how pro-China the U.S. has been, even in the face of so many human rights violations? The American and foreign governments should create incentives to build factories and employ people in other parts of the world, where the local economy would benefit, and wherethere is no vested interest in the U.S.

Redirecting every problem in China toward the West is empty rhetoric and is not going to get you very far. Saying "We" and pretending to be some kind of self hating Westerner when you are very obviously Chinese is not going to help you either. English is an international language now, we aren't ignorant of that.

Western values are very different than those of the Chinese, and attempts to false flag the West with self hating comments can be spotted a mile away. You may as well drop the act and put on an argument if you have one with your true colors flying, because your attempts at deception will only make us despise you.

So three years and $20,000 is the going rate for extinction. I guess we could blame the Chinese but there is a head mounted to the wall of just about every European castle not to mention a rug for every rich elitist in this world.

No, there are 400 tigers, so it is 1/400th the rate for extinction.

Those poachers should feel lucky because they were not caught in China. In today's China, killing a tiger = 10+ years in prison and huge fines. 20 years ago, killing & trading tiger parts can even result in death penalties.

But the whole article is about what's happening about as geographically as far from the USA as you get. What's wrong with America is that it can't keep it's opinions, its nose, its mega-corporations and it's armed forces out of other peoples sovereign nations. We should concentrate on fixing OUR major problems that originate here. Like way high infant mortality in the world most expensive health care system, screwing up the world financial system and wars and occupations all over the place. These other countries are grown-ups. That can handle their own issues, and without Pentagon style budgets.
