Woman in Florida diagnosed with cholera

A woman who recently returned to Florida from Haiti has been diagnosed with cholera, the Florida Department of Health announced Wednesday.

"We are working with our health care partners to ensure appropriate care of this individual and prevent the spread of this disease within the community," said State Surgeon General Ana M. Viamonte Ros in a written statement.

She said Florida authorities will "continue to monitor the state for any future cases."

The news follows an announcement that the cholera outbreak in Haiti has spread across the border to the Dominican Republic.

The cholera outbreak confirmed last month in northwest Haiti has killed 1,110 people, and 18,383 people have been hospitalized with the disease, according to Haiti's health ministry.

i for one am really happy to see a return to using very basic old school diseases to incite fear and panic. this is SO much simpler to explain since viruses like swine flu seem to baffle and confuse the masses. at least this one won't cause a mass slaughter of animals for no reason. now back to your regularly scheduled disease de jour.

I said this was going to happen yesterday when people thought it could not get into the US, they better quarantee these people and anyone they come in contact quickly. My guess it is too late to do that. My families lost a lot of Irish and Scots Irish ancestors from Cholera in the mid to late 1800s that came to New York and Philadelphia. This an intestinal disease. Colon cancer runs in my family today and is genetic, I often wondered if Cholera had anything to do with affecting DNA of offspring that resulted in Colon Cancer. I hope this does not become a world epidemic.

Last time I checked, Cholera does not spread Human to Human, only by drinking infected dirty water....

Cholera is spread when raw sewage mixes with drinking water. It is not air born. In third world countries with horrible infrastructure this is not un-common. In the US it's very easy to stop because our sewage lines don't leak into our water. So stop freaking out people and get educated before posting, your crazy ranting is part of the problem.

Reality's post is right on target. If you are getting your drinking water from septic run-off, or washing in cesspools, you really have very little to worry back it is! back to your favorite chair and watch the TeVo rerun of that aweful dancer, Ms. Palin, who surprisingly, is actually still on YOUR FAVORITE SHOW.

    Septic sludge anyone?

What is the USA's ability to treat cholera? If we had a widespread epidemic would we be able to deal with it?

shut up! Everyone over exaggerates about stuff. Reason why cholera is a pandemia in haiti is cuz they dont have a clean habitat. Look at their country after the earthquake or even before. Diseases are likely there and will spread quickly. They dont have the medical personnel or clean hygiene. Here we do.

Come on, people. Before you start wildly speculating that cholera will "eventually spread" to the U.S. or become pandemic, or before you start being concerned for the others on the plane with the woman, you should get the facts on what cholera is and how it is transmitted. And then you will feel very very stupid.

You people aren't too bright are you? They say in the report that she was in Haiti, which is where she contracted it. Cholera is intestinal and transmitted through untreated water supplies; so unless this lady takes a dump in a well that your community drinks untreated water from, what pandemic are you exactly worried about? Seriously, it's you people that freak out, not the media.

No surprise at all half. It keeps going thru my mind how so many people blogged thier heartless approval of the haitian cholera outbreak saying they deserved it because of theyre religion or theyre stupid. see what happens when people choose hate and negativity instead of compassion. and those rioting in haiti should wise up and stop complicating the situation so they can get the aid being offered.

since when is 22% of your taxed income the same as nearly half of your income? Hey parrot? I cant believe how so many of my fellow americans make such ignorant comments, this isn't your personal soapbox to complain or make fun of others, what if you were the one coming home with cholera?, pretty sure you'd hesitate to take shots at your own country.

This is great. Central America and Mexico will get infected with the virus, they will all head to the US for the Obama care and everyone will be saved. Planes will not be able to take off from America because they will not be welcome in Europe, Asia, Austrailia, or Africa. We will have to bring our military home to patrol the borders and boarders for that matter. I am not laughing about the 2012 prophecies at this point.

Yeah, because Obama care is nationalized healthcare..... Not. The 2012 prohpecy will come true when this massively stupid electorate elects Sarah Palin for president.

Go listen so some more rush limbaugh vitriol and cry about non-logical talking points. Maybe Alex jones is more fitting with those conspiracy theories you are spouting.
