DEA outlaws chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana

The DEA has taken emergency action to outlaw chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana, meaning it will be illegal to possess or sell them in the U.S. for at least one year, until further action is taken.

The chemicals used to make "fake pot" products, also known as K2, will be studied by the Department of Health and Human Services to determine whether the chemicals and the products should be permanently controlled, the DEA said.

"Over the past year, smokable herbal blends marketed as being 'legal' and providing a marijuana-like high, have become increasingly popular, particularly among teens and young adults," the DEA said in a statement."These products consist of plant material that has been coated with research chemicals that mimic THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and are sold at a variety of retail outlets, in head shops and over the Internet.  These chemicals, however, have not been approved by the FDA for human consumption, and there is no oversight of the manufacturing process."

Tylenol kills more people than any other drug. But it makes money comparable to coke and cigs so its ok. That k2 stuff is nasty and should not be smoked anyway. Say yes to Pot and no to potpourri

Only people dying from tylenol are those druggies abusing pain killers containing the drug. It kills the liver when large quanities are consumed. Alcohol does the same thing with abusive consumption. They usu have that sickly yellow tinge look in their skin tone and eyes.

@Mmmmmm, you are wrong on the Tylenol issue. Tylenol is highly toxic, the difference between normal dose and death is something like 8 pills in 24 hours. Additionally, if you take it before/during drinking alcohol or in the morning if you have alcohol in your system still (for those who abuse alcohol), it causes an extremely toxic chemical which can cause liver failure in relatively short order.

the real other issue is that alcohol is responsible for more deaths than heroine, crack, cocaine and speed each year combined.

Here's part of the problem with our society. Here you have a nice little plant with the potential of being able to naturally increase the active ingredient. Now I highly admire people who can make something new, better, easier or whatever, but this is just some greedy slob wanting to capitalize on his/her "discovery". Why take a natural substance and try to chemically imitate it? To me it would only to make it more potent therfore more appealing to the masses. Personally the natural taste, look smell, etc are appealling. Kinda like that Four Loco drink. They could have made something less potent. I don't understand ruining good beer with caffine anyway but many people didn't understand what kids were doing in my time either. It's just getting more dangerous because some people care about the almighty dollar more than their fellow man.

it wasn't created to mimic the effect of THC, just the chemical structure. I mean 2 + 2 = 4 so I'm sure they knew it would have similar effects, but it wasn't created for that reason. In fact, the person who created it is one of the biggest supporters of the ban because nobody actually knows whether or not it's safe.

The real thing, on the other hand, has been around longer than us and extensively studied. It's not 100% but then again neither is table salt or sugar. Moderation and responsible use is key, though those who would like to impose their morals would tell you that no use is okay. Personally, I think that should be up to the individual. If they start causing problems, treat them like you would anyone else.

This synthetic marijuana SHOULD be illegal. For God's sake, what your smoking is ACETONE you idiots. Just recently a K2 manufacturer in my town was shut down because agents personally witnessed employees spraying the "potpourri" with acetone. Sorry, but I'll risk getting a ticket for the real stuff any day over smoking
potpourri sprayed with acetone. It's not synthetic marijuana. It's tobacco sprayed with chemicals.

No, no, that didn't happen. Liar. K2 is produced by 1 company, there aren't multiple "manufacturers" in each town, and Acetone is not a cannaboid. Tool.

Mmmm: aged in dung??? have you ever even SEEN marijuana? I can assure you, it isn't washed Furthermore, ahy would it be productive to age a substance with a naturally occuring chemical?
Or maybe you're talking about this new thing, it's called FARMING, and they use dung to fertilize EVERYPLANT FOOD SOURCE you eat. Unless of course they use chemicals that mimic the dung. Which takes us right back to the use of synthetic chemicals to enhance a product in some way, like in K2.

Bill – You got it. If the mid-term elections told us anything, it's that freedom is most important. The Liberal-tarian Tea Baggers are in vogue now. Down with the gubberment and its excessive taxation and control of my life – at least until I need my own Medicare-funded hip replacement. Get stoned, poison the air, steal from the poor, have a tea party, it's all cool. In reality, the Tea Baggers and Company are the last to support legalizing pot. And, yes, supporting "less government" and opposing the legalization of pot is complete hypocrisy.

You're an idiot.. If your comment is true.. then why is it that the Republicans are the ones who will fight to keep pot illegal? 71% of Republicans are against it compared to 59% of Democrats.

      Nice try though..

Not that I agree or support the DEA but any drug that causes like or similar effects as pot will be outlawed eventually. The whole reason behind the law against thc is because of the effects it causes on the human body. I do not personally indulge in it, but I see no different between that and alchohol. It is legal for someone to go out and get blathering drunk, but they cant become inebriated from another substance? Pot and the kettle if you ask me. If they are going to outlaw one, they should outlaw all of them, including alchohol.

I know, the lengths people will go to NOT break the law...

The government should see this as people wanting to not break the law and also wanting to get high. Create an ideal solution, legalize and regulate for adults!

Outrageous, without any legislation passed by congress we have the DEA banning chemicals with some phoney nonsense about whether they're approved for human consumption by the FDA. We truly are a land without laws now, just unaccountable agencies imposing their whims.
