DEA outlaws chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana

The DEA has taken emergency action to outlaw chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana, meaning it will be illegal to possess or sell them in the U.S. for at least one year, until further action is taken.

The chemicals used to make "fake pot" products, also known as K2, will be studied by the Department of Health and Human Services to determine whether the chemicals and the products should be permanently controlled, the DEA said.

"Over the past year, smokable herbal blends marketed as being 'legal' and providing a marijuana-like high, have become increasingly popular, particularly among teens and young adults," the DEA said in a statement."These products consist of plant material that has been coated with research chemicals that mimic THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and are sold at a variety of retail outlets, in head shops and over the Internet.  These chemicals, however, have not been approved by the FDA for human consumption, and there is no oversight of the manufacturing process."

Wow..... Do you all hear yourselves? Plain truth.... Pharmaceuticals kill MILLIONS of people worldwide every year. All of them FDA Approved... Top 10 Pharm drugs cause 100's of deaths each every year not to mention permanent conditions worse than what they are taken for... Cigarettes kill MILLIONS of people every year, still legal. Alcohol kills MILLIONS of people every year, including those who do not even use it! Alcohol injures almost as many people who were not drunk by the people that were. Crime associated with Alcohol is staggering. The only reason people are smoking this stuff is because Marijuana is illegal. Marijuana has NEVER killed anyone in all recorded history.... Let's hear that again... NEVER killed one person in all recorded history. Does not cause negative side affects, and is the moist versatile plant on the planet. Makes the strongest fibers, the best paper, the best oils, hell over 10,000 products that can be produced using cannabis. All of them superior to their synthetic counterparts. Hence the ban. There is no money in a plant, you can not patent it...Same with medicine. Cannabis was the most used and prescribed medicine until the ban. It was the base for over 80% of all medicines. Again you can't patent a plant, so Pharmaceuticals would be out of business if everyone could grow their own medicine.. Before any of you argue with me do your research, be informed before you comment in public forums so everyone can see you are just a preacher of propaganda fed to you by the government and that you have no thoughts of your own on this matter..

unfortunately people are too lazy and apathetic to do their own homework – they would rather believe the hype and propaganda spewed to us by the Govt. The 'drug War" is a jobs program and employees -tens of thousands – they can't make drugs legal. too many people would be out of work – too many prisons would shut down. Do you know that the Prison Guard union is the largest union in CA – did you know that MJ is the largest Cash Crop in CA – did you know that 75% of all gang money comes from the sale of illegal narcotics. You probably do – just wanted to say it anyway – the drug war is an FNG joke. Prhibition is the definition of Failed Policy.

Thanks for that! I could not have said it better myself! You are a very informed citizen for sure! ;) What we do with our own bodies should be our own business! And yes, it is all about money! Everyone that smokes weed should go to the White House on the same day with $40, (enough for a $40 sack of weed.)..we could probably buy pots legalization if we all ban together!

I like how this post has no comments because it's so poignant. To be frank I don't have an issue with making synthetic weed illegal simply because the chemicals in that stuff must be bad for you (worse than weed at least). However I think the only true way to resolve the legalization of marijuana issue is to have a standard set of laws. I mean let's be honest here people, alcohol is just as bad, if not worse, than marijuana. So if your going to make one illegal for it's effects on the human body and one's decision making process, shouldn't the other also be illegal. I mean simple logic would dictate so wouldn't it? There seems to be a double standard going on here in regards to this nations judicial system. But then again we saw how well prohibition worked in the 20's so I guess that options out.
      Anyway that's my opinion.

Oh and here we go again…more draconian laws that cease to address the real social problem of substance abuse in the first place. A otherwise normally law abiding citizen gets caught with a little hooch in his/her possession im my state for example, first time ever, will get you a minimum of 30 days in jail and a 500 dollar fine. Cha-ching. Ok so thats nothing new, state governments role is to be a vampire on the people who actually go to work and pay their bills. But 30 days in jail minimum? So someone screws up once and they now probably have lost their job, home, spouse, have a permanent criminal record, all over a plant, that grows naturally in the wild. That sounds fair and compassionate. Home of the free right? But ok enough of that tangent. We move on to this fake pot Synthetic cannabis. These clever chemists found a loop hole for a hungry market that could be regulated and taxed by our failed government. Another plant. So now you want to ban this product which is only available to be purchase by you guessed it…adults in the first place. But hey adults can't decide whether smoking a plant or drinking a caffeinated beverage is right for them. We need the FDA to show us the way. Well lets say this stuff makes it's way to little Jimmy after he pays the dude on the corner to buy it for him. Would you rather your troubled child who is going to get high one way or another to be high on plant parts or be huffing Glade and burning out his brain permanently. Either way that said child is going to find a way to get high. But then again its not about helping the person its about getting them into the prison system. America's real cash crop.

This is a crime against our country, these fiends from the DEA should be imprisoned or at the very least fired and barred from any government job.

Very bad headline by CNN. It should have read "DEA finds synthetic pot chemical to be in violation of federal law." The DEA is responsible for executing the law, not legislating it, of course. I think we all can see that the folks at CNN love to run headlines this way to stir up controversy.

are mushrooms you eat not cultivated the same way mmmm? and you shout sober up and drink a cup a coffee when caffeine is a more addictive drug than marijuana. Your views on this subject are skewed and bias, you bring up some points that fit your view and completely disregard others that dont, you fail to bring up a counter point valid enough for conversation and instead turn to belittling whoever doesnt agree with you, its embarrassing and rude. if you are just going to troll this page do so with the intent of having an intelligent conversation

Or you could do like me and millions of other Americans and get up early and get to work on time (sober) and then after a long day of working and doing chores around the house when I get home, smoke a bowl and sit down to a nice meal. I think after the 8hr work day, exercise, chores, making dinner, etc, I can spend 30 mins sitting on the couch.

If it makes you feel good, the control-freaks in the Government will ban it. With or without any evidence that it is harmful. And really, is it not a person's right to decide what to put in his own body? Who owns your body...you or the State?

Let's be clear about one thing: This synthetic smoking material designed to get the user high is not synthetic marijuana. Marijuana has been successfully synthesized and is marketed under the prescription name Marinol.
