World Cup hosts announced: Russia in 2018, Qatar in 2022

[Updated at 10:42 a.m.] FIFA's World Cup will be held in Qatar in 2022, the governing body said in a press conference Thursday.

The tiny, wealthy Middle Eastern nation beat out the United States, Japan, South Korea and Australia to host what will be the largest sporting
event in the world in 2022.  Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, the son of Qatar's emir and head of the emirate's bid team, said he was looking forward to the first time a Middle Eastern nation hosts the event.

"Thank you for believing in change, for expanding the game and for giving Qatar a chance. You will be proud of us – and you will be proud of the Middle East. I promise you this," he said.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter confirmed that the ruling body's desire to grow the sport around the world played a big part in the committee's thinking.

"I have to say thanks to to the executive committee because for 2018 and 2022 we go to new lands, because the FIFA World Cup has never been in eastern Europe or the Middle East. So, I'm a happy president when we speak of the development of football," he said.

[Posted at 10:37 a.m.] The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held in Russia, the sport's governing body announced Thursday.

The Russian government has pledged billions of dollars to build new stadiums and infrastructure. A tournament in Russia would also open a huge, relatively untapped market for FIFA, which has awarded World Cups to South Africa in 2010 and Japan and South Korea in 2002 for similar reasons.

Russia beat out England and joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands to host what will be the largest sporting event in the
world in 2018. It will be the first time the contest has been held in eastern Europe.

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin decided against attending the ceremony in Zurich, but his deputy Igor Shuvalov was present to accept the
first successful bid from Eastern Europe.

"You have entrusted us with the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I can promise that you will never regret it. Let us make history together," he told the
assembled delegates.

We all are happy to host World Cup in 2018 in Russia!! All the country was celebrating this wonderful news the whole night, people were congratulating each other everywhere and men with Russian flags were walking on the streets, so happy! Great challenge for us! and as it was mentioned- none of the countries from Eastern Europe ever hosted the World Cup.. so we hope that the forthcoming events such as Sochi Olympic Games 2012, Formula-1 Racing from 2014 and World Cup 2018 will open a new page in the history of Russia. :)

as long as Americans look down at other nations, they wont host such events, the other 95% of the world wont vote for America... and No they don't hate America, they just think that Americans are arrogant, so America needs to prove otherwise if they want to earn their votes.

I'm happy for Qatar. Come on fellow Americans, it's WORLD CUP not AMERICA CUP. If you believe in democracy then you should accept that Qatar won by the majority of votes. Qatar worked the hardest & paid the most to win this. For all of you jealous stereotype Americans & haters, I hope you don't live to see world cup 2022. The last thing we need are ignorant racists, who cannot accept defeat. Haters, you have 12 years to bang your heads to walls & talk unheard.

OMG! Why are some people so ignorant?! Qatar is NOT a terrorist country, its very peaceful and amazing! i have been to the majority of Middle Eastern countries, and some of them dont even amount to Qatar! my dad lives in Qatar, and we live in Iowa, but every time we go to see him, I am absolutely AMAZED! people there can whatever they want, mostly, and i havent seen that much women wearing burqas, compared to other countries. There are sooo many amazing views and places to visit if you ever get a chance to go there, and you'll see how many people work and live together in peace! and as for the heat, in case you havent read other articles, or part of this article, they're building air conditioning in the stadiums to help cool everyone down. P.s. this is all from a 13 year old, which is sad to see that a teenager like me isnt as ignorant and stupid as some of the commenters here. :/ Congrats to Qatar and Russia!!!

I rooted for Russia to get the 2018 one, and for Australia to get 2022. In short I am ecstatic with one and shocked with the other choice. I will definitely go to the Russia 2018 one with my friends, and pass on Qatar's. But good luck to both nations anyway with hosting.
