Police who are investigating a major wildfire in Israel have detained a 14-year-old boy who admitted smoking a water pipe in the woods near his village, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
The boy said he panicked and ran to school after the fire started. Two other teenagers who had been detained Monday have been released, Rosenfeld said.
The fire, which broke out Thursday, killed at least 41 people and forced the evacuations of about 17,000 people and scorched over 10,000 acres around Haifa, Israel's third largest city, before it was doused.
Most of the 41 victims were cadets in Israel's prison service who arrived Thursday to help evacuate 500 inmates from the Damon prison near Haifa.
The fire had also threatened businesses, tourism and one of Israel's greenest regions, Mount Carmel.

Water pipe??? You mean smoking weed, crack as in bong...you mean bonging...illicit drug use brought the whole forest down...meaning drug problem in Israeli youth. This fourteen year old needs some old fashion rehab butt whipping.
Water pipe is not the same as a bong. Water pipes are very common in the Middle East. They put tobacco in them and burn with a hot coal. You can find them in the States in Middle East hangouts. I’ve seen a lot Americans who smoke it and they are not Middle Eastern either. You can have marijuana in a water pipe but chances are it was just tobacco. I’m not saying that I endorse smoking a water pipe. Smoking one is still bad for your health.
@Pete, Sorry, that story don't jel or jive...just buy a cigarette and light. No one runs from a cigarette...but weed...plenty people run when getting caught with weed or drug use...I'm sticking with the weed factor! He could have called the fire dept anonymously, oh I start a fire while smoking tobacco...but he didn't...running indicate illicit behavior...smells like stinking weed to me!

That blows. You people shouldn't be so quick to judge ... Mt Carmel needed a good cleansing ... too bad individuals have to take the blame for building events that will blow sooner or later.

The israeli police should do a drug screen panel before letting this child go. Weed stays in the body a very long time...this child may need rehab...and a butt whipping...
What about this boy's parents? When kids act out like this, generally there are problems at home. Parent's are responsible for their children, aren't they?
Shisha...hookah... etc. is very common in the Middle East. It is usually flavored tobacco, and has nothing to do with marijuana. Most cities in the States these days have a hookah bar.
So it's ok for a 14 year old to go to a hook er...I mean hookah bar? Is that the same flavored tobacco sprayed with drugs and chemical to solicit a buzz and high. The boy really does need a "buttah" whipping!
Those flavored tobacco is equivalent to huffing will kill many brain cells...some are laced with cannabinoids.

Forest fire is always a tragedy but it is amusing that Israel would not name the boys. If they were Palestinians it would have been labeled an act of terrorism. There is a fire now in the mounatins of Beirut and I do not hear any cries about it. I guess it does not matter when a tragedy inflicts our cousins.

Hardly. Terrorism is not about WHO did it but about WHY he or she did it. Terrorism is DELIBERATE attacking of non-combatants with political goals.

Geez. Trouble making young ones all over the planet. What can they do to this stupid jerk kid? Maybe make him work day and night replanting and building and cleaning and speaking to others to not be so stupid and callous. What a damn shame.
Even if the kid didn't do it on purpose, his parents should be held accountable. The city of Los Angeles started making parents clean-up their kid's dimented "artwork" from public structures to help solve the problem. The little brats weren't going to clean it up. If this 14 yr. old's parents can't afford to pay for the damages, they can work it off doing public service.

No Mmmmm. A water pipe is a very common thing in the ME. I'm not a smoker but it is different from a cigarrete although still dangerous to one's health. People in the ME use it as a social activity like some do with smoking a cigar on social occasions or having a glass of bourbon as recreation. It doesn't mean you are getting high. Americans would just get a cigarette but for Middle Easterners this is what they do if they want to hang out.
