Senate passes controversial $858 billion tax cut package

The Senate approved a controversial $858 billion tax cut package Wednesday, overwhelmingly voting to extend the Bush-era tax reductions despite a series of objections from both the left and the right.

The measure, which passed 81 to 19, now advances to the House of Representatives.

Among other things, the package includes a two-year extension of the Bush-era tax cuts set to expire December 31. It also would extend unemployment benefits for 13 months, cut the payroll tax by 2 percentage points for a year, restore the estate tax at a lower level, and continue a series of other tax breaks.

The estate tax - currently scheduled to exempt inheritances up to $1 million and tax amounts above that at a rate of 55% - would be reduced under the tax package to a rate of 35% on amounts above a $5 million individual exemption.

Really? Is this some sort of joke, only 19 senators had the courage to stand up to this atrocious waste! God, I can only hope for a miracle in the house.

This what you get when you vote in the Rep. Their goals is to support the rich people not the middle class or poor.

I get it that something has to be done to protect the middle class and I also get that the Dems will have to hold their noses and vote yes. What I don't get is if they are givig the Wealthy, Stinking Rich Upper 2% a 2 year reprieve, why not give the unemployed 2 years instead of 13 months, AND what about the 99ers? Does anyone care about the American people who have lost everything through no fault of their own? This tax break will do nothing for job creation or the economy, unfortunately it is going to be 2 more years before you can do anything about it. Americans, stand up for your country and support your President, he's the only hope you have. With any luck he has a master plan we don't know about yet. God bless America,

Why do we call this a Tax Cut....Taxes are what they are...if you raise them, it is an increase,....if you lower them it is a cut....automatic increase, is still raising taxes, not giving a tax cut by not raising. Speak clear English to the People and stop with the BS. This country is spending too much money and when I make $60,000, with about 45% of it going to Federal/State/County and Sales Tax...I say enough. Regardless of which party is running the show, STOP SPENDING and make people responsible for themselves!!

  14. really?

Noooooooooo. I want the darn thing to fail. Why should the rich get more money and we have to add $900 billion of dollars to the deficit? And why are the tea drinkers so quiet all of the sudden?

"why should the rich have to pay more of a % on what they have" Because they benefit from our country's infrastructure exponentially. Capitalism will, by it's nature, contain haves and have-nots. Those who benefit from capitalism most must pay to support it. If your benefits of that system are exponentially greater than average, you must be taxed exponentially. Cry about the supporting the poor if you want, but if you can't understand that capitalism creates poverty as well as wealth you are ignorant.
