It's a girl: Queen Elizabeth announces first great-grandchild

The British monarchy has welcomed a royal bundle of joy, Buckingham Palace said in a press release Thursday.

Autumn Phillips, wife of Peter Phillips, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, gave birth to a girl on Wednesday at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, according to the statement.

The baby, whose name will be announced at a later date, is the queen's first great-grandchild. She weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces.

Peter Phillips, the baby's father, was present at the birth, the palace said.

Phillips, 33, is the son of Princess Anne, the second child and only daughter of the queen. He married the Canadian-born Autumn Kelly in May 2008.

Peter and his younger sister have no royal titles and perform no royal duties. They are the cousins of Princes William and Harry, the second and third in line to the throne, respectively.

The new baby is 12th in line to the throne.

Well, yes, of course the Queen has a daughter. I recall that both Charles and Ann, then cute little kids, had a part in the coronation ceremony, though, as I was not much older myself, I don't remember what they did. I didn't understand the concept of, "All hail Elizabeth!" and I heard it wrong, but "O. K., Elizabeth!" sounded like assent to me. In later years, it made sense that the English, always fond of pets, kept the Royals as especially esteemed ones, so that they could unceremoniously kick their elected leaders in the slats whenever they felt like it without any international loss of face. But in recent years, they have treated them worse than cheap goldfish, even harrying one to her death. Maybe it's time to retire the Royals, then, pensioning off the grown ones comfortably and teaching the young ones to earn their way in the world like the rest of us.

God Save King George! Who are these english nuts? Are they playing dress up? Or is it, like, a play? Kings and queens, etc.? Like a Shakespearo? So straaaange. Sounds like something from The Princess Bride or the Neverending Story. Is it 1592 in england? You can't be a king or queen any more. Our Royal family is tresured by the vast majority in England... And long may it be that way, what we do & don't do is no concern for some half bred yank... A country that believes history & tradition started with Michael Jackson should not try and lecture the nation that brought civilized democracy, industrial revolution etc etc etc.... Do I need to go on?!?!

And before some big time charlie yankie internet warrior decides to threaten me over the net... I'm in Gravesend, Kent... The town which has your one and only royal (Princess Pochahontas) buried in a churchyard not far from where i live on the riverside... Come find me & get backhandered back to the airport...

God save the Queen & long live the English nation!

Proud English is just mad because we kicked the greedy Brits out before they could lay claim to our dentistry techniques too. Oh, and we're happy to have provided you with that industrial revolution you're so proud of. Halfbreeds? I love it when an ugly mutt runs around acting like he's better than someone who takes great pride in their diversity. I'd almost forgotten that the english were a pure master race.

@Proud English I agree with you completely. americans feel that they have the right to tell the world what to do concerning virtually any topic but then seem amazed when they discover that they are almost universally hated. It is no wonder that they sit 18th on the UN literacy list. All the best to family and child.

Hey balls, Contact me when you've got an education, after all I can't trust the education system of the US what so ever.

Please remember that what you think is controlled by your media, so shut your greasy mouth untill what you say can actually be called valid.

Have a wanderful New Year! (to all the other Americans who lack ignorance and arogance)

@Jaques and Richard... I completely agree with you and I am from the US. In general, people here are arrogant and it seems like every time they open their mouths they just confirm this even more. I think a lot of Americans forget that we wouldn't be where we are today if not for the British and the royals. People today don't have an appreciation for history, only the here and the now. So from an American who was home schooled to the country that helped to colonize us, thank you and God bless the queen, her family and this new baby girl.

Ooo, Proud English is rather testy. Well, since we are "cousins" of a sort, you are right that the British Monarchy is treasured. I am a royal watcher and enjoy the antics of the monarchy trying to get by in the 21st century. I wouldn't want to try being that scrutinized. On the other hand, the British people are just as much a mongrel in the world dog pound as the rest of us. Lets see, Celt, Saxon, Germanic, Norman, Roman. How many other genetic invaders do you have in that mix? As far as civilization, I think the ancient Chinese and the ancient Greeks were way more civilized than you guys were!
