Witness: Michael Jackson's doctor seemed not to know CPR

Dr. Conrad Murray seemed not to know how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation as he waited for paramedics to arrive at Michael Jackson's house, a witness at Murray's preliminary hearing testified Tuesday.

Former Jackson security chief Faheem Muhammed said he and and guard Alberto Alvarez saw Murray crouched next to Jackson's bed "in a panicked state asking, 'Does anyone know CPR?'"

"I looked at Alberto because we knew Dr. Murray was a heart surgeon, so we were shocked," Muhammed said.

When defense lawyer Ed Chernoff asked if perhaps Murray was only asking for help because he was tired, Muhammed said "The way that he asked it is as if he didn't know CPR."

As one who used to teach CPR , BLS & ACLS to Dr's they are the worse at doing CPR, it's true many don't know the right way to do it. They consider it beneath them to do it.

thank you! that was what i was going to write. as a health care worker for 16 years with people and 5 years with animals, both people drs and veterinarians act as if cpr is for aides to do and they do not even bother. a teen is more likely to save your life via cpr than the worlds most skilled heart surgeon. that is a fact!

Well, If you teach so much ACLS, PALS, NALS, etc you must know that actually the best way to perform CPR is when you have a team with a leader who will observe and lead the team while CPR is performed. That is usually the role of the MD since of all the people in the room he went to college for 4 years, med school for 4 more years and residency for at least 3 years. Guess who you will trust your life? Otherwise do not page docs when you have a code and resusitate the patient by yourself including giving the epi, norepi, dopa and other drugs. In the setting of one person providing CPR it is game over once that person is tire. As a physician I do not point anybody in particular as a bad CPR provider because as I have seen in the stress of a code you can do a bad job and it does not apply to MDs, it also apply to RNs, RTs, EMR and the list goes on. That is why CPR most be practiced very often including mock codes.

The 911 operator could have walked him through the CPR procedure. And Mark Hill is right, most drs don't practice CPR because they have nurses & assistants do it for them. However, I think Dr Murray should have taken a class on CPR before accepting the position as MJ's personal dr & the people who hired him should have made sure he knew what to do in an emergency situations.

Hello fellow Mark. I used to be a counselor for developmentaly disabled people, and CPR is definitely an important thing to know how to preform. And I didn't know that doctors outside my field were like that as well. I've had clients die because of poorly administered, or untimely CPR. What I don't understand, and maybe you can help with this, why are they changing 9"% to only include the chest compressions? Are we just supposed to break the persons ribs until EMTs arrive? And was there a school of thought that disapproved of the breaths before recently?

i watched a study on this, they have found that in the time you stop to do the mouth resp's, that the blood not pumping throughout the body is more devistating than skipping the breath. as you probably know, hgb carries the o2 throughout, you need to keep pumping the heart to keep the o2 circulating to every body tissue, but mainly the brain. when you stop, the o2 connected to each hgb cell dies immediately as the heart stops. if you keep pumping, you R delivering the o2 so you cover more o2 saturation throughout the body by compressions only instead of start, stop.. go breathe, stop, go pump, stop, go breathe... you loose too much time going back and forth, just pumping the heart keeps the hgb and o2 combo alive in the body.

Why is there a crisis in health care? Can you guess? I trained for bedside nursing at one of the best military hospitals and this is no surprise at all!

Dr Murray is not a cardiac surgeon- He is a pen-pushing cardiologist. The kind who writes prescriptions and a bad one at that. Someone should check his credentials. Looks like a reject. No self respecting cardiologist will chuck up his job to be a hangers-on to a singer. He is definitely a below-par cardiologist- one who has clinics everywhere so no one really knows his competence and record.

Cardiac surgeons are a different kettle of fish. A cardiac surgeon would have opened Michael 's chest with a bread knife and given internal cardiac massage- which is far more effective that external massage.

Michael's problem was that he was not breathing due to too much Propofol and other drugs in his system. What he really needed first was ventilation with an Ambu bag and the heart would have started spontaneously because both his lungs and the heart was normal in the first place.( His brain of course was never normal)

    To add to above comment:
Cardiac Surgeosn are far more knowledgeable( and intelligent ) enough NOT to do something idiotic like giving an IV infusion of Porpofol( it has to be given IV) to someone like Maichael Jackson and inside a private home!

Cardiac arrests are of two types- Primary due to some pathology in the heart- as in the case of a heart attack( MI) or secondary as in drowning, drugs overdose or strangulation where the heart stops because of lack of oxygen to the brain. In the latter, the heart usually starts on its own when respiration is restored. When a person is recovered from drowning the first thing to do is to restore ventilation and then cardiac massage. In early drowning or strangulation the heart is usually beating, albeit very ineffectively or slowly( or fibrillating).

CPR is of three levels (1) Basic- what everyone should know ( 2) Intermediate- what is done by paramedics on the spot and ( 3) advanced- what doctors do in hospital- tracheal intubation, Central venous cannulation, Partial cardiac support using IABP, ECHMO, Bypass, etc

Since most doctors generally are practicing advanced cardiac support –and Basic and intermediate are done by paramedics- the can get a bit rusty in CPR( but no excuse not to know )
