As his beloved Tigers get ready for the BCS National Championship game Monday, Robert Gibbs wants to bring an Auburn University tradition to the White House.
Gibbs, the soon-to-be ex-White House press secretary, told CBS college football guru Tony Barnhart that if Auburn wins, he will return to “roll” or “TP” the White House, or at least part of it. The “The Tony Barnhart Show” is scheduled to air Thursday night.
According to Politico, Gibbs said, “If Auburn wins, I will come back. I will get a little agreement with the Secret Service. We’ll put a couple of rolls (of toilet paper) up there, and then I can help take it down so it doesn’t look like we trashed the place.”
Some of you might be thinking, What the …??
Being an Auburn grad, I know a little about this tradition. After Auburn wins a football game or other significant sporting event, fans flock to the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue.
It’s known as Toomer’s Corner, after the drugstore that produces the lemonade that Esquire magazine once suggested was made by God himself.
Fans mob the intersection after a victory, often forcing police to simply shut down two major arteries through downtown.
There, we hurl roll after roll of toilet paper into the live oaks across from the drugstore. After a big win, everything on the corner is covered in the white stuff, even the power lines and eagle-adorned brick entryways to the university.
It can get rather messy, as you can see here.
Gibbs attended North Carolina State University, where he played goalkeeper for the Wolfpack soccer team, but he was born and raised in the city of Auburn.
Gibbs told Barnhart that he thinks President Obama understands how important Monday’s game between Auburn and the Oregon Ducks is to him, Politico reported. Gibbs further said he’s worn the same Auburn shirt for every Tiger victory this year, even when everyone else was wearing a suit.
“He gets how big a deal this is for me. He enjoys and loves college football,” Gibbs told Barnhart. “I’ve watched some of their games in my office. I’ve got a pretty decent-size TV in there, thankfully. Sometimes it’s hard. One week we were on the road, and I had to talk to the advance people about making sure that we had some TVs and could watch some games if we needed to.”
War Eagle, Mr. Gibbs. See you in Glendale.

“This Just In” is CNN's news blog. We'll bring you the latest news from CNN’s correspondents and sources around the world. We’ll cover stories that are breaking, causing ripples, or otherwise driving the collective daily conversation, along with some items we find interesting and worth sharing.

Cam Newton will be having Duck for dinner on Monday.
Seriously people. Do any of you who see a problem with this argument understand anything about reading and comprehension?
The author, Mr. McLaughlin, admits that he is an Auburn grad and fan; of course he wanted to make mention of the comments that Mr. Gibbs made. Any fan of any university or college (or community college or high school or whatever) wants to not only see his/her team perform well, but hopes that—especially if the team is not usually so successful—there are other fans, in higher positions, etc., who will share in their excitement.
If you read the article and try to comprehend its meaning, you will find that it is simply a fan, airing another fan's comments, hoping that it will encourage other fans of his University to continue to cheer, support and be proud. Do we really need to apply such negative judgment to this? To anyone?
And, to demonstrate even further comprehension of basic facts, many of you might try to pause for just a moment and ask yourselves: "Would the Secret Service really allow this behavior, and if so, would we ever really know about it; furthermore, should we really care?" My answer to all of the previous would be, "Probably not."
America is not in trouble because of who works at the White House—now or previously. It is in decline because we continue to apply our citizen focus on issues that absolutely do not matter, such as this. Also, we continue to deny our fellow citizens of basic rights (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...that last one applies here, I think), demonstrating to the larger global community that we are, in fact, a nation of hypocrisy and we will brandish that at any whim.
Very well-said Alicia!
Okay...you need to lighten up. It's people like you that give us decent liberals a bad name.
Well said, Alicia. My only point of contention would be that it's a little more than one fan airing another fan's comments. This is a standing press secretary promising to roll the White House if his (our) team wins the BCS Championship, so it has news value - even if it's in a quirky, water-cooler way. Thanks for reading!
blah blah blah blah blah **snore** whaa whaaat?
This is a joke. IF he want's to TP something, TP your own house, not the peoples house. Or better yet, take your redneck ass back to Auburn and TP your beloved little intersection.
Excellent point! Mr. Gibbs would not only have the income to do it–he would likely fly back on the tax payers dime–like they do for everything else they waste our money on.
Actually, Alicia, the lack of respect Mr. Gibbs shows to the WH has everything to do with our national image–if our own representatives do not revere our system, why should anyone else??? However, I do agree we focus on the wrong things–all the stupid hype of college football seems to be one of them.
I am a god-fearing, Obama Loving, Christian and Proud to be Liberal Democrat who thinks TP'ing is just good ol' harmless fun....
BUT......Hell is going to freeze over first! GO DUCKS! WIN THE DAY! And thank you Robert GIbbs...you've done a great job for our President and our nation. Sorry Monday/Tuesday is going to suck for you.
This is the White House we are talking about. But just like obama bowing to foreign leaders and showing up on talk shows like the "View" has belittled the dignity of the office of the president, so now we will belittle the dignity of the White House itself. Absolutely No Respect for our country's symbols and traditions. May they be damned for all time.
You must really miss Bush and all the honor and dignity he brought to the office.
Toliet paper would be very useful in this white house. Could be used to wipe up the S@#$ sitting inside. lmao
Yes, and we can replace it with another drug addict slash alcoholic.
"has belittled the dignity of the office of the president"
Yeah...and W brought the office such dignity and respect...especially around the globe.
Thanks for the laugh....I just blew coffee through my nose and all over the table.
How dignified. Trailer trash?
Obviously its an impossibility to accomplish this, but, WAR EAGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No Tiredofdem.....actually quite the opposite. Do you think the only people who can enjoy a joke live in trailer parks?
My my such a lot of wasted talk. Oregon is goint to kick the living daylights out of Auiburn so all we have is a big
non issue here.
Asinine.
i think it's a great idea. It's good to see some humor from someone at his level
That's just how we roll. It's a little southern snow. WAR EAGLE. Pluck the ducks!
WAR EAGLE !
