D.C. post office evacuated after envelope ignites, police say

[Updated at 4:52 p.m. ET] An envelope that ignited at a Washington postal facility was addressed to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, CNN confirms.

The building at 3300 V Street NE has been evacuated.

The envelope that ignited was not opened and did not go off in an employee's hands, a law enforcement source said. The person tossed it into a sorting bin and then smelled smoke. A source on the scene said that all the employees had been accounted for.

A U.S. Department of Homeland Security official said there are "similar characteristics" but no proven connection to incidents Thursday of mailed devices igniting in two Maryland state offices.

[Posted at 3:48 p.m. ET] Metropolitan police are on scene at a northeastern Washington postal facility where at least one envelope has ignited, police spokeswoman Officer Tish Gant said.

The building has been evacuated, she said.

CNN affiliate WJLA-TV reported there were no injuries.

The incident comes a day after packages that police say each contained a small battery and electric match ignited in two Maryland state offices.

Why did a D.C. post office evacuate after an envelope ignited in a Washington state postal facility? I don't get it?

Clearly sarcasm. They shouldn't say "northeastern Washington" and then only mention DC in the headline.

I would say they assumed the worst case scenario that there were more envelopes that could ignite.

yeah, some of us live in the Pacific Northwest and when we hear Washington, it only means one thing. Especially when it's not followed by D.C. They shouldn't assume all of their readers are from the East coast!

JRF..... I happen to live in the Pacific Northwest, and I NEVER had an fear that they meant Washington State.... not when the HEADLINE stated it was in D.C.

@walter..the verb was "evacuated". If you'll say "evacuate" it would give another meaning of the entire statement.

I'm not sure if it was just a typho or just a clear evidence of a first grader IQ you've got.

Why is it hard to find news reporting on this on the main news sites??

It took me quite a few mins to find it here and this is a blog not the CNN report. I did various searches and did not come up with anything.. I found one link but had to pinpoint my search to the specific news site as opposed to just a general search on the topic..

It always seems the past 2 years they try to quelch... or not report as heavily on DOMESTIC terrorism... subtle manipulation... oh well too late..as its spreading.. these last few years..

How are igniting envelopes harmless? I'd like to see how harmless you think they are when you're holding a flaming envelope.

Is John Boehner done crying yet? Tell him to take care of it. It's obviously an anti-government teabagger nutjob doing this. What did you think would happen after telling everyone that gov't is destroying America. It's your mess, you fix it.

And what does it matter if Obama's back or not. The GOP House isn't going to pass anything, it's not like he has a bill to sign.
And are you saying the Executive Branch should be granted police powers? Really?

I wish people would realize that Washington is a state. If they aren't referring to the state, the DC part ought to be added on.

Washington is also a city, a common last name, an ex-President, etc. Apparently people thought you were smart enough to deduce the clues from the DC headline. You sure proved them wrong!

    • Really

Really? So if the headline read "WA post office evacuated after envelope ignites", you would be confused if the first line of the story read ".... police are on scene at a northeastern Seattle postal facility...." ???
      Washinton is also a city.

This is just a distraction to avert the attention of the American people from something else that is going on of a completely different variety. THE NEW WORLD ORDER knows that we are so easily distracted by apparent terrorism that we will not watch anything else until they invent a resolution part of the falsification.

Also it will most likely cause a spike in the sale of big SUV's. Stupid conservative mothers will have to have a big vehicle to protect little Johnny from terrorists on his way to school.
