D.C. post office evacuated after envelope ignites, police say

[Updated at 4:52 p.m. ET] An envelope that ignited at a Washington postal facility was addressed to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, CNN confirms.

The building at 3300 V Street NE has been evacuated.

The envelope that ignited was not opened and did not go off in an employee's hands, a law enforcement source said. The person tossed it into a sorting bin and then smelled smoke. A source on the scene said that all the employees had been accounted for.

A U.S. Department of Homeland Security official said there are "similar characteristics" but no proven connection to incidents Thursday of mailed devices igniting in two Maryland state offices.

[Posted at 3:48 p.m. ET] Metropolitan police are on scene at a northeastern Washington postal facility where at least one envelope has ignited, police spokeswoman Officer Tish Gant said.

The building has been evacuated, she said.

CNN affiliate WJLA-TV reported there were no injuries.

The incident comes a day after packages that police say each contained a small battery and electric match ignited in two Maryland state offices.

I immediately assumed Washington state....because there was no reference of D.C......poor journalism when you are referring to such an important difference. The nation's capital...or a STATE on the other end of the country. Anyway....now to my comment on the story: What an idiot to think you were going to get away with a small battery and a match. The most damage you are going to do is cause a nuisance. Amateur....

  5. Kill yourself..please and thank you!

It amazes me how so many people have an opinion about the president as though it is going to change the fact that he is in office. No president is perfect and never will be. So if him being a human being and liking sports (like most americans), playing basketball (like most americans) and taking vacations (like every americans does because we all need a mental break) is a problem for you then move to another country. At the end of the day Obama, Bush, Clinton, Reagan, the first bush, none of them were perfect. Obama picked up spill over from other presidents. So maybe all you Obama criticizers should stop complaining and be thankful you have a place to call home. Or you could just move to a third world country and see how much you enjoy that you stupid idiots. That is all!!

The headline said D.C. The caption under the picture said Washington, D.C. Poor reporting by CNN. They should have said Washington D.C. (not Washington state. That way the poor people of the Pacific Northwest wouldn't panic.
