Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs bill limiting funeral protests

[Updated at 9:15 p.m. ET] Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed emergency legislation Tuesday night setting limitations on protests at funerals. The bill is aimed at the Westboro Baptist Church, which plans to picket the funerals of those who died in Saturday's shootings.

[Posted at 5:50 p.m. ET] The Arizona Legislature unanimously has passed a bill meant to stop church from protesting at funerals of Tucson shooting victims.

The vote was 29-0 in the state Senate and 58-0 in the state House. A spokesman for Gov. Jan Brewer earlier told CNN that she was prepared to sign the bill.

Democratic campaign committees use cross hairs and bulls eyes in their ads as well. Bob Beckle was on Hannity yesterday and said he was one of the ones who started using them back in the 70's. Shortly after his admission Bob and Sean began arguing which camp had more hateful rhetoric against Bush and Obama. Nice people we have guiding this country.

i feel the same way about the soldiers. it is wrong to protest a funeral of a soldier with anything political. that man died defending your rights whether u believe we should be there or not. the wbc will meet their maker in the end.

I live in topeka where these people are from and I think that wbc has went to far with protesting at an 8 year old funeral. How sad is this and wondering why they think they have the right to go this far. I think all of these people of wbc are mentally ill to some extent. I see these people all overr topeka when driving around and think how sad it is to have small childern holding up signs stating god hate america, if that is so what are they stilll doing here. Judgement day will come for all these wbc people

Why are the WBC even protesting at these funerals for?
Their agenda is that "God hates gays"; what place does that rhetoric have at a 9-year olds' funeral?

Even their website is full of hate: godhatesf*gs.com. They are a hate-group and should be treated as such. The fact that all their protests involve hate slogans is telling.

I wonder if one of their members die. If the other members show up at the funeral with the same protest signs? And if not, why not? Aren't they supposed to be showing the world their message.

Repulsive people with a repulsive message hiding behind the 1st amendment and a false church status. Judgmental hatemongers! Can't we protest the protesters? Although not at funerals, of course...we would have some class...that they obviously lack!

Well, this was a positive step forward. Now if only Gov Brewer would sign legislation barring former hairdressers (or whatever she was....) from running for anything other than dogcatcher, we'd be all set.

But seriously...the reason she's been so easily manipulated on signature issues by industry is that she's just not intellectually up to the task of understanding complex issues...or really, even basic economics in some cases. How people like Brewer and Palin get elected to Governor, even in small rural states like Alaska and Arizona, is beyond me. It's a national embarrassment. James Madison was right about the common people just not having the brainpower to even know what they're voting for....

The WBC needs to take a page from the Jonestown cult....PLEASE DRINK THE KOOL AID! Then when you meet God he can send you to hell for all the sins you have commited. "Judge not and you will not be judged"

Where was this kind of response over the last 10 years when this "so called" church protested soldiers funerals ? I served 20 years, and I am proud veteran, but this just makes me sick ..... They have been protesting soldiers funerals for years, and yet one congresswoman gets shot and there is instant "action"... MAybe it's just me, but come on "govermante" lets protect ALL funerals from these people !!!

I think there are thousands of Americans wanting to know why these people haven't been shut down sooner, William. I think it's pathetic it took the death of a child to stir up these legislators, but at least someone is AT LAST trying. Much too late, but it's a start.

I agree with HI-IQ...these people feed off of the attention they draw from the media and public. If we treat them as invisible and remove their platform what do they have left. No violence, these sickos are dying for a reason to sue and cry foul on your dime. They are truly disgusting.
