Giffords off ventilator, hospital says

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been taken off a ventilator and is breathing on her own through a tracheotomy tube, the University Medical Center of Tucson, Arizona announced Saturday.

Surgeons on Saturday also inserted a feeding tube so the congresswoman could get nutrients.

In addition, one other person injured last Saturday's Arizona shooting - James Tucker, 58 - was released from the medical center on Saturday, leaving three people still at the hospital.

Now if we could just get her out of the news! Time to move on CNN. Didn't the Virgin Mary appear in a tortilla somewhere, now THAT'S news. No one cares anymore, and some of us never did.

And they keep talking about speaking kindly and making a difference...too bad I don't see that on this website. I doubt any of you are in the hospital with the Congresswoman so do you really have a clue on her condition...other than what the media reports? I am a nurse and I do not have a clue what is happening there...I just pray she recovers enough to live a good life with her family.

To Zach: Speaking as someone who is on a ventilator, yes a trach is better. It likely means she can be transitioned soon to breathing through her mouth or nose. She is inhaling and exhaling on her own, deeply enough to support her lungs and exchange air efficiently. People on ventilators cannot do that effectively, if at all. The fact that she is doing the physical work with her diaphragm muscles of inhaling and exhaling, plus her brain is TELLING her to inhale and exhale is a very big deal indeed. It also gives much hope that she can be taken off the trach soon and breathe totally on her own. Eating for her would still be incredibly exhausting. Her body needs time to recover. The feeding tube means her body is now in a position to process the nutrients, which is a lot better than the IV Nutrition she was on before. She IS making significant progress and that should be celebrated.

Hey "Zach" – Is there a particular point you are making or just the ramblings of a lunatic?

Actually a trach is pretty standard practice for a traumatic head injury. The fact that she is breathing without the vent support is the positive thing here. A trach can eventually be reversed – sometimes within weeks if her recovery continues. And the feeding tube is a great sign – it means her Gi tract is functioning again – A very good sign after a trauma. it is also temporary until she can eat on her own (but with a head injury it could take a while). All very good signs!
