Mother who put kids in wrong school released from jail early

An Ohio woman who was jailed for tampering with records to get her children into a better school district has been released from jail a day early, according to a local newspaper.

Kelley Williams-Bolar left the Summit County Jail on Wednesday, having served nine days of her 10-day sentence, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

Williams-Bolar, a single mother living in subsidized housing in Akron, used her father's address to register her two daughters in the high-achieving suburban Copley-Fairlawn school district.

Copley-Fairlawn said the improper registration cost it $30,000 in lost tuition and $6,000 in investigative costs.

The case has drawn national media attention and outrage, much of it due to its racial undertones: Williams-Bolar is black, while the Copley-Fairlawn schools are predominantly white.

A Google search for Williams-Bolar's name turns up 131,000 results.

Williams-Bolar told CNN affiliate WEWS-TV in Cleveland that she plans to appeal her conviction. The local chapter of the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network is trying to raise money to fund the appeal, the Beacon Journal reported.

I think this is a shame that Black people can't get the same education as the whites. To all of you that think this is okay White people worst then this every darn day and you have the right to judge someone else?

It is truly unfortunate that individuals do not research and gain all the facts before making comments. Copley is a very diverse school district that achieves very well. This mother was caught cheating the system. She wanted a better education, but what an example she set for her children. Prosecutors decide whether to prosecute and it was her own peers (mixed jury) that found her guilty, not the school district. Read the transcripts before making your comments. This is not a racial case, but a woman who refused to follow the rules. There are many schools surroudning the Akron area that have open enrollemnt. She could have chosen one of those schools. Also, she works in the Akron school district. She speaks highly of her employers.

She worked as a teaching assistant and was going to school. Sounds like she was trying to get off of government assistance to me.

This mom did not have to falsify records. She could have legally enrolled her children in this school system by paying tuition. She CHOSE to commit a felony. Now she's upset because she's been caught and will suffer the consequences. She has taught her children that they are above the law because they don't want to follow the rules. I have no sympathy at all.

just sayin', people need to calm down, i understand a political debate but this is pointing fingers, point is she broke the law, and although i really don't think the school suffered monetary reprocussions of ANY sort, there should still be reprimands but jail time is extremely excessive. Yes it may have had something to do with black connotations and stereo types, but we can't prove they wouldn't have done the same to a white woman of poor economic standings, i think it's money discrimination more than race. Not assuming she was poor for any reason other than that she apparently had no other means of getting her children to a better school, than fraud.

I don't get sending her to jail at all. This happens around here (IL) all the time. And not for better educations, for sports teams. We've had guys play at D1 schools that weren't even supossed to be in the high school they were in. Their parents lied (said they lived with a cousin or something) to get them into schools with better athletics.
    This isn't anything new.

The reason people cared this time is because she sneaked her kids into a much richer school district, where only kids with enough foresight to be born to wealthier parents are supposed to be allowed to attend.

Todd A – Before you pass judgement, you should locate the WHOLE story. One article should not condem someone. There's always, his side, her side and the truth somewhere in the middle. However, the real tragedy here is that her daughters are (more than likely) going to go back to an underachieving school. That will impact their lives for very long time and that is what isn't fair.In this country just becuase one is poor, that shouldn't relegate them to a second class education. Oh wait, it still does.

First, mechatronics, YOU'RE AN A$$!! Do you live next door to her and watch her? Bigot. You make me and pretty much the human race embarrassed so just leave the planet. Doll. And yes, and as we all know, towns, cities, and countries all spend their money the way they're supposed to. Y'know, put it where it belongs? Alott some of it back into the school systems say? Which is why the school systems are so rife with all the programs they're supposed to have?

Unfortunately this sort of thing happens all the time all over the country. I agree that it's wrong, but at the same time, I can't blame her for wanting to move her kids from an under-performing school district to a better one.

Are we supposed to abide by the rules and laws or are we not? Do we let someone slide because they are poor and black? Or because they are rich and white? She is just a cheat. She is teaching her children to be cheaters too. Wasn't there something about school vouchers on the table at one point that would allow everybody to send their children to the school of their choice?

The district I once lived in was overrun by crack dealers, and no, I was not on subsistence. I worked 40 hours a week but had low pay jobs. I couldn't afford a better neighborhood. I was tired of my kid getting jumped in the halls and having his glasses smashed and shook down for money, so yes, I borrowed my friends address and sent him to a different school. Any parent would try to find better options for their kids if they can find the options.

No it was not right although I have to say TONS of people do this. BUT my question is...how many people who are commenting here and who want to put this woman in jail, yet are in favor of granting rights to illegal immigrants?
