Six more possible Grim Sleeper cases being investigated

Los Angeles detectives assigned to the Grim Sleeper serial killer case say they are investigating  two additional homicides that may be the work of suspect Lonnie Franklin Jr., according to an aide for an L.A. councilman in whose district some of the killings took place.

The detectives also said there are four missing persons cases that may be related to the overall investigation, the aide told CNN.com Thursday.

In July, 57-year-old Lonnie David Franklin Jr. was arrested and charged with 10 murders and one attempted murder related to slayings that date to 1985. He has pleaded not guilty. In 2009, CNN.com published a special cold case interactive on the decades-long hunt for the killer. Police were led to Franklin after his 28-year-old son was arrested and gave a DNA swab, authorities said. When authorities announced the arrest, they revealed that Franklin had, for a time, worked as a garage attendant at a Los Angeles police station.

Who is Franklin?

Detectives delivered the news about the additional cases at a community meeting Wednesday night at Bethel AME Church in South Los Angeles. They were responding to a question from a family member of one of the two homicide victims, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Dennis Gleason, a spokesman for Eighth District Councilman Bernard Parks, told CNN that the possible additional homicide victims were identified through photographs related to the Grim Sleeper case that police released to the public in December.

Shortly after Franklin's arrest, police searched his home and said they found Polaroids and videotape of many women. In December, investigators released some of those photographs (viewable here), which generated leads, they said.

Franklin is in custody awaiting trial.

Actually most serial killers aren't white. What do you think Gang Bangers are. A serial killer is someone who kills more than two people. There are tons of "serial" killers out there who aren't white. However, the more screwed up ones that caused fear and did horrible insane stuff are white.

In some of those photos of the women released to the public I could see sheer panic and terror on some of their faces. I dreaded there would be more victims. Law enforcement should re-release the photos since some of the women have been identified and are accounted for-someone out there survived one of this sick murderers attacks and in time will come forward. Believe me, there will be some sort of justice, DNA does not lie.If for some reason the system fails there will be vigilante justice, there are just too many victims...

Hasn't it ever occurred to you all that while it may be true that a lot of the high-profile serial killers who were caught in the past may have been white males, the profile oftentimes preceded the captures, and the profile itself was likely tainted by racism? Profiles developed by law enforcement types of criminals who are able to outwit them over a long period of time have to include the fact that, in order to elude capture, the serial killer has to be at least as smart or smarter than the cops. Since cops and profilers are, and certainly were, at least as susceptible to racism as anyone else, don't you think a lot of historically white males are going to think only another white male could outwit them?

There's also a tendency to make the most out of violent killers who use knives and guns, rather than stealthy killers like poisoners. There have been a LOT of female poisoners who probably don't make the classic lists of serial killers, even though they are. And Wikipedia says the likely most prolific serial killer in America was Carl "Coral" Watts, who was black. Best disguise a killer could have is a bunch of cops and profilers who think because you're a minority you're not smart enough to be a serial killer. See how racism hurts everybody?

Seriously? Wow. No offense but you are incredibly wrong about a great many things here, and should perhaps take the time to read up on the subject if you'd like to know why, not to mention a statistics course. It would take far too long here...at least you sorta sideways acknowledge that this is largely your own speculation.

Matt, please feel free to leave your credentials here, along with the serial killer statistics courses YOU'VE taken (and passed) otherwise you're just spouting your own regurgitated understanding of pop criminology. You might also want to consider that statistics can only take into consideration serial killers who got caught. Statistics can't calculate the number of serial killers who got away with it, either because since they didn't fit the "profile" and thus weren't even considered as suspects, or the ones whose crimes weren't discovered...like poisoners... Not every serial killer is Ted Bundy.

TheTruth07- Finally? You ever har of the Beltway Sniper. I'm pretty sure they were black.
Dk- Serial Killers are such due to their precise methodology, not the number of victims. One can technically be serial killer of one though its never recognized without another to compare it to.
As for the rest of you. The first comment of the killer being black wasn't derogatory. Statistics aren't absolutes. If so, then you'd never hear of whites being on welfare, rapping or going to prison (all of which the statistics show that blacks dominate those areas, yet are not defined by it).

    Joe in Colorado,
Were you on the jury last month that acquitted my brother after he murdered my mother?? They even found him Not Guilty of what he CONFESSED to doing. When you have evidence that someone committed a murder, they probably DID!!

If this guy is the guilty person I hope they rid society of him. The problem is there have been countless convictions and people spending 30 years in prison then cleared by DNA. I don't want to see another innocent person put away for life or sentensed to die that is not guilty. How would any of you like to tried and convicted of a crime you didn't commit and locked away for 30 yeas?

So which is it, CNN? Perhaps you should hire a few additional proofreaders.

The problem is eye scans, dna and finger prints are not 100% correct, they use to use finger prints a a remote possibility that someone else would not likely be in the same area at the same time, with all the trillions of humans that has lived on the earth past and present there has never been a finger print likeness taken world wide, scanners and equipment can focus or scan wrong, dna tests are as accurate as your blood inr tests which bounces up and down and all around, to many innocents spend most of thier lives in prison , to many innocents are put to death , to convict a innocent by a law enforcement is as easy as for a criminal to kill some one.

Paul- Let me guess. You get all your information about forensics from CSI and Family Guy don't you? Fingerprints are uniquely formed by the movements of the fetus while still in the womb, NOT by genetics. The likelihood of having anyone having a fingerprint exactly like yours is astronomical (notice I didn't say impossible) about a 1 in 64 billion chance. As there are currently less than 7 billion currently living, it's unlikely you'll even live in the same area as your fingerprint twin. And as far as law enforcement "convicting" a person, it's never happened, EVER in the history or the US. There has certainly been some evidence planting and/or tampering, but an actual conviction? Please. Stop ranting, take your anxiety meds and read up.

I DO AGREE WITH KATE ON ONE THING, AND THAT IS A CRIME IS A CRIME NO MATTER WHAT RACE OR GENDER A PERSON IS.THESE COMMENTS ON RACE DOESN'T MATTER. THEY WHERE ALL HUMAN BEINGS WITH MOTHERS AND FATHERS, CHILDREN AND FRIENDS WHO LOVED AND CARED ABOUT THEM. FOR ALL OF YOU WHO ONLY CAN THINK OF RACE IN SUCH A HORRIBLE TRAGESTY, I HOPE AND PRAY TO GOD THAT YOU WON'T EVER HAVE TO DEAL WITH SOMETHING LIKE THIS. AND IF YOU DO, GOD FORBID.. I HOPE THAT YOUR FIRST THOUGHT WON'T BE ONE OF RACE.

That should be what you are discussing not what race he is or what race he should be. as long as he gets locked away who cares about all that other crap you guys are saying! Have a nice day 🙂
