Behind the unrest in Yemen
Thousands of Yemenis attend a protest Thursday calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign after being in power since 1978.

Behind the unrest in Yemen

The people of Yemen have joined the protests in the Middle East and Africa against long-running regimes.

The unrest in Yemen the poorest country in the Arab world would not be as significant on its own. Within the context of uprisings in nearby countries such as Egypt and Tunisia, however, it takes on a new meaning, said Asef Bayat, professor of sociology and Middle Easter Studies at the University of Illinois.

"The demonstrations in Egypt and Tunisia has caused a 'demonstration effect,'" says Bayat.

Half of Yemen’s population is illiterate, so if the young and educated spread their message against President Ali-Abdullah Saleh’s 32-year reign to tribal leaders, a groundswell of tribes may join in.

It strongly strikes me that in a lot of your programs covering the situation in Egypt the only alternative and name brought up by many of your hosts and programs is "muslim brotherhood"! Does anyone here knows the dark and bloody history of this group? Does anyone read or watch what they've done to Egypt and Egyptians over the years? Please these people listen and study every word CNN says; Egypt will turn into another Iran should the muslim brotherhood take over – a SUNNI one though! God forbid. This is not the change people want, this is not the change poeple are dying for, this is another radical islamist group that would be governing Egypt. These are people who follow word for word the Koran and Wahabi doctrines. Please do not even suggest it. Egypt is full of highly respected thinkers and leaders that could do a better job.

I did not know about the MBA until recently. Yes, I advise everyone to do some research on the Muslim Brotherhood. Not a nice group. Muslims will not be happy until all the world is Muslim. But, then, they will still not be happy because they fight and kill each other. Sunnis say the Shiites are not Muslim enough. Shiites don't like the Sunnis. As long as Islam is around, there will be no peace. The Quaran says to kill all infidels. If you are not Muslim, this means YOU.

@Carmen...I recall the Muslim brotherhoods activities in Saudi Arabia years ago, but need to refresh my memory before posting. So thank you for bringing this up. And anyone who has read even parts of the Koran, like myself, would understand how dangerous it's teachings are. The Koran makes it sound like Allah will not be satisfied until all who oppose him are dead. But isn't that like the God of the bible too? Not really. The bible speaks of God's son heading an heavenly army that will do the killing of God's enemies in the near future, while the Koran encourages Muslims to do the killing now.

      uhuh, let's see

Bring my enemies, who didn't want me to be their king. Kill them in front of me.'" luke 19:27
Matthew 10:34 Do not think that I came to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but the sword.
1Samuel cha 15 V 3 “Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.'
Deut cha 13 V 15 “ Put the inhibitants to the slaughter without giving any quarter and burn their town down

A praise for dashing little children against rocks as a form of revenge: Psalms : 136:8 O daughter of Babylon, miserable: blessed shall he be who shall repay thee thy payment which thou hast paid us.
136:9 Blessed be he that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock.

Roman 3:8 let us do evil, that there may come good.

this just few verses from bible. there are thousands radical order of killing against the non believers that would be too much to even mention it.

Yemen's Ali Abdulla Saleh arrival to rule back in 1978 was after a long conspiracy of how to overcome, a that time, the land return occupied by the Saudis that started in 1906 clandestine with the British, 1934 fake war with the Imam who in return secretly sold it to the Saudis with an annual fees he collect from them. So when President I brahim Alhamdi took power in 1974, the first thing he made was asking the Saudis to return back the Yemeni land that is equal to twice to what is known Yemen now, Crown prince Sultan used to come to Sana'a almost twice a month with the boundaries files begging Alhamdi not to raise such an issue, of course Alhamdi used to refuse saying that this is the Yemeni's land not his and cannot bargain for such an issue, so the Saudis started to look for another way of getting rid of Alhamdi and bringing another who will be ready to do what they wanted in exchange for the presidency chair, of course thet found their wish they found the alcoholic, womanizer, illiterate Ali Abdullah Saleh, who happened to be only a police Sergent in Taiz.he killed alhamdi via the scape goat Alghashmi, ripped off his people and gave the Saudis all what they wanted.and so they Yemeni people winded up being the poorest instead of being the richest in the region.

You forgot to mention Yemen's civil war back in the mid 1980s with both sides being armed by the same war exporting government. Even a child's mind can figure out who supplied the weapons

@louuzz...true. Back in the day there were these people who were abused by everyone both by individuals and governments. God felt sorry for them, and chose them out of all the world's peoples to be his special possession. And He defended them jealously. One time, He empowered a mere little boy to take out his toy slingshot and slay a huge and highly trained military man, Goliath. God gave them strength, and yes, they slew their enemies. Man, woman, and child. That was before these same people turned their backs on this loving God and even had a hand in killing His son. You mentioned him NOT bringing peace but a sword, and this is true. It's not "peace on earth, goodwill towords man"....it's "peace on earth towords men of goodwill" His sword is coming out of it's sheath, again. Just as back in the day. Pity the men who have no good will, and their families who approve.

As far as Yemen goes, just inniolate the F–KS and be rid of these trouble making leeches.. Then do the same to Iran and Pakistan and aphganistan... BOOM!!! problem solved AND TERRORISM OVER.. Then clean up this country of all that mean this country harm, what gets me is that we have Muslim and Islamic groups her that hate all Americans.. If these azz-holes don't like us, why are they here besides waiting for orders to attack this country, and our government knows this to be FACT!!! *Wayne*

Are you trying to be funny or do you honestly have that much hate in you? The Yemenis do have grievances against their government as you would too if you were hungry enough! Enough right-wing bla-bla-bla!

@RUFFNUTT...a seed is a potential marijuanna plant, just as a fetus is a potential human. It used to be illegal to abort potential humans. Odd how it's illegal for a weed seed, but now legal for a human seed. Wouldn't you agree? (or are you a troll)
